Once a month.
Foreign. Okay, we're live. So welcome on this Thursday morning. Okay, we're. I got my coffee here, so join me for this coffee hour. I wanted to start by showing you my. Some changes to the business and I haven't been posting as much. Normally I post every single day, so if you've been wondering where I've been, I'm pivoting the strategy of the channel to. From up until now I've been all about quantity every single day, posting a video. And of course the weekly live streams that I did until recently on YouTube. Now those are members only, but I'm gonna, I'm doing more longer, like different than just Descript. It's gonna be more about like content creation and I'm spending a lot more time making videos and I'm gonna go to a once a week situation going forward and then this live stream, the public livestream on YouTube I'm gonna do once a month and then on the Descript Mastery School, which I'm gonna show you right now. If you come to descriptmastery.com if you can edit a word doc, then you'll come to this page. And the school includes two group coaching sessions per week. And during those. Hold on, I'm going to take off my jacket here. During those group coaching calls, they're, they're what I used to do for these, the Q&As on this YouTube channel where you can come in, you can ask your questions, we can look at your projects and critique them together, all that kind of stuff. So that's part of the Descript Mastery School. And the cool thing I wanted to show you, the thing I'm trying is I'm doing a 14 day trial for $9. So for $9, pretty, pretty low risk, right? As low as I, I could make it while still having. You have a little bit of buy in, you can come in, try the course. You see, you get full access to the course for those 14 days you can come into the, the live stream calls. So it gives you a chance to see is it worth it. If it's not, cancel. You know, I, I want you to, to enjoy being there. And so this is kind of like a trial version and if you like it, then it's $219 per year. And like I said, twice a week group coaching, we do masterminds every two weeks. So people who are working on YouTube channels and courses and stuff like that, we meet up, we talk about what we're working on and just kind of collaborate in that way as well as you know, I'm on demand support. I'm, I'm always available. You can send me an email, send me a message using the chat bubble in the bottom right, and I'll help you out with whatever you're stuck on. But yeah, I highly encourage you. This is descriptmastery.com course. Let me put that in the chat in case anyone's interested and feel free. For today's session, I'm going to go over some. It's going to be a demo because tonight there is a. There's Tech Week happening in Mexico City right. Right now. And I'm going to be giving a presentation about descript, showing some key features that people can use to edit a lot faster. So that was the idea behind today's live stream, was to. For me to, to practice out a little bit, show off a couple things that I'm planning to show off. But along the way, if you want to ask questions, feel free to do that. So I see we got a few people on the call already. Feel free to drop any questions in the chat and we can go any direction you want. Okay, so that's the D Script Mastery School. Let me know if you have any questions about that. And let's see, there's also a community with it. So there's discussions happening, people talking about, you know, news articles they saw or talking about just interesting tips or just asking questions about the course. Because it's also highly related with the course that I have and that's all bundled in descript Mastery School. I also do tutoring. So if you come to this tutoring tab on descriptmastery.com, and it's taking a second to load here, but show you in a moment. You're here because. Let me pause that. So I have. You can, you can book single sessions, you can book a package of four calls where I come up with a syllabus for you and then I, we, every single time we work on one of the skills that you need to reach your goals, whatever it is you're trying to create, if it's YouTube videos, a course, anything like that, then we'll work on that. And then there's a package above that where it's the same thing, plus a little bit more. Well, a lot more. The 40 hours of done for you editing. So I also do editing by the hour, $50 an hour. And so if that's of interest, then you can, you can book this bigger package. And that's the idea with that is to. I can help you edit your first set of videos while you're learning and then pass the torch for you to be able to, to go off on your own. And the question in the chat, what do I think of Descript versus Cap Cut? So I did a video about this and it's a good question and the basic gist of it is capcut is awesome. I love Cap Cut. It's easy, it's, it's great. But it's, it's best for short stuff because it's owned by the creators of TikTok. So it's really, really good for shorts. It's, it's the gold standard for that shorts and TikToks YouTube or sorry description Shines for spoken word stuff. For podcasts. It started as a podcast only tool, I believe, I believe it was audio only at first and so it's really meant for podcasts and it's got the. Actually this is a good thing to talk about. If you come to a new project. Record with others. I haven't shown this yet on a live stream, but you can do basically a remote interview straight into descript and then it takes the tracks of all your guests as separate video files and then it can automatically split it up into different views so you have like a speaker, a view speaker V view side by side view where the two speakers are on the screen at the same time and it'll automatically do that for you. And so it's just really, really powerful for spoken word. So that's, that's my, my basic heuristic. There is like Cap Cut for shorts, fast paced stuff and integration with TikTok descript for spoken word stuff. Screen. It's really good for screen recording. I do almost all my videos screen recording with Descript of descript. Camtasia is really good as well for screen recordings because it has a few features that descript doesn't in that regard. But yeah, let me know, let me know if you have any other like if what you're trying to create or if you have a specific concern, I can give you more guidance on that and if anyone else has questions, let me know. So what I started to mention was when you hit new project and let me turn on my fancy cursor thing here. So it's a little. Oh, you can't even see this in the live stream, but I have a cursor. Oh, there it is. Okay. There's just a delay. Okay. So if you come to a new project, there's this record with others button and you might not see this on your descript because it's a beta feature that they're rolling out slowly. I think the last Update I saw, 50% of people have this, and so 50% of users don't. And if you come to, you click on it takes a second to load. Here you can see it made a blank project and now it's putting me into another window. And it looks like this. You can choose your webcam, you can choose your microphone, and you can choose your speaker. So pretty basic stuff there. I think we've all seen that with Zoom, or if you've recorded with descript already, then you've seen that, and then it just asks you one question. Are you wearing headphones? Yes or no? I am not. So I'm going to turn that on. And what