Making Descript Layouts Live - Submit your request using the link below

A walkthrough of building custom video layouts in Descript, including intros, lower thirds, animated text overlays, and subscribe prompts. The presenter shows how to set fonts, colors, and animations to make them work for your videos.
A number of submissions today for layouts to make live here on this live stream. So with that I'll just jump right into the first submission. I'm just going to go in order. I'm not going to be able to get to all of these, but I'll do the best I can with the half hour or so that I'm here. So the first one, this is from Jason C. He said title intro for a podcast about tech and the he's. He gave me some requirements here. Futuristic swoosh, minimalistic microphone with digital waveforms. Okay, so title intro. The way that I'm going to show all of these today is by starting with Descripts Layouts. This is my favorite way to make them because if you come to scene, you go to choose layout and you have a huge library of stuff that they've already built. You have this black and white one, you have this white and black one and then you have these ones that they call like Berlin Carrot. There's like a city name with a color. Helsinki Blueberry. And then you got dark and light mode for each one. Luxembourg, Lisbon, Shanghai, etc. So my favorite way to make these is to start with one of their templates and then modify it. And Jason didn't send me his logo, but let's see here. Sound effect. Okay, so I'm just going to pick one of these and do the best I can off of the description. And Jason, if you're watching, feel free to chime in and provide more details. But let's start with. I'll just pick any of these I like Helsinki Blueberry. This is one I've used a number of times. I'll go to the light mode and let's. We're going to look for intros. Well, first of all, I can click Use Layout Pack and the, the UI is a little tricky here because by chick, by clicking Choose Layout Pack, it now puts me into the Helsinki Blueberry Light. And then each of these are like categories inside of that pack and so you have them broken down by camera, screen, media, multicam, etc. So let's pick one of these intro ones since that's what we're building for you, Jason. And let's do minimalistic with digital waveform. So let me pick again. It's hard going off this minimal. Like I don't know if you're going to be on the camera or if you're just. You just want the words and, and you're not showing. I'm going to assume that you're going to be talking with while this is playing. So I'm going to pick this one right here. And with all of these, these are. This little preview here is. Would be your video. Your video would be there on the right side, and then the title text would be there on the left side. So if I select that. And again, this is just the starting point. We're going to change this to be more custom for your particular podcast. So right off the bat, now that I've applied it, if. If I open my timeline, I can see that this is a six seconds. That's just the default because I added this to a blank project. It's 6.1 seconds long. So the first thing you told me is that your font is bold Montserrat Bold. And I already have Montserrat in my library here, so I'll just click Montserrat Black. Black, of course, is the boldest. Make it just a little bit smaller, because that's a really thick font. And there it is. And I won't even worry about changing this text because everything in the layout is a placeholder. So when you apply this to your project, your podcast, it's going to get replaced, or you can replace it rather with the specific text for your particular show. Okay, so all you gave me was Montserrat Bold. I don't know if you have a secondary font, but I'm just going to do Montserrat down here as well. Montserrat Bold again. And it's already a bit smaller, so that works. And they're different colors, which is good prioritization of the text there. And then your logo again, you didn't send it to me, but I'll just pick something here. Let me do microphone. Let's say. Let's try. I'll just put in something random here. You know what, I'll actually go into Dolly and generate one. Let's do that. Generate an image of a microphone. That would be a good logo. And if you haven't used this before, you can generate images right here in Description. Pretty cool. And then use them in your project, obviously. And so take Underlord is thinking. Let's take just a moment here. Oh, and let me turn on my screen cursor so you can see my mouse just a little bit better. And there it is. Okay, cool. These. These look like good logos. Let's do this one right here. And I'll just make it a little bit smaller. Oh, and you did give me your hex colors. But I. With Dolly here, I'm not gonna be able to tweak that to, to your colors right now. But basically you could, you could take your logo, let's pretend this is your logo obviously and we could move this anywhere in our screen here. Let's make this a bit smaller maybe and a bit wider. And of course, you know, all of this would depend on like what is your studio setup like? Would this work for your particular camera setup? And is your, is your logo a square like this or is it rectangular? But based off the limited information I have, we're gonna go with this and let's do, let's round the corners. So I went into layer with my image selected and then just rounded the corners so it looks a little bit nicer, kind of matches up with the image there. So. Oh, and by the way, I'll save these and share them so you can, you can take advantage of these later. Anyone watching this and to save it, you just come up to save scene as new layout. Click on that. You're going to