Saturday Q&A

Descript founder walks through YouTube launch packages, editing services, and courses for creators. Offerings include weekly coaching calls with channel analysis, one-on-one Descript tutoring, and a Mastery course at $179 with templates starting at $25 each.
So yeah, please drop your questions in the chat. We can go in any direction you want to take this. The last five or six live streams, we've talked about templates. So that's a popular topic. I was thinking, in absence of any questions, I will talk about YouTube streaming to YouTube as well as just general YouTube advice for those wanting to get started on the platform. I have a YouTube offer which I want to talk about, so I'm gonna pull that up. So if you go to descriptmastery.com, this of course is my website and one of my products is the YouTube launch package. What this is package is a. It's meant for someone who's brand new to YouTube and you can a series of calls. So for every week for a month, we'll get on a call, we'll look at your channel, we'll analyze your data, we'll talk about content gaps. So places that you, your audience based on your particular niche. And I've done this for all sorts of niches. So whether you are a author or a doctor or any sort of other specialty, I've worked with a lot of people. At this point, I can help you with your YouTube channel. And basically what we do is we come up with strategies for your YouTube channel. I give you ideas, I show you how to come up with titles, thumbnails, and then obviously help you with the descript side of things as well, like helping you edit professionally. And then, yeah, so it's a month long. It's a launch package. The idea is you've never created a YouTube channel before and we'll get you to knowing what you're doing inside of the platform and creating and this is YouTube or sorry, dscriptmastery.com YouTube. So I'm gonna drop that in the chat and there it is. And yeah, just to talk a little bit more about and I'm just killing time here. For those of you just joining on the different channels, feel free to drop questions in the chat and we can go into those. But basically what it is is I do four coaching calls with you. So every week we get on a call and like I said, we analyze your Data on your YouTube channel. We talk about content gaps that things that you. That would serve your audience. And the way to do that is to look at what's already working in your niche. So you don't need to reinvent the wheel with YouTube, you find the titles that are working and you tailor it to your niche. You find the thumbnails, you come up with a template for Your thumbnail that you can use over and over and it's all data driven. So I have AB tests that we can run on your thumbnails. So we'll test multiple thumbnails per video and find out what colors are resonating, what facial expressions are resonating, what titles, all that kind of stuff and then yeah, it's just a use my years on this platform to grow your YouTube channel. Aside from that, I also just do editing so you can hire me to edit for you. I do editing by the hour or for longer term stuff we can do by the project and that's just descriptmaster.com edit templates. This is where you can sign up for the Templates masterclass which is my entire course on how to make, apply, troubleshoot, edit, et cetera. Templates you can do order custom templates. So for $25 a pop I can make a YouTube intro, YouTube outro transitions, anything you want for your channel as well as there's some free downloadable templates. So you can come down here and each of these are folders with a bunch of templates that you can Download to your YouTube, your your t Descript drive. And one thing to know about these is you do have to be on the creator or pro plan in order to use templates. So be aware of that. A lot of people reach out to me like why isn't this working? And it's because you're on the free plan now. My most popular offer is Descript tutoring. This is what I do. Spend most of my days is in calls with people one on one and they hire me to teach them descript from the scrap, from scratch. They find me, they're just like I don't want to learn all this myself and I can help you shortcut the learning curve. I can help you if you I have quick sessions. If you just have like a quick technical question like something's not working how you expect or some sort of glitch is happening. Quick Recorder is not working. Whatever it is, save yourself the hours of trying to figure that out yourself or the the weeks of waiting for descripts customer support to respond to you. And you can book a session with me and we can knock it out really quick. Or if you are brand new to the software and you just want to get some steady coaching over the course of a couple weeks you can book a bigger session and I'm actually doing a deal right now. If you buy one of the five call packages then I'll give you a six call for free. So it's basically six, six calls for 500 bucks. And then my other service, the Last one, the fifth one, is the course. And this is the descript mastery course. And it's $179 right now. And it's. You can think of this as four parts. There's the core skills, where there's a hundred video lessons, over 100 video lessons, where I go into each feature, major feature of descript, like how to use the AI stuff, how to use the editing tools, how to use a timeline, how to understand layers. And then so that's the core skills section. That's, that's the bulk of it. And then there's a workflow section where I go through an actual workflow. These are like 30 to 60 minutes long and they're this part here. And so it's something like I say squad cast here. So it shows you how to set up a squadcast call, all the way from scheduling it to best practices with your guests, how to communicate best practices with them, as well as a free downloadable squadcast checklist so that you can give your guests