that does is that'll minimize the echo because there's going to be a lot of echo coming out of the speakers that, you know, you've probably heard that effect before where there's. There's that feedback loop. So that'll just minimize that. If you click no and then you hit join. And now we're inside of a descript room. And the thing that's different or lacking about descript room is there's no schedule feature yet. All you do is there's this link and all you can do is copy it. You can paste that into an email, send it to your guests. You could put it in like a calendar calendly page as the location for an event. So that is an option, but it will not change. It's just that I expect that that this system is gonna change over time. Cause again, this is all super new, but for now, that's the system we have. And then there is a chat room, so you can chat to people, other guests in the room. You can see who's in the room. And I don't know this, but with SquadCast, a limitation was you could only have 10 guests. I don't know if that limitation applies in rooms. I assume it does, but I can't answer that definitively. There's the record button. So as soon as you're ready, you know, you brief your guests, let them know what they need to do, then you'll hit that record button to start, and then you can change your video and mic throughout the interview. And then finally there's a screen share button. So pretty simple, pretty streamlined. And I've only played with it a little bit in a real call, and it worked fine. It was great. No problems. Um, so let me know if you have any questions about that. And then when you're done with the call, you just hit leave and it says you've left. Have a nice day. Okay. In the chat, do you think descript is sufficient enough to edit videos, AKA tutorials when you in front of PC with a bit of fancy editing so it's pleasant for the viewer and switch between your face screen? Yeah, so I think so because I use it exclusively for that. Not exclusively, I use it for everything. But my entire channel is me screen recording descript with descript. So if I go to YouTube, descript, I have hundreds of videos that I've made using descript, all screen recording tutorials. And so just to show you, let's see what would be a good one. This month's videos are actually kind of not. They're kind of slightly off of descript. Let me find a different September. Here's a descript heavy one. Indiana Jones map. So yeah, I'll often use. So this opening video is recorded into descript using my DSLR camera that I have on a tripod right here. So you can do that. And then when you start to show your screen, you can switch over to showing your screen where. Like right here. So this is me showing Google Maps. And then so there I am, little webcam in the bottom left corner and I have a template for this. So once I do the recording, I just apply the template. It automatically takes out my background, applies the green screen effect, and then makes whatever I'm showing on my screen full screen. And it's really fast and easy. And then I also can do things in the template. Well, yeah, that's the gist of it. I'll just. For the sake of simplicity, I'll just tell you that. And. But what happens. So you asked about it being fancy editing. So the, the advantage of this is this is a separate layer. So let me just copy this so I don't like lose anything. Not that I'm gonna need this again, but here, here it is again. Okay, so. So yeah, these are separate layers. So if I wanted to be in the bottom right instead, I could do that. Or, or if I wanted to add back my background, I can, I can make myself big. I can click these little buttons right here to make myself in a circle and then I can do separate stuff here. So like if I wanted to add an animation on that map to highlight something, gonna hit this plus button, custom animation. And let's say I want to zoom in on Germany because it's right in the middle there. I just do this and then watch what happens when I Play it. We need to plan our route and we need a map so you can zoom in on parts of the screen while you're talking to highlight things. And I guess the second part of your. Yeah, you asked about switching between your face and the screen, so yeah, that's super easy to do as well. And if I. Let's say. Right. Or let me find an actual part where I'm talking to the camera. So right there I'm facing the camera. So let's say I want to just make that just me in the frame and not no screen at all. So I just created a scene by hitting slash. So there's now a scene six and a scene five. I'm going to go into scene five, and in this scene, I'm going to bring back my background and then I'm gonna go to position and say fill canvas. And so there I am, full screen. Plan our route, and we need a map. And then it cuts back to the me showing the screen view. So super easy. You saw that? Took me 10 seconds to make that switch. And there's even a faster way to do that if I go to side by side. And here's all my scenes. If I make another scene. So if I make another scene, like, let's make scene seven. Here's what's really cool. There's my scene five where I'm full screen. I can right click copy layout. Come to the next scene where I want to use that exact same layout of me being full screen. I say paste layout, and it pasted that animation as well, but it made me full screen there. And so once you do it once, you can just do copy layout, paste layout throughout the whole video. And it's really fast and easy. All you have to do is make the scenes. So, yeah, no problem. That's awesome. No. Yeah. It's not weird questions at all. Those are perfectly valid questions that I would want to know too, when I'm starting out. Yeah. And I think between those two, you can't go wrong. Those are the two I use Capcut and Descript, because those, like. I feel like Premiere is the gold standard right now, but it's kind of the dinosaur. Like, it's. It's the Microsoft Word of video editing. And then Descript and Capcut are like the. They're just going to get more and more features, more and more powerful, more and more fast. And so I think it's a good either one. You can't go wrong if you put your time into learning these two tools. All right, so, yeah, thank you for the questions. So for my presentation tonight, some of the things I was going to show are, I mean, AI features. That's the big one. Everyone wants to see the AI features. So studio sound. I'll start with the studio sound demo. And I. I'm a little bit unprepared because what I'm going to actually do for this presentation, I decided is rather than try to show these features live because look at how long this is taking to apply. Like this wouldn't make for a very interesting presentation. So what I'm actually going to do throughout the day today is record maybe 10 different things. Me demoing different features and then that's going to be in the presentation and I might upload, depending on how the, the recording for that presentation comes out, I might upload it to this channel. But anyways, you probably don't care about that. One weird thing I experienced was the transcription from Descript when I recorded had a lot of mistakes to correct, like language mistakes. Maybe that's because I wasn't speaking so clearly. Yeah. So results vary like if accents. Unfortunately, if you have like a non American accent that's. I've heard it. The accuracy goes down and yeah, unusual things like speaking, mumbling