I make and publish a video every day for this channel or for one of my other ones. Now, I'm not claiming my videos are winning any awards, but I'm a big believer in quantity when you're starting out so that you can build the skills that lead to mastery. So while I've been able to put out a lot of videos, there's one person who's always stopping me from hitting record on my camera and ultimately publishing even more videos to YouTube. And it's the person who looks back at me in the mirror. So the top thing I have to do every single day is get out of my own head. And something that's helped me with that was learning and constantly reminding myself of something called the spotlight effect. The spotlight effect is a cognitive bias that we all have where we feel like everyone is focused on on us. We think that we're going to put out a video and everyone is going to watch it and see all the bad edits and faults in our logic and the wrinkles in our face, and they're going to see what an imposter we are, that we have no idea what we're talking about. The reality is, when I was starting out, my first 250 or so videos got less than 50 views on average. And the views that I got, no one was commenting. And a very small percentage even made it through the whole video. And in retrospect, that was a great thing because those videos sucked, and that was my apprenticeship. But the feeling of cringing at my own videos or thinking that everyone is laughing at how much my videos suck hasn't gone away completely. So that's the main thing I've had to do, and I'm still working on, is mastering my own psychology and constantly reminding myself of the spotlight effect. If you have a camera and a YouTube account, you have everything you need to make videos. There's just one person stopping you from hitting record on that camera and publish on YouTube.