give a name for the layout itself. So we'll call this podcast Intro. And then we're going to add it to a layout pack. We're going to create a new layout pack and we'll call this YouTube live stream layouts, something like that. And I'm going to share publicly because I want you all to be able to have access to these when I'm done. And so yeah, share publicly. Alternatively, you could share or just do private, which means only you can see it. If you have editors in your drive, they will not be able to access it. Share with drive is your medium category where editors in your drive can access it but the public cannot. And then public means there's a link, anyone can check it out. Hit Create Scene type. This is going to be an intro. And these are, as I showed you a moment ago, those, those categories inside of. Inside of the layout pack. This is what those are. Check it out. And so I'm just choosing Intro. I'm gonna hit add and it says adding layout to layout pack. And once that's done, this layout is officially saved. Alright. And I didn't even really finish this. Sorry, I'm kind of all over the place. So you also gave me your hex code. So what I could do is copy your hex code and then just paste it in there. It's kind of a lighter blue than what we had. And there it is. Now that bar across the bottom is your brand colors and I can do the same thing with the font color. And then again, if I had your actual logo and if you were generating this for real, then you could, you could of course, tweak that to be your brand's color. Ignore the blue here because that's just the placeholder. Once you actually apply this to your project, that's going to get replaced with your video. Okay, so now that we have that saved, what we need to do, since I've updated it, is come to drive. We're going to find this one. So I've saved it as YouTube live stream. There it is. I'll say save layouts or see layouts rather. And there's the specific layout that I've been building, but it doesn't have my latest updates. It doesn't have the colors that I just changed. So if I click on these three dots, I can say replace with current scene. And that's like saving out, saving over the previous one. So I'll say replace with current scene and it's telling me replace it. So there's the original one with the one that I'm going to save over with your colors. Hit replace replacing layout and layout pack and it's done. And that's another one of those things where the UI is a little bit tricky. It's like, it's not obvious where to find that necessarily, but with. With muscle memory, it all. It all makes sense. Okay, so that's number one. I'll just call this Jason's intro and then let's go on to the next submission on the list. And again, sorry, I'm going fast. I only got like half an hour here. We're just going to get through as many of these as we can and hopefully you'll just learn kind of how to. How to think about these. Okay, lower third for a cooking show. This one is for Sarah and your font is play fair display. You gave me your hex code, the logo and sound effect. Oh, we didn't add sound effects to the previous intro. That's okay, we'll move on. We'll do it in this one. So lower third for a cooking show. I'm assuming this will be like the intro title. So let me just add. Go into the stocks here. Stock footage. Let's go to cooking. Let's find a video. Here we go. I'm gonna put that in as a placeholder. And so there we go. We got some cookie cooking video as our placeholder. And then I'm gonna come into scene once again. This is where you always find the scenes or the layouts, rather. Click on this dropdown and we can stay in this Helsinki blueberry. Again, these are just Our starting points. I'm going to tweak it all so that it looks like your particular brand. And then if we scroll down through here, some of these categories can be a little confusing. Like, for example, the quote. You could. You could get away with using some of these as your lower third in a way. But the ones you're actually looking for is one that's called Title, I believe. I don't even see it. Big fact clip. Let's look in the other. The generic Descript one. Yeah. Okay, here we go. Chapter title. So Chapter title would probably be a good starting point for this particular one. So I'm going to click on that. It's applying the layout. And now we have a problem. It took away our video, but our video is still there. Don't worry. If we come to scene over here on the right and we open that up under layers. Oh, it did get rid of it. What the heck? It deleted my video. Okay, hang on, I'm gonna add that again. So sometimes what happens with that black layout is, is it just hides the layer. But in that case, it actually took the layer away. Oh, and I know why. It was because this wasn't in the script. If I click on it, include in script. Now it's a script layer. So before it was a layer on top of my script, and that's why that layer or that layout deleted that layer. So if that's the case, if you had your script in here, this is what would have happened. It would make it black, it would hide it, and then you find that script layer, and then click on this little eyeball right here. It's going to, like I said, hide it, but when you click it, that unhides it so you can see it again. Okay, so now we have that all set, but there's a new problem. Our script layer is on top of the title layer. So we need to send this to the back. You right click on it. Layer order, send it back. And now there's our lower thirds. And let's see here. Let me look at what your font was. Okay, Playfair was your font. So we can go into the font Playfair. There we go. Let's make. I don't know how bold you use it, but let's make it a little bolder to be able