so they know like you want to be on the right devices. You don't want your guests to be on mobile devices that sometimes cause issues. You don't want them to be on any browser except for Chrome based browsers because those sometimes cause issues and things like that. Those are all on the checklist. And get that as part of this workflow section, screen recording. If you're doing screen recordings like my entire course is, then I talk about how to do those and all that kind of stuff in these workflows. Then there's the templates masterclass, I talked about that briefly. That is how to create templates, how to edit them, how to apply them. And that entire course is included as part of the master Masterclass here. And then the fourth section of the course is the version updates. And every time descript releases a new version, which is about every other Tuesday, I publish an update video showing you what's new in the software, just showing if any buttons have changed, if there's any new features, and then how that affects your workflow going forward. And then every time that something does change, I go back and I update the core portion of the course. So yeah, that's all taken care of. And then on top of that, I also have a blog. So I write articles two or three a week, and they're just walkthroughs to different things. In descript, this YouTube channel that you're on right now, some of you watching on here? Some of you are on other channels. Recommended tools. I have things like the microphone that I use, computer that I recommend for editing, the mouse, I use things like that. And then Git Descript itself, if you haven't downloaded it already, you can do that there. The live events like this one I'm doing right now, you can find those here. There's a little about section and there is a contact link if you need to reach out to me as well on every page of the website. Oh, and you can't see it. Let me change the size here. There we go. This blue chat bubble in the bottom right, you can click that on any page of the website. And if you drop a message in there, that goes straight to my phone, it comes in as like a chat message. So if you ever have questions, you need assistance, that is the fastest way to reach me. Okay, so with that, let me check the chats, see if I got any questions. I do not. So let's start editing. Let's start creating some templates because that's what people like to see. So let's create some titles. Call this title template one. And I'm gonna get a background in here. A really simple formula for a interesting background is to just take a B roll like that. It doesn't matter, just anything. And then you have some background image. And if you have your own B roll, even better. I always prefer my. My own B roll. It's just more personal than stock stuff. And then add a title over it. So just go to the T at the top, hit title and then get it to look how you want. Over here in the text section. You can change the font, you can change the color. I like, I like the look of the yellow. This is the one on my website. Back to descriptmastery.com templates here. If you go to the free templates, where are they? This one, B roll title screen. These are that simple formula. They have a different background, different type of background with yellow titles over it. And actually let me just work on those. I'm going to go to templates and title B roll landscape. I'm just going to make a bunch of these while I'm killing time for people to join this call. So yeah, they have one like flying, boating, sports field stars. So different, different types of backgrounds that you have. Just gonna do like forest. I want like walking through a forest like that. And then let's give it a title forest. Just give it a moment to load. There it is. And I'm going to put a Title on it. And actually I'm going to. Just to make these all uniform. I'm going to go back to another one of these. I'm going to copy this one. Oops. I'm going to hit control C to copy it and paste. And there it is. And then I'm just. I'm just going to keep making these and feel free to drop your questions in the chat. Otherwise I'm just going to kill time by making templates as we go. Let me do like a diving one. If I can find me underwater. I don't want a person in it. I want it like. Oh, that's cool. I'll do like fish or something. Oops, let me undo that. I didn't want that in the transcript. Fish. Paste. Nope. Fish. Click over into the canvas. Paste. There we go. And let's do composition. Let's do. What was the one? I have flying. Let's do stars. Do I have stars already? Yeah, I do. Okay, let's do pages. This is a cool effect. So you could have like something like a book like that where it's like the camera's like moving through the book. And then I'm gonna put it the title over that. I'll say book and very good. New composition. What else can I do? Let me just delete it and let's get some ideas. That's a really. Did I already use that one? That's really nice. Nope, I haven't. Okay, so then I'm just gonna say river and paste. There's that title. New composition. And I'm. All of these are going to end up as separate templates. So I go to publish changes. You can see that they're already labeled here and there, but I have to. The ones that I just created aren't labeled here. You have to label them in two spots. You have to label them on the name of the composition itself and you have to name them here for the title. So I'll need to name this one again. Forest Fish. This one was book river and that one's empty. So I'm just gonna hit publish changes and these will update to my website as well. So if you're checking this, the replay, the B roll title scenes here will now have those ones that I just added. And let's create something else. What else could we do? Waterfall, Fog. Let's do, like countries, like Nepal. What if I do some. Cool. Yeah, that's cool. If you've ever been in Nepal. This