or if you, if having a good mic is important as well because it's just going to go off of the quality of what it hears, what the AI can pick up. So getting a better mic could help, but also just, yeah, bringing awareness to the clarity of enunciating your words and speaking at a reasonable pace, you know, not too fast, that could cause words to sound connected. So all those things help. But the other thing that I often tell people that relieves a lot of anxiety is do you need your transcript, like for this video? There's no captions on this video and I'm not publishing this as a blog. So for me the, the accuracy of this transcript isn't important as long as I'm able to like make sense of it and make my edits. Like, it's like, okay, I don't need that sentence, let me delete it. But outside of that, I don't need it to be completely perfect. Now if you are, if you're going to publish it as a blog or use captions, then accuracy is important. And yes, you'll want to fix everything up. If you're reading a script, then there's something cool you can do. If you go into your project files, this is where all the files that make up your project live. Then for example, here's my recording it's called IndianAJones sequences MP4. Actually. No, sorry, that's not it. It's gonna be under recordings. Okay. Yeah, yeah. It could be the accent. That's very possible. And if you have a script, though, so if you find the file that got transcribed and you click these three dots, first of all, there's a retranscribe button, and that's not likely to give you a drastically different result. But sometimes there's errors. There's, like, parts that it missed completely. And if you retranscribe it, that'll just run the process again and fix it. But the next thing, if you have a fully written script, is this thing right here, which is grayed out for me right now because it says it's only for English transcripts, but this is English. Weird. But if you hit replace transcript, then you can just paste in your entire script and it'll override the automatic one with your handwritten one. So that's a really good file or feature to consider. Outside of that, I could show you a couple tricks for quickly editing. So here's a perfect example. This sentence has a period right there. It says maybe nine or ten years old. Period is Indiana Jones. It should be. Should not be a period there. If I hold letter X on my keyboard, you can see my cursor has a little circle with a period and a comma after it. With that, I'm still holding X. If I click on any word, it'll cycle through punctuation. So notice when I click, it adds a period, click again, turns it into a comma, click again, it creates a space, and it uncapitalizes the next letter. If I click again, adds that period and capitalizes the next letter. So that's a really fast way to fix punctuation, if that's the problem it's having. And then the other really cool trick is Z, letter Z. And now you can see I have like a big A and a small A. And if I click on a word, it capitalizes it so O O, big O, little O, like that. And then the third one, and this is for you. If. If it's totally messing up words. If you hold letter C, as in cat. Oops, it already pulled it up because I had something selected. I hold C and now I have a little pencil icon. And if I click on a word like, let me see here, let me change the word years. So I click on years while holding C, and this correct box pops up. And I could change that to months if I wanted. And then I Hit correct and it changes it on the transcript. And when I do that, it only changes it on the transcript on the video. It's still gonna sound like I'm saying months because it hasn't messed with the audio. But yeah. So again, that was the Z, X and C key. Those are the things that like everyone needs to know about because it's so fast. Makes polishing up your transcript so fast and easy. Let me think about any other transcription tips that I could give you. I think those are the big ones. Like just good microphone, not have background noise that'll distract the system that's analyzing your voice. And then just knowing those three quick tips to polish up your transcript as needed. Cool. Thanks for the question. And in this video, by the way, I don't know if you've seen it, but this Indiana Jones map that I make, my destination in the video was Warsaw. So shout out to Poland. That's cool. Let's see here. So back to Underlord, the other thing I'm going to show tonight. Oh, and let me demo studio sound because I didn't finish that train of thought. So this, this video isn't going to be dramatic because I already have a good microphone and sometimes I get better results with. Awesome. Glad you saw it. And it's funny, I'm actually a quarter Polish because my grand. My grandfather's from there, but I'm from Seattle area in the U.S. so Washington state. So yeah. So I have a. Have a family connect. I don't know anyone in Poland that any of my family but have roots there somehow. But okay, sorry, keep getting distracted. Studio sound. And I'm gonna end up in Warsaw, Poland for this trip. So there it is with studio sound off. And I'm just gonna play it and toggle it on and off while it's playing. So I just used Google Maps and I had to play around with a little bit to get this flat view. But then I'm just gonna take a screenshot. So I'm just. It's barely noticeable at all because this is. Like I said, this is already a good mic. But it's. If you have a bad. The worse your audio, the better the mic will do or the better studio sound will do. So if you have like a loud air conditioner traffic cars honking does great at removing that. Although let me. Let me caveat that I've had a bad experience with studio sound the last few weeks. I don't know why, but. Well, I actually do kind of know why Descript said that they're the the engine they use for processing studio sound, they change it out periodically, ideally hoping to improve it. But they. The. The latest one they're using seems to be really bad. The last few weeks, it just sounds very robotic, very flat. And so I've been using other tools. So let me show you a couple of those. I made a video about one of these Adobe tools a couple weeks ago. This one right here, I made a video about mic check. Oh, and this, this would be good for you too, Jake, to check your microphone. Because I don't know if you saw this video, but it'll tell you like how from the computer's perspective, it's like, okay, you have a lot of echo or you're too far from your microphone, stuff like that. And so this is a really good tool to check and that may help with the transcription issues. But this thing right here, enhanced speech, if you go to click on that come into here, then what you can do is just drop files in here, audio files only. So let me see. I think I actually did this. What was this one? Yeah. Okay, so this is a perfect example. This was a. I was making a video yesterday and studio sound really sucked on it. It was messing. It was making the audio worse. And so what I did is exported the audio to my computer and then I drop it into this tool, it uploads it. And this tool is free, by the way. You just need an Adobe account. And then you come in here, and when it's finished, it says enhancing the speech can take anywhere from a few minutes up to a lot longer, depending on how big the file is. Yeah, as it says, up to 10 minutes. But anyways, basically this is studio sound with just a