to see it better. And it's gonna depend on the background, how visible this is. So what I might do is add a background to this. Like, we could do something like this. To explain what I'm doing with that title layer selected you come to layer under background, you hit this plus button, and that puts a background behind the text. And then no matter what is going on in the background, if it's showing some steam from the cooking or it's showing some vegetables, no matter what colors you got going on, that background will make it so that text can pop a bit more. So let's add that. And then you click on this black dot to be able to change the color. So what were your brand colors? Tomato red, you said. Okay, let's do something like that. And you could change the opacity here. You could dial the opacity down a bit so it's not quite so in your face. And we can round the corners a bit with that part right there. And there we go. It's starting to come together. And you could call this, you know, insert cooking show here, insert name of your cooking show there. And then with this white line here, that's actually a rectangle. This, if you look on the timeline, everything that's in your video has a layer here on the timeline, including that little line, which is actually a rectangle. And even though it's super thin. So we can click on that rectangle layer and we can change the color. And there, under this is this palette that my mouse is on right now is recently used colors. So that one right there is the one that I just used for your background. And now we got that nice little. That little line right before the titles. So there we go. And the again, all of all the information, like the animation that applied to this title layer is coming off of the layout that I originally applied from descript. If I want to change it, I can select that layer and then under layer, come down to animation. And I could change it to one of these. For example, scale I could change. If I click on these, the effect settings right here, I could change how fast that happens. I could change the easing and all these different settings like that. I'll probably go back to appear or reveal. Reveals probably. There we go. Where it just slides up. Okay, so thank you for your submission. Let's go to the next one. Animated text for a travel vlog. This is from Emily. Okay. And animated text for a travel vlog. Text overlay. I assume you're talking about captions. So what that would look like is let's add a some travel video. Let's do a plane here. It's gonna be our placeholder while we find the right look and feel for this particular layout. And I'm gonna come to scene, choose layout and let's do a captions one. We're looking for captions. So here under the Captions category. Click 9 more. And we got a bunch of choices here. So again, the way to read these little previews are this is going to be your video. Like when there's that silhouette of the guy, that's going to be a preview of your video. And then any text is going to come on top of that. In this case, some of these, like that one would be. That's a placeholder element. So that white box you can replace with your video. And then your text would go below on a black background. And then this one is no video, it's just the animated text or the captions. And this one would be right side. Right side half would be your face or fill in the blank with the video and then left side would be your captions. And also pay attention to these ones are portrait mode. So these ones are landscape. These are going to be your standard YouTube. But if I were to apply one of these, it would turn my video into that aspect ratio into portrait mode. Or these bottom two are square one by one ratio. So pay attention to that. That will in fact change your whole project if you, you apply one of those. Okay, so let's do. You said text overlay. So I'm going to pick this one and this is. Well, I'll apply it anyways and I'll explain my, my thinking as we go here. So. Oh, hold on, let me undo that real quick. Same problem I did before. Let me move this. I'm going to move this into my script layer, including script. And now this is going to work a little bit better. So let me do that again. Go to captions. And then I'm choosing this overlay one. So now because that video was in my script layer, it didn't get rid of. Just replaced that silhouette of the guy from the preview with the actual video, the actual travel video. That is my script layer. And here's how it looks. Oh, and I don't have any text in there to. To make a caption. So nothing's happening. My captions layer is in fact added as is a gradient layer. But to actually see text, we have to have something in the transcript. So I'm going to go into write mode. I'm going to say this. Oops, this is my. Hang on, it's not going to let me write over this video. It'd be better if I had a, a video with actual transcription or actual words transcribed. Well, I'm not going to spend a Bunch of time just overlaying this with text. But the idea is assuming you had a video that was actually transcribed here, then that captions layer would read off of the the transcript and display that on the screen. And then to modify the captions layer so you can just click on it just like we saw with the text layers before, you can click on that captions layer. And here's your settings to change the font, change the weight, the size, the color, all that good stuff. And you said your font is Pacifico. Let's see if that's in there. It's not. Which raises another teaching point. If you click on the font and your brand's font isn't in here, if you click on this thing right here, you can search through Google's font library and find a lot of modern