is a typical scene. Oops. Delete that. I was still in the title so it pasted. Tried to paste my layer into the title there, which I don't want, obviously. Let's do Switzerland, something like that. And then I'll click into the canvas. So I'm making sure that a layer is not selected. And I hit paste. Whoops. Dang. It keeps putting it in my title there. There we go. And then new composition. And let's go to. What else could we do that would look nice? Suit Desert. Desert scene. And let's do that. And I could also play with the colors of these. I could go into effects. I could do color adjustments. I could make these a little brighter, increasing the exposure. Or make it darker by just dialing that. I could change the opacity. I could make it like 80%, 50%. I'll leave it at 100% though. It's already kind of a subdued dark photo. I'll just call it desert. And then I'll click into the gray area. I'm going to paste my title and go to the next one. Let's see. And these are all moving. Obviously. They're all. Oh, that's cool. This will be a cool title. One thing we can do here, this will be kind of fun is you can put the title below the horizon and you could even turn it a little bit. If it's at an incline, you turn it so it's parallel. It's not really a drastic. Drastic in this one. So I'm not going to worry about it. But I'm going to copy that layer. I'm going to apply green screen to it to get rid of the background. Let's see if this will work. I'm not sure if it is going to behave how I expect it to because typically this applies best for like humans. Like. Like me right now. Would work great. If I had a video of what you're seeing. Would get rid of my background. Leave me. But when it's like camels against a sky, it might not recognize that as anything. Yeah. Didn't do a great job. So unhide that. The effect I was going for was to have those animals walking in front of the words. The title words. Let's see how it looks. Yeah, it's not great because it's not usable because the. The legs of this camel right here are getting cut off. So I'm going to delete that and that's fine. I'm going to leave it like that. And I'll call this one Camels. And let's create another one. A new composition. Go back to my media bin and let's do. Let's do like some cactus. Like that and. And cactus. And then I'm going to click into here. Oops, I had my wrong layer pasted that time. So I'm going to come back, grab my title layer. I'm going to take it from here. Desert cactus paste. It's pretty slow, the background. So I'm going to do is click on it and where it says 1x under duration, I'm going to change that to 2x. Now it's moving a lot quicker so you can at least see some motion. And I'm going to leave it like that. And then let's go back to our media bin. Delete. Let's see what we can find. Mostly nature stuff here. Oh, let's do some bamboo. Let's get some bamboo in here like this and hit paste. Get my title layer in there and say bamboo. And of course, when you're using this template, you could change this color. So right now it says it's yellow. And if I click on it, I could change this to red, black, gray, whatever, blue. I just. And keep in mind, these are templates. They're starting points. So once you apply this in your project, you'll click into where it says title and then you'll just change it to your title. Let me create something else. And so. So it's just a starting point. You can change the color, you can change the font, all that type of stuff. It's all fair game. Let's do Singapore. Let's do some cool, like modern cities. Yeah, Singapore at night. This kind of thing is cool. Singapore. And then click in there. That's cool. And you see the traffic and the lights changing. New composition. Let's do Bangkok. Time lapses. These are kind of cool drone shots. I'm trying to avoid people in it as much as possible. Oh, something like. That's cool. With like the canals. Some of them are too. I don't like these city ones because they're so gray. They're so. They just look too dull. But the night ones are nice with a lot of colors and lights. Temples are nice in Bangkok. That'd be cool to put one of those up. Maybe something like this. Bangkok. Oops. Bangkok. And I pasted in my title there and my background layer hasn't even shown up. There it is. Okay. Sometimes it just takes a moment. Let's keep going. What else is cool? Hong Kong I don't love. Mostly the night ones look way cooler. The day ones are too dull and I could play with the colors a bit. To bring out the blue. Yeah, something like that. That's kind of vibrant. Okay. And then I'm going to paste in my title. This one is, of course, Hong Kong. And I'm just going to go ahead and publish these. And then I'm going to move on to another type of template. That one was Nepal. That one was Switzerland. That one was desert, camels, cactus, bamboo. What was that one? Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong. And hit publish changes. And now those are all published. So if you go to my website, if I click on this now, let's see, they're all in here. We got 18 different ones. And you could hit copy to my templates. And this would bring. Bring it into your own descript drive. And they're yours. They're free. So feel free to use these if that's useful to you. They're super simple. Obviously you can make those in five seconds on your own, but you get the idea. And let me just clean up a couple things in my templates here. So that was the title B roll landscape. What else do I have for free here? The YouTube like and subscribe. Let's make a YouTube like and subscribe button. Let's get a little crazy with these. I'm gonna do enable multiple compositions. So as you saw in the previous one, I had each template in its own composition, and it comes out. Each one comes out as a separate composition. And that works. You can also make each template as a separate scene. So these are two templates. If