different version, just in sometimes better version. So here you might enjoy video editing, but even something you enjoy doing sometimes can be really, really frustrating at other times. Video. So that was it, on and off, but you can just toggle it on. And this is on the free account. I had a client who had the paid account. Oh, actually it says it right here is a little ad. So if you have the paid account, you. There's more you can do other than just on and off. There's this enhanced speech and then the strength. So basically like studio sound, where you can turn the intensity from 0 to 100%. You can do that with this tool. And okay, so to finish out how I would use this, it's audio only, so I'd have to download this and then you put it back into your Descript project as a new layer. And then you have to mute out the original audio. So it's a little bit involved, a little bit complicated. And you also have to make sure that you don't make any edits, any cuts to the original video. Otherwise your audio is going to be out of sync unless you make the proportionate cut on both layers. But anyways, yeah, keep that in your mind as a tool if studio sounds causing you issues, which it has been for a lot of people lately. So that's studio sound and the shortcomings of studio sound. Remove filler words. Oh, I have a lot in this video. So my best practices is always worth stating. Because people, they use studio, they trust blindly, trust, remove all filler words. And they just like remove a thousand filler words or something and then find their video super, super choppy. So I don't recommend that. I recommend that you click on this thing that says all filler words, unselect all, and then just select ums and uhs. Or if you have like a known verbal tic, like I say like a lot, then I might select that's my top one on this video. I said it six times. Then I might select that because I know that those are gonna be not proper likes, but so's are probably okay. Like this one right here. So I just use Google Map like that. That's a proper use of so and so. Yeah, that's. That's just how I would I think about it. Mostly though, ums and uhs are gonna go repeated words. I don't click. Cause those are useful to keep in. And it could be an entire repeated phrase. And then it gets super choppy if, if your guest is moving around or you're moving around a lot. And then beyond that, if you click on this, there is either delete, which will remove it from your video and your transcript, or what I recommend, ignore. Ignore will remove it from your video, but leave it on your transcript with a strikethrough. And that's super important because it allows you to keep maintain context or maintain awareness that something was deleted there. So with these ums and uhs, let me ignore it and I'll just. To finish this out, I could remove these one at a time. So I could click click on it. I could play it in context to see if that's a good filler word to remove. And if it is, I can just remove that one instance and then it's not list, it's not started. Or I can hit remove all and they're all gone. But let me find where those are. 737 737. There it is. Okay. That orange one right there, that's what I ignored. So that's what ignore looks like. It's gone from my video. It's no longer in my timeline, but it's still here with that strikethrough. So I can maintain awareness. And where did it go? It scrolled me down the page again. There it is. So I can maintain awareness that I got rid of it in case. That's a really bad cut. Not. It's not started. It's. And that's okay. If. If it was like my face and I was like, over here, and then in the next after that, I was like over there, that would be a jump cut, a very bad, abrupt cut. And what I could do to fix that is just hover over it and hit this button, restore. And now it's back. And now my videos can be smooth again. It's not, albeit with a filler word. So. So that's ignore versus delete. And then if you absolutely know, like, okay, don't need that cut, totally gone. You hit that delete button. It's gone from the transcript. Out of sight, out of mind, back to underlord. There's also this remove, remove retakes section that's super useful if you record how I do, which is I just start my recording and I'll read. Typically read a script and I'll just. I won't stop the camera if I make. If I mess up a line, I'll simply restate it and then I'll just remove it in editing. So remove retakes will help you identify that. Personally, I don't typically use it because it might not always get it right. It's only going off of the. The Transcript. It's using ChatGPT to read through your transcript and then find repeated retakes and then pick the best one. The one that either makes the most sense or however the computer looks at it, it doesn't have the context of your tone of voice or your pacing or anything like that. So that's why I don't trust the AI to do it. I just do it myself. And because it's not always my last take, that was the best. Sometimes it's my middle one, where my. I emphasize the word in the way that I wanted to or had the right pronunciation or something. And so I'll just do it myself. But that's what that does. Okay. In the chat right now, I face this issue that I edited my video for three days, didn't know what I was doing recorded 15 times, still haven't published as I'm not satisfied. So I don't want to ask how do you approach your recordings? Do you do script or just talk to prepare somehow? How does this process work? Yeah, so it depends what you're making. Like basically do I use a script or not? It depends what I'm making. Like this one. I don't think I used a script actually. I probably wrote down some notes ahead of time and then kind of just, just ad libbed roughly off of that for this, these two or three sentences. But I do recommend a script especially starting out because yeah you, until you get like really comfortable on camera, it's, it's a skill that you build and you get better at, at saying what you want to say. And so I think it's really valuable to. If you can have a budget for it. A teleprompter is awesome. I have one that I'm just starting to use and get better with. I've only had it a couple months, but there, so there's apps where you can have like I have a remote right here for the teleprompter and then you can just either hit play and it'll automatically scroll at its own pace or you can hit a down arrow and it'll flip through the pages. And the best speakers, I think the, I can't remember which YouTubers but a lot. I mean I heard someone talking about this. They use bullet points so they'll put PowerPoint slides on and then flip through it and then they just know each bullet point will prompt them their memory to speak about that next topic. And so yeah, one thing I always try to tell people when you're starting out too is like the reality is people like hardly anyone's going to see your first videos. You know, that's, that's your learning period. And so use those first videos to just. I'm not saying to put out crap, but it's going to, it's, it's going to be your worst video. You're going to look back at it and cringe because every single time you make another video it's going to, your skills are going to get better. You're going to see things in the previous one. It's like, oh crap, I can't believe I use that font. Or that was like such a terrible edit I did right there. And so, so the paradox of creating anything