fonts in there. But if you, if it's not in Google's font library and you own your font, you or you have the, the file for it. They're dot dot, TTF files, I think they are. I can't remember the form otf, whatever they are, then you can upload that right here. So you can drag that file over here or you can browse through your computer and find your custom font. But Google's font library is awesome. So what was your font again? Pacifico. Pacifico. So there it is. It's in Google's font library. Oh, it's like this cursive looking thing. And so once you find your font or a font you like, you can hit get font and you can download it. And then once you download that file, you can upload it here. Or actually the, there's a better with with the Google font specifically, you can just type it in this box. This is actually the easier way. So there's Pacifico. I don't even have to do all that. That downloading I just showed you, just click on that and hit add to drive and it's adding Pacifico font Pacifico to my drive. And now again, apologize that you can't actually see it. But if I had my transcript there, you'd be able to see the how this looks. But that's where the captions would display. And you could modify the colors and everything to your liking. Okay, let's call this travel overlay. Oops. And again, to save it for those just joining you, right click on the scene thumbnail that you just made. Save scene as new layout. Select the pack. So I started a pack called YouTube Live Stream Layouts. Here it is. Select and then give this a title. I'LL call this travel text overlay. And just a note, like a general note on capture or on layouts is for anything you find yourself doing over and over in description, you should have layouts for that. Any elements that are like the same across project, it's going to save you a ton of time. It's going to make everything consistent. And if you spend a lot of time making the layout so it looks really, really good, then you can have that professionalism and that consistency across all your projects. And so anyways, hopefully you'll have a lot of layouts and you'll want to be specific so you know which one this is like travel text, lower third overlay. Or if you're making videos in different aspect ratios, you'll want to put that in the title. So be specific so that you can find these, these layouts when you go to apply them. And then so again it's getting added to my YouTube live stream layout pack that I just created at the beginning of this call and then scene type. This one we can call Captions. It's a captions layer. So there they are. And add and that's now getting saved. Okay, so that's three down. Let's go on to the next one. YouTube channel subscribe prompt. Yeah, this is a Common1 and YouTube I'll call this end screen. So once again, just for the sake of speed and simplicity and this is actually how I do it, is using the descript ones as my starting point. So for this one we're going to come into the outro section, click on six more and you got a number of different options here. Now from a YouTube strategy perspective, I don't actually think this is a best practice, especially this first one. Like you don't want to give overwhelm people with a bunch of different options. Don't forget to like subscribe, follow comment, you know, like don't. Don't give people too many things to do. Give them one clear call to action. And the best call to action in my opinion is watch this video next. So I think probably something like this like thanks for watching. And then in YouTube studio you would put on that, that click here next video. And the best way to do that is to incorporate that into, into your script. So when you're make, when you're filming the video you just say none of this matters if you don't watch this video next. And then that'll get people to click on to the next videos. My once I started doing that, once I discovered that unlock my videos are getting 25% click through rates on the end screen. So it's really powerful. And you'll see like these spikes in views when someone is binging your your videos. So anyways, I don't recommend something like this with too many call to actions. Pick something like this. Actually like this, this is a better starting point because it's just got the one video. So you click on that and ignore this placeholder. Again, I'm assuming this is going for YouTube but ignore that placeholder because that would be for adding an image or embedding another video, which you wouldn't want to do the way you would actually do this. And this confuses a lot of people. The clickable element is added in YouTube, not in descript. So you have to go into your YouTube studio, go to the video details, click end screen and then add the next video that you want the viewer to see. And again, hopefully you built this into your script where you say everything you just watched doesn't matter if you don't watch this video next. And so that's what you would then put up there in YouTube studio. Okay, enough about that. The way that let's go into how to make this more yours. So Bay Boss New is your text or your font. That's a good one. So if I once again I select this one and I recommend like the callous font looks nice, but my concern with that is that everyone's gonna use that because all the descript standard fonts have that. So I definitely would have something more your brand. Customize it. Customize all these so that it's more you. And what is. Okay, Bay Boss, Bay Bass. There it is. And there it is. And baybass is a very tall and narrow font so we could probably make this a bit bigger. Bay Boss Baby is really good for thumbnails and stuff like that for that reason. And yeah, just a note like that is great. And