I go to publish changes, there's 1, 2, but they're in the same composition. They're just separated by scenes. So both methods work. It's just really a matter of preference. Okay, so let me create a couple YouTube like and subscribes here. And what I could do is just real simple. I could take click YouTube like and do something like this. Like one of these. I don't know if these have transparent backgrounds, though. Giphy stickers. So something like that could just be its own template. Let's see it. And that's way too big. I'm gonna make it smaller and put it like centered lower third. And then if I hit play, plays the whole thing. And it's transparent. So whatever you apply this to, it would then work. But I'm going to just call this generic GIF YouTube like sub. And then I need to publish changes for this to go live that say, share publicly, make a new composition, and let's call this YouTube subscribe only. And this one I'm gonna make from scratch. I'm Gonna do a shape, and it's gonna be similar to the. The one I just saw, but I'm gonna try to recreate it as like a. More my own interpretation here. So let's do like a. Let's do like a 75 corners rounding. Let's do opacity to, like, 80%. And let's have this animated. So I'm going to click on the layer. I'm going to hit plus animation custom. I'm going to move my second keyframe to like a fraction of a second, like a third of a second after the starting point, and it's going to stay right there. But my first keyframe, I'm going to have it start out of the frame so that it looks like this. It pops into the scene. I'm going to make it just a little bit snappier, a little bit shorter by dragging the two closer together. And then I'm gonna add in my title. So she's gonna say, subscribe and make that a little bigger like that. And then I'm gonna shrink the font size so it fits in that box. I'm gonna go to like, 85. There we go. Just center that up. And then I'm gonna use my arrows up and down to just center it in there. Give that a border. And I'm gonna just. Right now, those words are just. They're gonna be there when the box is popping up. So I want to stagger these so that the box pops up and then the words fade in like that. And then I can add a little bit of sound effects to that so it sounds a little bit more interesting than just silent. And I'm gonna do a whip whoosh. So I could do like, whip whoosh. Like that. And I click on the name to apply it. Oh, geez. I don't know why descript's been doing this lately, but. And I don't know if you could hear that through the streaming Software, but it's volume plus 48, so it's like totally blown out sound. I'm going to bump that down to negative five, and it's probably still going to be loud. I'm going to move it just a hair later so that it's. The whoosh is lined up with the. It's too loud. I don't want it to be distracting, you know, Like, I want it to be evident that the motion is happening, but not so loud that it distracts from whatever I'm talking about. I'm going to go to negative 20, even barely audible. There we go. Okay. And, and that looks. That looks pretty good. Like the subscribe popping in. I could also get a little bit crazier with it. Like YouTube Subscribe Bold font. I'll say publish changes. I'll just call it subscribe bold font, generic gen. Yeah, that's fine. And I'll hit save. And then on the website, if you were to open this, there would now be those additional like and subscribe buttons. Um, let's see, what else could I make? What else would be interesting or original? You can do. You can animate things so that they spin. I could do something with that. I could. Let's see here. I could do something with wave. Not. Not for like and subscribe. I won't worry about that. I'm gonna stop there for that one. And let's go to a different one. Let's go back and let's do outros. I could do some generic YouTube intros and outros. That would be fun. Let's do new template and then let's call this YouTube intros. And I'm just gonna make a bunch of generic YouTube intros. And what you could do with these if you download them is just swap out the titles and then you could use it on your own YouTube channel. But let's just get some interesting, interesting elements here. So let's say I like this, but it's kind of dark. Let's do something more. This is kind of mysterious. It's like moving through a cave and everything's super slow. Streaming and trying to edit. So okay, let's say this is our intro. It's like a camera moving through a cave and waterfall. And I'm going to just add some titles to this. So I could do video. Oh my God. It's really slow video. Wow, this is like, this is terrible. Can't even handle a title. Okay, I know. This is thrilling. Live streaming content. I'm gonna come back to this. It's too slow. Top 10 sound effect. What else could I do? I'm gonna do some multi camera templates. These are super useful and I haven't come back to these in a while. So the best starting point if you're gonna make original two camera interview type of templates is to start with descript's built in ones. So I go to new composition and I go to the templates gallery and then I say multicam and then I pick one of these. So like I could do. There's four camera, three camera. I just want even that, the full screen one. That's obviously very simple. As simple as it gets and honestly is probably a really good approach because then the focus is on the speakers. There's no other distracting backgrounds or anything. There is something to be said branding wise for having your own design, like a look and feel that is in all of your podcasts or interviews. Let's see here. You know what, things are running really slowly. So I'm going to wrap this up here because this isn't a good video. So thank you for those who joined. We didn't get any questions, but maybe next time and let me know what you want to talk about. Send me a message anytime. Talk to you.