is you're going to suck in the beginning and you just have to like put out that first thing and it's hard to get over that, that mentally to like take that jump. But once you do, then, then that's when you can start improving. And so. So yeah, hopefully that takes a little bit of the pressure off. Is that like no one's looking anyways compared to hopefully later when you have thousands and tens of thousands of subscribers. But scripting helps a lot. So if you have your perfect script, then it's. It's going to make a lot better video because you're not going to be like I am right now, just thinking off the cuff and kind of rambling and going off on tangents and losing my train of thought. If you have a script, you stick to the point, you can spend time revising it and getting. Cutting all the fluff, making a really good joke, making a really good metaphor, you know, all that kind of stuff that you can do. And, and then you just have to read it and it's hard. It's. That's another skill is like trying to read it naturally without it sounding really overly prepared. But if you can write like you speak and then you can read, Read it how you would speak naturally, then that's the end goal and it takes practice. Um, so anyways, back for how I do it for this particular video, I think that was just an unscripted intro. But what I'll often do is, is use the teleprompter for the intro because I'll have like a hook that you want to get exactly right and you want to like, you know, make your point and be fast, be specific. That's not the place to have a tangent. But then it'll go from the hook into me actually showing the whatever I'm teaching in Descript. And descript I know so well at this point that I don't have to have a script. And it wouldn't really make sense to do that anyways because unexpected things happen. Like a little error happens or a little whatever, you know, it's more. It's more impromptu. So I'll just go, I'll have an idea in my head of like what I'm going to show and how the technique I'm going to show to get there. Cause in descript there's 10 different ways to do everything. So. So yeah, with software, that's how I would approach it is you don't have to have like an exact script, but if it's like a. Well, even a vlog. I almost said a vlog. A vlog, you know, that would be completely impromptu too. You're out and about in the world. You're filming yourself with a selfie style and probably have no script. But for something like theoretical, where you're just talking about a certain point, you have a specific point to make, then I would recommend a script. Okay, I think I've repeated myself a lot on that. Yeah, no problem. Thanks for the question. And I plan to do more stuff, talk more about that, because I've. I've done so much Descript stuff that it's kind of like I'm kind of out of the big topics to discuss on that. And now I'm kind of moving on to, like, talking about cameras and talking about. I'll probably do an episode about teleprompters once I. Once I feel good enough to. To teach it with authority. Because right now I'm still very new to it. So figuring it all out, I have a. It's called Neewer. Newer. I'm not sure how you pronounce it, but it's a pretty affordable camera brand. They have tripods, lights. Um, I have a few other pieces of gear, but it's. It's good. It's a good teleprompter. I think there's better ones, or there's definitely better ones that are smaller and easier to set up. Like, this one's overkill. Cause I thought I was gonna use it with my iPad, which I did for a while, but it was a little tedious. And what I find myself actually doing is using my phone. I just set my phone up under the. The mirror of the teleprompter, and it's just a lot more manageable than the. The iPad. But. Yeah. And so you can get a good teleprompter. You can get one for your phone that's just meant for your phone for like 50 bucks. I don't know, it's. It doesn't have to be super expensive. So. Yeah. Any other questions? Appreciate the ones so far. Oh, okay. So. Oh, glad. Thank you. Thank you. So my. The AI feature I use the most is this one right here. Add chapters. And I already did it. So, like that chapter right there. And by the way, so these are markers in descript, but once you put it into YouTube, it becomes a chapter. And those are the things where viewers can click to specific parts of the video. So, like, this is actually not a good chapter name, because somebody sees introduction, they're like, okay, whatever, skip over that. Let's go to the meat of it. So that's actually not a best practice, but right here, planning the route and preparing the map so that's something that Descripts AI came up with, becomes a chapter. And then inside of YouTube that'll be. It'll separate that part of the video where the viewer can just click on it and it'll take them right to that timestamp. So yeah, highly recommend using the chapters again. Depends what you're doing because some, some YouTubers will say that that kills retention because people will just skip to the parts they want and skip everything else. But for what I do, it makes sense because people can just see like, okay, there's this whole video about templates, but all I need to see is how do I edit a template and then they can just skip to that part of the video and it makes life easy for them. So yeah, basically here you can prompt how many chapters you want to create. I always leave it on auto and it usually creates. Well, it depends. Sometimes it creates one every minute, sometimes it creates five minutes. It does a pretty good job about knowing like I make a lot of videos where it's like five, five ways to do X and then it'll pull out each of those five parts and say like number one, number two, number three. Does a really good job about that. So yeah, I really like that feature. I've been very impressed with it. The clips. I use this for clients. I don't make clips myself. Part of my new strategy that I started this live stream with is I'm not going to do shorts anymore at all. It doesn't make sense for education channel. But depending what you're doing, if you're doing like a podcast or entertainment show, then clips can be great. Highlight reel will make a longer instead of a clip being like as of a week ago, YouTube shorts are now three minutes. I don't know if you knew that by the way, that's useful information. It used to be clip had to be vertical and 60 seconds or less. Now it's 180 seconds or less. So anyways, you can specify how long you want it to be here and how many you want it to create and then you can put it into a template and hit submit and it'll generate. It'll look through your script, find those key moments and then create clips for you. And again, it's only going off of the transcript. So it doesn't have tone of voice, it doesn't have laughter, it doesn't have any anything else to base its decision off of. And so that's why the human is still going to be better for this. Use your own judgment, but your results may vary and generate an image. This is pretty cool. This is just dall E. So I could tell it create a hand drawn image of a camera on a tripod, hit submit. So you can give it like a style, you can give it what you want it to create. And the more detailed you are, the better. So people say like 35 millimeter film, 1970s style, they'll, you know, get really, really detailed. And the more detailed you are, the better it'll do. But let's see what it comes