then again I'm all about streamlining things. Like I'd probably take off these, these websites and call to action your logo. Probably okay to put in there. And then I would definitely change the background. So you said your background is just pure red or your brand colors rather. So let's do that. And that's kind of intense. I don't know if I would do that. I would add, I would add some texture to that because it's a little bit intense. So what we could do is go into stock and what I really like to do is. And what's your. You didn't say what your brand. You didn't say what your brand does, but I not knowing what your. Your company does or your channel, I'm gonna say tech, whatever, let's do that. And under backgrounds, if I click show, all these are like animated backgrounds. And these are pretty cool to add to things like title pages or outros. And so like I'll just click on this one and that's gonna add it to my project. And there we go. Now the problem is it's covering up all that red. We actually want that red to show. So what I can do is with that background still selected, come to layer and dial down the opacity. And let's do like 20%. And it's barely visible, but you can see there's. It adds some texture and it just looks a lot better than that harsh. Pure red white text or was there. Did you have a secondary color? I don't see a secondary color, but let's assume you're using the white text with the pure red. Highly recommend you just add some texture like that. And then as before, I won't go through it all again, but you right click save scene as new layout and then that will be what you can use. Okay, let's do one more. I'm already a little bit over time, but we can do this and feel free. If anyone has any questions or anything, you can drop that in the chat, but otherwise I'll just wrap up with the submission from Jessica Outro for motivational. So I'm actually going to skip this one because it's just another outro. Let's do. I'm trying to see one that's like a style I haven't done yet. Okay, news banner. Let's try that. News banner. News banner. Okay, so if I come to scene, choose a layout, and how would I even go start this one? Maybe it's not really a banner, but. Okay, they're asking for a news banner. So where I'm kind of thinking with this is something like a breaking news, like someone's live streaming while there's a breaking news story, something just happened politically, economically, and someone is reacting to something else. What you could do is something like this. And once again, that white square is a placeholder element that you can replace with another video or an image. And then on the right side, you could have your face there. So let's go ahead and drop that in and show the timeline placeholder media that you'll see. And there we go. So that could be your image sitting at your webcam, however you record. And then this could be the image of the news you're reacting to. Or it could be an image you create. Whatever that. It doesn't matter. The way you do that is you click add media add from computer. You could browse your computer, find a video or a file you already have and add it like that. You could record into there. Probably Wouldn't make sense with something you're reacting to. Or you could add stock media or something from your project files. So in this case, as I've been building this live today, here's all the different things that have been added. There's the different. There's the cooking B roll, I added the travel B roll. So all that stuff is. All the files are building up here in the project files. So you could add your. Whatever you're reacting to here and then click on that to replace that placeholder with the meet the. The news story that you're reacting to. And then I guess what you specifically asked for was a breaking news banner. So let me add that over this. The way I would do that is something like under elements, a shape. So a banner. I would probably do a filled in rectangle. Let's drop that in and let me just make this a little smaller. Let's give this a background color. Breaking news is usually flashy and red like kind of, kind of like the outro we just built with the red background and white text in it. So I could do that. And as I, as I made that I just realized I could do it just a text layer and give it a background. But I'll continue with this since I started. So. And let's. Did you give me a font? No, you didn't. So let's just stick with Bay Boss. I'll just click in here breaking news, something like that and then make it bigger. Oops. Actually I don't need to make the box bigger. I need to make the text bigger there and then there you go. And now what you could do is animate it. You could have it where the, the rectangle pops on in a certain way and the text pops on in a certain way and you need to select each of those elements individually to do that. So you come to layer with it selected animation. In Reveal for example, this is placeholder and it pops in like that. It also has, if you go to seam, it has a smart transition applied. So it's going to do some fade in and it's going to do a little bit of automated animation. Anyways. This is placeholder media that you'll see if you add a layout to an image. So there we go. I'll just call that News banner. And then I would save it. And I would now be able to use that in any project. Okay, this was a marathon, or not a marathon, but a sprint through five layouts. But hopefully you learned a lot. And if you want to submit to the next one, then you can fill out the same form below and I'll get your your request. And I'll probably do this every once in a while if you enjoyed it. I got a a lot of submissions, so hopefully I can get to more.
