Learn Descript with an AI Tutor

Ross Zeiger uses Google's Gemini AI to learn Descript from scratch. He walks through creating a video project, generating AI speech, cutting specific frequencies to reduce echo and sibilance, and exporting the final video.

Lowered gain at 50 Hz by -10 dB and at 200 Hz by -9 dB
Reduced gain at 5471 Hz by -13 dB
Remember that scene in Iron man where Jarvis can see everything that Tony Stark is working on and guides him through building his suit? That science fiction is now reality. Today, I'm showing you Google's AI Studio, and I'm going to show you how you can use this to learn descript. The first thing you're going to need to do is come to aistudio.google.com sign in with your Google account, and you'll come to the home page of this app. Up here in the top left corner, there's a button that says stream real time. Click on that and you have a couple choices here. You can talk to Gemini. This is just a voice conversation back and forth. Show Gemini you can turn on your webcam and ask it things in your environment in your room, and it can help you out with that. Or for our purposes, share your screen. Click on that and this window pops up. It asks, what. What do you want to share? You can share a specific tab, you can share an entire window, or you could share your entire screen. I'm just going to show descript because that's all I want it to see. I'm going to hit share and it's live. It immediately starts the conversation I hear and it's live.
Is there anything else I can help with?
And it's already responding, so. Hey, Gemini, thank you for being here today. On my screen right now is the video editing software called descript. Can you please walk me through creating a new project?
Sure. I see you're on the Descript Mastery workspace page. To create a new project, you would click the new project button in the top right corner of the screen. It's a blue button. After clicking that, it will likely prompt you to start with a blank project or one of the templates. Is that helpful?
So I clicked on the new project button. Now what?
I see that you clicked the new project button. Did you want to start a video project, audio project, or record with others?
I want to make a video.
Okay, I understand that you want to make a video. So you would click on the video project option from the dropdown menu. Do you see that option?
Yep, done. I clicked it. So now what do I do?
Okay, I see you have a new blank video project open. Now you can either add a file, record a new video, or use AI speech. Which of these options would you like to try?
Let's make an AI speech.
Okay, you'd like to use AI speech. I see the AI speech option. If you click on that, it will likely open a new window or Panel where you can choose from different AI voices and write what you'd like it to say. Would you like to proceed with that?
Could you generate me some text to put into here?
Sure, I can do that. How about this? This is a test of the AI speech feature. Let me know if you can hear this. Would you like me to try generating something different?
Yes, generate something longer. Just make a random topic and make it about 30 seconds worth of speaking.
Okay. How about this for a 30 second AI speech on a random topic? Have you ever stopped to consider the intricate dance of a hummingbird's wings? It's a marvel of nature. Is this something you would like to use?
Yes, I put it in. Now what do I do?
I see the text in the script box. Now you can click the Done writing button. Then you can select your AI speaker. Once you've done that, the AI should generate the audio. Does this help?
Yes, it's done loading the AI speaker now. Could you walk me through how to EQ the volume on this?
Okay, I see you have the timeline view open. You can adjust the volume by clicking on the audio segment, then dragging the volume slider up or down. Do you see the audio segment and volume slider?
Not the volume. Can you teach me how to EQ this?
Okay. I understand that you want to adjust the eq. I see on the right side panel where it says audio, there is an audio effects section with a plus sign. If. If you click that plus sign, you will find a list of different effects, including eq. Once you select it, there will be several options for adjusting it to your liking. Is that helpful?
Yes. Now that the EQ settings are open, what do I do? How do I use this?
Okay, now you have the EQ settings open. You can adjust the EQ by clicking and dragging the colored dots, each representing a different frequency band, up or down. This will change the gain at that frequency. You can see the numerical values for the frequency gain and width directly below the graphic. Is there anything specific you would like to adjust?
If I have sort of a reverb in my room, there's kind of a little bit of an echo. How do I fix that? Using the eq I see.
To reduce the echo, you could try reducing the gain in the lower frequencies, particularly between 100 and 400 Hertz, as that range is often associated with room reverberation. Try slightly reducing the gain in that range and see if it makes a difference. Do you want to try that?
Okay, I just did that. Does that look correct?
Yes. I see that you lowered the gain in the 50 Hz and 200 Hz ranges by -10 and -9 decibels, respectively. This should help with reducing the low end frequencies that are contributing to that echo. Is the audio sounding better now?
There's also a bit of an S, like a little whistling sound that the speaker makes. How can I fix that?
I hear that there's a whistling sound that's often caused by sibilance, which are the harsh S and sheesh sounds. To fix that, you can try reducing the gain around 5kHz to 8kHz. Would you like to try adjusting the gain in that range?
How's that look?
Okay, I see that you reduced the gain at 5471Hz by -13db. Does the audio sound better now with the adjustments you've made?
Let me see.
It's a marvel of nature.
A blur of motion.
I see the playhead is at 0 minutes, 3 seconds and 5 milliseconds. Is there anything else I can assist you with?
Could you show me how to turn this into a video?
I understand you'd like to know how to turn this into a video. You already have an audio track and the text script to add video. You can click on the black video window on the right side of the page to upload a video or use the stock tab to find video. After adding a video, you'd then position it on the timeline to match with your audio track. And finally, you can click on the publish button on the top right corner to export it. Is that helpful?
Yes. Thank you very much for your help today.
You're very welcome. Is there anything else I can assist you with today?
That'll be it. Thanks. So there you go. Pretty interesting. Not perfect. It doesn't know Descript specifically, but it can. Based on what it does know, it can look at the context of the page, it can see what's on my page, and it can infer what I need to do next. And the quality of the output, as with a lot of AI, is the quality of your input. So when I was first testing this, I wasn't very specific in my questions. Like, I didn't say, this is a video editing software. Show me how to do X. I was just more like, show me to make a new project. And that confused it. So I left in some of those stumbles so that you can see how to overcome them and be specific with it to get you to where you need to go. But I just love showing you stuff like this. And I think it'd be really useful, especially with something like EQ that is pretty hard to to wrap your head around. If you're tired of editing videos taking forever, you're going to want to click right here for my next tutorial. In it, I'll teach you the descript techniques that took my editing times down from 8 hours per video to under an hour.