up with. So pretty cool. There it is. And if I click on it, it'll add it to my project. Nice. So that's pretty awesome. I love that. And that's Dolly Open AI's image generator. And I imagine in the not too distant future, right below that there's going to be a generate video button and you'll just type in generate a video of a cat flying through space. And it'll do it because yeah, they, they get open AI's products. So. Oh, translate. This is pretty cool and new. So you can translate the transcript into any of These other languages, 23 different languages, and that'll be just the transcript. So if I do French, hit submit, it's gonna take just a second here. There it is. So this is a different view than what I've shown previously where it would have this like pop up window and then the, the new language was in its own window. Now it's just straight in your editor. So there's my French version and there's my English original version and it even translated the title. And then up here you can switch back. So there I'm back in original and I'm back in French. And if I had other languages, those would all be stacked up underneath. And if I want to make another one, I just hit new translation and I translate into the next language. And if I hit this thing, dub speech, that's going to also translate the voice. But it's asking me whose voice should we use. And so since it's me speaking, I'm going to just do the voice that I've trained it on into USB mini like that and I'll hit submit. And this one's going to take a little bit longer because there's a lot more processing. Oh, okay. Yeah. So the, the transcript is already done, but it's still generating the speech and that's going to take a little while. So yeah, question is, how did I come up with the idea to make content learning courses around descript? Yeah, good question. So kind of a long story, kind of an evolution. I was doing something different. I was a business broker and I was making videos for YouTube, kind of like I am now, but about my topic. And I was having a lot of fun making the videos using descript. I was getting really good with it and I started to do some freelance editing. I was like, oh, it'd be kind of fun to just like make some videos for other people just because I liked it as a hobby. And then one client asked me, could you. Could I pay you to teach me how to use this? And I was like, sure, that sounds great. And so that was my first tutoring session. And then I was like, huh, this is easier than editing. Because it's just one defined hour. Editing is like you got to wait for a client to send you a logo and you got to get feedback and revisions. And it's just kind of a. It's a lot of work. But teaching I found really fun. And it was just easy. It was easy in that it was just one hour done on the way. And so yeah, I set that up as a service. I set that up as its own gig on the freelance platform that I was on. And then I set up. There was a lot of demand. People started booking me a lot. And so I set up my own website. And then people started finding me there. And then, oh, and I made the YouTube channel before I even made a website. And then people started asking for the course. So I was like, okay, I'll make a course. And here we are. And, and why this tool? Well, I started, when I started to use it, I just fell in love with how easy it was. It was like I. My earliest business broker videos for my other channel was just the webcam. I was just talking into the webcam using description and it was just amazing how, you know, applied studio sound. I had no gear at that time. I got like a. You could see my whole studio. It's. It's crazy now, but when I was starting out it was just built in microphone, built in webcam and zero lighting. Just simple. And that was it. It was great. So yeah, it's been a, it's been an evolution through the last over two years now since I found descript. So yeah, it started it very much as a side thing. And then I think it was around November of last year that I made it my full time focus. Oh, is it, is it slow? Hey. Hey Rod. Thanks for joining. It does say my. The stream's bitrate is lower than recommended. Anyways, let's see here. Let me know if any other Questions? Oh, it is really slow. Okay. It crashed. That's why. How is my stream? Haven't checked it over here. That looks good. What I wanted to. If. Unless. Feel free to drop any other questions in the chat. Otherwise I wanted to just circle back to my new offer. So the. The Descript Mastery School, you can, you can sample it if you can edit a word doc. You. Hang on, let me pause that. You can sample it 14 day trial for $9 and then it goes into a yearly subscription and again that gets you access to two weekly group coaching calls just like this one where you can come in, ask questions, all that type of stuff and you also get access to the full course and then at the end of the 14 days, if it's not worth it to you, I know it's. It's not cheap, then you can cancel and no issues. But hopefully you'll join and you'll see that it's going to save you a lot more than $219 of your time to. To be able to get answers quickly and all that kind of stuff when you're going about creating your YouTube content or courses or whatever you have and what else. I guess I'll keep going through underlord stuff in the last few minutes here. So you can use. There's also this right section where you can brainstorm. I don't know if you've ever used this before, but you can ask it for a starting point like create a video about whatever your topic is. Create a video about travel in Europe. I hit submit and look at that. It's so fast and I don't know which ChatGPT I've been asked like is it chat GPT4O? Is it ChatGPT3? I'm not sure. Probably four. Yeah, it doesn't say there. I don't think it says in their help articles either last time I checked. But yeah, I'd imagine they're at least on four now. And so from here you can put this in your script for a mini. Yeah, yeah, it very well could be. So yeah, you can, you can copy this, you can paste it into another app if you wanted or into another project or you can hit add to script and it'll automatically add that. Or I can replace my script with this button here or I can do a follow up. I can say this is good but make it shorter or make it funnier, something like that and it'll update accordingly. So in the chat, could you show me how to apply templates to your video? For example, if I want to apply subtitles template to my video. Yeah, so with subtitles specifically. And descript uses the word caption. So caption is the burnt in subtitles, the words on the bottom. There's this whole captions tab right here. And these are all templates, effectively they're, they're from descript. So you can use these as a starting point. So like I use this, this is my go to right here. Click on that and it's applying a map. There it is. So it looks like that. And if you click on it, then you can change the font, you can change like the, the weight, the size, all that kind of stuff. So you could use these as a starting point. That's a really good thing to do. And then let's see, where was I going to go? I got distracted. Scene. Okay, so scene is where your actual templates are. So, so if you make your own. Okay, here, let me, let me just demo demonstrate this. I'm going to make it red. I'm going to make it so that the fill word is blue. That doesn't look good. Let me do like a light gray. Okay, so