Which Descript Plan Should I Choose?

Descript's Free plan gives you 1 hour of transcription and watermarked exports; Creator adds 10 hours and removes watermarks for $12/month; Pro unlocks 30 hours, 4K video, unlimited AI effects, and full stock library for $24/month. Annual billing saves 20%.
Descript has three membership tiers for consumers. There's the Free Plan, Creator and Pro. Let's talk about each one and how to pick the right one for you. There's also a custom tier, but that is for enterprise level customers who have huge teams of editors or otherwise neat features above and beyond what's available in the Pro tier. I won't talk about that in this video, but you will need to reach out to Descript for more information about that. So first of all, you find all of this information yourself@ descript.com pricing that is what I have pulled up on my screen and I'll include that link in the description of this video. And while you're down there, make sure to like this video. It is October 25, 2023 as I record this. So bear in mind that some things, the features, the plans, the prices may have changed by the time you watch this in the future. And if you haven't downloaded Descript yet, I will leave an affiliate link where you can download it yourself for free. The first thing we see on the pricing page is this box. All three plans come with transcription, editing, screen recording, templates, stock media, and captions. The next thing is that you can choose to pay monthly or for an entire year up front. By paying for a year, it costs 20% less than if you pay monthly, but you have that choice. So the first question here to ask yourself is do I need descript just temporarily for maybe a couple months, or is this something I will use for a long time? If the first you're better off paying monthly for as long as you need it. Maybe it's just a month, maybe three months. But the other thing to know is that you can start on a monthly basis and switch over to annual at any point. So it's a good way to test it out and see if you need all the features. So that's your first decision point. Monthly or Annual the next thing is right below the monthly or annual toggle is how many editors will you have? If it's just you, this is easy. It has one in here by default and you can just leave it at one. But let's say that you have an editor that you work with. You can put two in here, you can toggle it up or you can type it into the box there and that is one seat for yourself and one for your editor. So it should be obvious, but you will pay more for each editor seat. And as you can see when I changed the number, the price goes up. The price per month is the Same, but the annual amount build is now double for two editors. And no, there are no bulk discounts. Whether there is one or 100 in here, the price will be the same per seat. So if I type in 100 editors, it's now you're looking at $14,400 billed annually. And at that point you're probably going to want to consider the enterprise plan. But I'm gonna go ahead and return this to one. And I know what some of you are thinking, can't I just make one account and share it with multiple people? You know, share it with my fiverr Freelancer or my va? And the answer is yes, that is possible. But descript doesn't like that. There's a strong likelihood your account will get frozen if you try doing that. So I encourage you, do things the right way. Pay for the membership if you're gonna have multiple editors in your drive. And trust me, descript is an incredible value and it's worth every penny for all the features that you get. But right below the editor, seats are your basic seats. What are basic seats? Basic seats are free. You can add as many basic seats to your drive as you want. It won't cost you anything. But basic seats are super limited. There's another link I'm going to leave in the description, which will take you to this page, which explains the difference between drive membership types and. And you can see here we have the basic and the editor. Those are your two types of drive members. And basically, if you read into this, almost all that the basic members can do is comment on projects and view projects. They can't edit, they can't save, they can't really do much of anything. So that's why it's free. And by the way, once again, if you don't already have descript, you can use my affiliate link in the description to create your account for free and get started. But the next thing you want to think about as you're deciding which plan is right for you is by looking at these key features. These are the core features that makes descript really stand out above other editors. So the next question to ask yourself is, how many hours of video per month will I be editing? This is important to estimate because descript gives you 1 hour, 10 hours or 30 hours of transcription, respectively, on the free creator and pro plans. So that's our first column. Here is the transcription hours. Then after that, consider do you use remote recording? This is the integration with SquadCast. Are you recording interviews for your podcast or YouTube channel on SquadCast? If so, this next question is important for you. Will you be doing one 10 or 30 hours per month? If so, you only get one hour on the free, 10 hours on the Creator, and 30 hours on the Pro. After that, how many videos will you create per month? Descript gives you a free one single free watermark, free video per month on the free tier and then unlimited on both the Creator and Pro plans. That is said differently, you can export as many videos as you want and they won't have watermarks on the paid plans. As for the video resolution on the free plan, you'll be capped at 720p resolution on your exports, which while on both paid tiers you can have unlimited exports at 4K resolution. Moving on to the filler word removal tool, with the Free and Creator plans, it'll only be looking for and on the Pro plan it'll look for those +18 more common filler words like you know so and even repeated words if you repeat yourself while you're thinking. With the next feature, the AI Voices 1 this is Descript's ability to recreate your voice with AI and allow you to type things out that'll be spoken in your voice. With the two lower plans, Free and Creator, you can only have a 1000 word vocabulary and descript has a help article with those thousand words. They're the thousand most common words in the English language. But if you're on the Pro plan, you get unloaded. Big advantage there if you plan to use the AI voice. As for the next three the AI green screen, AI, eye contact and studio sound, you're limited to 10 minutes on the free plan, 60 minutes on the creator plan, and no limit at all on the Pro plan. So the question here would be how long are my videos on average and do I need those features? And the final feature under the key features section is the stock library descript has built in stock videos, stock images and sound. On the free plan you will still be able to use these, but when you search something in the stock library, you'll only be able to apply one of the top five results. So for example, if you search for a picture of an airport, you'll get all the pictures of airports. There will be hundreds. You can only use one of the top five results from that search. With the Creator plan you can choose from the top 12, and with the Pro plan you can use absolutely anything in the stock library, and that is videos, images, sounds, music and GIFs. So that was the key features. If we scroll down through the other features, you can See for your particular use cases, what you might need or not need. From here I'll just point out a couple things that are important to me. The first thing that we haven't already talked about is the amount of storage space that you get in descripts cloud. With the free plan you only get 5 gigabytes of cloud storage, which is like 1 or 230 minute projects at 1080p, which again you can't even export at 1080p, so it doesn't matter. In the free plan, with the creator you get 100 gigabytes, which is significantly more. And with Pro you get a full terabyte. I've been using descript for over a year for client work. I have literally thousands of videos in my drive and I'm nowhere close to capacity. So for me, having this amount of cloud storage has been really nice. And then lastly, if you're doing professional work like me, Pro gives you the ability to to use custom branding on your drive. This is what this is right here. This means when you are viewing a video hosted on descripts cloud, you can put your logo at the top like this. With the free and creator plans, you cannot do this. It'll just be the descript logo at the top. Okay, so that has been most of what you need to know about how to choose the right descript plan for your particular editing needs. If you still have questions that I haven't answered, leave them in the comments for the benefit of all viewers and and I will respond as soon as I can. And again, if you haven't created a Descript account yet, I will leave an affiliate link in the description below.