let me say that this is my template. Oops, let me change that to blue. Let me say that this is my template. I can change my view here. And this is scene number eight. So. Or no, scene number six that I'm in. So I could right click on it. I could say save layout and create new template and then I can call it caption. I'm not going to go through all that. But basically this is how you could save that scene as a template and then you could use it in future projects. Now, one problem with the way I have this set up is that's also going to save this webcam view. It's going to save the zoom, like everything that I did. It's going to save that whole thing as a template. And real quick, I'm down to the last two minutes here, so let me. I'm just going to check my schedule that I can keep going a little bit over. Okay. Yeah, I'm good to keep going. So. So that's one way to do it. That's, that's how I would recommend doing it is like using these as a starting point, tweaking the colors, tweaking the font, all that until it looks how you want. Yeah. Template equals layout. It's so. It used to, they used to just use the word layout everywhere, but they're, they're evolving the big focus. I heard the CEO Descript talking recently. And the next big like generation update of descript is going to be all about templates, like updating the whole flow of templates and layouts and stuff like that. And so this stuff is always changing. And right now it says layout. As of a few weeks ago it said save as template. So yeah, a little confusing but yeah, the Netflix thing. So I'll show you how to how that looks. So if I go to browse all again this is under Scene, Browse all Drive and Gallery by the way is where all descripts built in stuff is here. So feel free to look through those. But then drive. There it is. Netflix style subtitles so this is part of my template pack and if I click on it, I just click on this one. I have one for vertical, one for square, the. But this is my landscape one. So I click on it and it removed my video but it changed the template or the. The caption style to this. And here's the problem with the new updates to descripts templates. They. They're. They pretty much don't work at all right now because of this. It. It removed my background before. It would just add this as a layer to my video. But this is effectively useless now until they figure out what they're going to do with the whole layout situation. So yeah, take that for what it's worth. But. And the. And then I can, I can still use this. What I have to do is bring back those layers but basically it hid those layers because that's just how the template works. Instead of adding the layer, it changed the property of my other two layers to make them hidden. Really confusing, I know. But it's all gonna get better soon, hopefully. Okay, so there was another question. How to get 4K resolution. Ah, yeah, yeah. So sorry, I never followed up on that. The. I have my pocket right here. Have you checked your. That your cable supports alt mode? Let me, let me actually try right now. Let's see if I can switch to this in 4K. Turn that off. So sorry for people wondering what I'm doing. I have this camera called a DJI Pocket 3 and it's 4K camera but it's a little tricky to use and you can use it as a webcam, but it's not super straightforward. Why is it not? Oh, this isn't even plugged in. I'm not going to be able to do this actually because I have. I have too many things plugged in already. I have my microphone, I have this and my second monitor. Probably not a good idea to do it live anyways. Because I might lose the feed. But yeah, let me, let me experiment with that. The important thing is I think you have to have a cable that supports alt mode and then yeah, I got to play around with it to see if I had what I had to do in obs and stuff to get 4K. Does YouTube captions come from transcript a video from descript or YouTube? So yeah, we were having that discussion about the transcript earlier about. I was saying like it might not even matter. It doesn't matter from YouTube's perspective. They do their own automatic transcribing. So what you see in descript isn't going to show up in YouTube by default. Now you can over. You can override YouTube's automatic ones by publishing export transcript and then export your own transcript that you've already cleaned up and perfected. Right. Or sorry rather it would be subtitles. So you could export your subtitles and then post that to your YouTube studio for the video and it'll override YouTube's automatic ones. And. But yeah, by default YouTube will do their own. It doesn't come attached with your video. Yeah, so yeah. So Rod, on the, on the descript side, all you can do is select the camera. But here's. Okay, actually this will be. This is a good thing to show. So you see how there's this thing called OBS Virtual camera. I'm on OBS right now for this live stream and let me see if that'll. No, it won't. Okay, so basically you would set up a virtual camera through obs and you would select the OSMO Pocket as your camera and you would select it as 4K and then you would choose OBS Virtual Camera. And then the other important thing is that your project is in 4K. So if you click on this. Oh, and this is new as of yesterday, I think where they, they show YouTube, Instagram, TikTok. That's useful. But if you click other, you want to make sure your project is in 4k because you could have a 4k camera but it might put it into like a 1080p project and then you're. It's just reducing your, your video quality. So that's another thing to check is that your project is in 4K and then you want to as well publish it at 4k. So a lot of, a lot of different points where you got to check it to, to get it right. If you have time. Could you also demonstrate how do you act some effect to your video like your own logo animated somewhere? Is it too time consuming task So I have a, this end screen right here. Let me open this up. So I have this like standard 5 second end screen that I made a template out of. And that template has this soundtrack, this background. So this like blue gradient, purple gradient thing, it has my logo, it has the words Watch next and it has a captions layer but there's no words so it doesn't show up. But the idea with this is this plays at the last five seconds of the video. And then in YouTube studio I would add the, that link that pops up next. That would be a recommended video. So, so that's a template and the way I added. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's a super important step because it, it can drop down your, your video quality. So. Sorry, I was responding to the comment. I need to get better at like staying on task instead of changing to the topic or changing to the question. Yeah, so, so this is a template that just has these layers. So you can just, you can kind of dissect how this works. Like you could just add a soundtrack, you could change your background to be whatever you want. You could add your. What did you ask about your logo? So you could add your logo same way. And then once you have that set, the same thing I showed you before, you could right click on that whole scene and say save layout. And then that could be your standard outro that you use on all your videos. Yeah, that type of thing. Second to that. Let me take this, let me take my logo and show you how you could create that from scratch. Actually, let me leave it there. I'm going to make a new scene. So I'll hit slash and then I'm going to drag my logo layer into that new scene and let me change the background so you can see this a little easier. Okay, so there's my logo in a blank scene and if I want this to for example, animate so that it pops out of the top, I'll click on Animation plus. And this is really cool, these in and out features. So this is how that image will come into the scene and then out is how it will leave the scene. So for in, I could have it blur in, fade in scale, slide, etc. I'm going to do slide and I'm going to have it slide down and this is how long it's going to take. This is a little demonstration of how the animation is going to happen. So none is going to be like a consistent speed. And then yeah, all of these are. I did a video about that if you want to check it out. Where you can see all the different animations. Distance is how drastic the animation is going to be. And then fade is going to be like have a fade in or not. And if I hit this little play button, pay attention to how it looks. So there it is. It slides out of the top and lands where I told it to. And if I hit this up arrow, it's going to slide from the bottom up. So here it is like that left, etc. So you can play around with those and then same thing with out at the hover, over out. And I like scale scales where it'll in the case of an in scale it'll pop in and then for a scale out it'll pop out. And so I'll play this. So you see that how it just like got sucked in basically. I think that's a cool effect. And then that same thing, those animations, you can also do that with text. You can do that with other video layers. And any visual element you can animate like that. Except. Except capture. Oh, let's see. Captions you can kind of animate. Yeah. Anyways, hopefully that answers your question. But so basically the steps are you would add a layer and then you would add your. Apply an animation to that layer. And that's what creates these effects. Yeah. And canva is awesome. Like, so the in and out thing I just showed you didn't exist until like two months ago in Descript. And so I often did Canva as well. Canvas got way more fancy animations. Like the typewriter effect. Descript kind of has that now with. Oh, I won't be able to see it on a, on a, on a logo. But if I add a text layer, let me write. This is my text layer I'm going to animate. Okay. So I just added a text layer and then as before, when I click on it, there's this animation thing I can scroll down, hit plus and there's my in and out. And you can see I have different options here. There's an appear, there's a reveal. I think those are the only. Oh, spin as well. I think those are the only differences from what we saw before. But if I do appear, I can set where it appears word by word or character by character. So that's like a typewriter effect. Like tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick each word one at a time. And so I really like that effect for a lot of things. And then you can add in the sound effect in the background where it sounds like someone's typing. And if I demo that that's kind of fast. So slow that down to like 1.5 seconds. Like that. Pretty cool. So I used to always have to go to Canva to do that until like a couple of months ago. And yeah, so can you question in the chat, can you record but without describing it, I assume you mean transcribing it automatically because it takes time and credit. Yeah. So first of all, what I would recommend is go into your settings. So in the top left settings and then right here, always ask before transcribing, toggle that on. And then when you bring a video or audio into your descript project, a thing will pop up and say do you want to transcribe it? And then just say no or it doesn't say no, you just have to cancel out of it. And then it won't transcribe it. You have to explicitly tell it yes, transcribe this. And then, then it'll do it. So yeah, that's, that's a little trick there. Oh, and by the way, I mentioned the, the, the manually adding your own transcript to override descripts transcript. If you do that, it doesn't eat transcription time. So that's another little trick for you. If you, if you have a perfect video where it's like there's no retakes or anything, then you can add your clean transcript with. Where is that? Why is it not showing oh recordings. That was a sequence replace and then replace transcript with your clean transcript, then that will not eat transcript time. So if that's a concern, that's a little workaround for you. I have, I mean I edit obviously a ton of videos and I've never hit my 30 hours a month. Now if I was on the 10 hour a month plan, I might, I'd probably be close to that every month. But. And I'm also making short stuff. I understand if you have like hour long podcasts with like three or four guests, like that would add up really, really fast. So what is a sequence versus recording? So a sequence is a container of layers. So these recordings are the individual files. So and these come from descript. These are made in descript. So the ZVE10 2 is my camera's name and then computer audio. So those are separate layers for each of those inputs. So a camera file and then a computer audio file. And if I had like right there, computer audio and screen. So when I start showing my screen, that's another file. So those are the individual files and then those get put into these containers called sequences. So if I click on the Sequence, it opens this little preview. I hit edit sequence. These over here on the left are the two files. So there's my, my camera and audio file and then there's the computer audio file, which actually is empty. So this, this makes more sense in a podcast if you have. Like I'll just for demonstration purposes, let's say this is speaker A. And then, so that's Speaker A's video and audio. And then down here you have speaker B. And then let's say that speaker A's microphone is, is too loud compared to speaker B. I can just select. Well, I could, I could. Here, let me make this easier. I could just select the whole track for speaker A and just lower his volume without affecting Speaker B. Or if they're talking over each other, I could mute speaker B in certain parts without affecting speaker A. And so this is just how you do that. Oh, and so, so with this container, when I edit it in my timeline, it's going to keep everything in sync. So if I make a cut in the timeline, it's going to cut all the files in the sequence proportionally so that nothing gets out of sync. So yeah, yeah, it's a, it's a more advanced skill, but a critical skill for any multi layer, multi layer editing. So yeah, what's so good with adding your own transcript is that it won't eat up time on your, your monthly allocation of transcript time and you can have a perfect transcript. So if you wrote it in like a Google Doc or a Word Doc, you have your perfectly edited copy and then you can just override what Descript has with all its errors and punctuation mistakes and things like that. Yeah, I should wrap up here as well, but thank you for joining. And yeah, as I said, let me shout it out one more time for anyone that's still hanging out. You can join the Descript Mastery School 14 day trial for $9. See if it's for you, see if it's worth it and get started learning Descript and making good videos. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for joining. Bye.
