3 Uncommon drinks that MELT BELLY FAT…in days (no exercise)

YouTube talk by Dr. Ashley Lucas (uploaded Jan 2, 2026) explaining how morning drinks influence blood glucose, insulin and belly-fat storage and offering three actionable morning beverages to support metabolic flexibility and reduce abdominal fat: mineral/electrolyte water first thing upon waking, a low-sugar "clean" coffee with added healthy fat 60–90 minutes after waking, and a pre-meal apple-cider-vinegar tonic to blunt post-meal glucose spikes. The video also cites a small behavioral study (adults 50–70 on a 1,200 kcal diet; drinking 16 oz water before meals lost ~4–5 lb more over 12 weeks) and promotes Dr. Ashley’s products and PhD Weight Loss program.
Questions this video answers
January 2, 2026.
1) Mineral/electrolyte water; 2) Clean coffee with metabolic support (optional healthy fats like heavy cream, ghee, or MCT); 3) Pre-meal blood-sugar tonic using ~1 tablespoon raw apple cider vinegar (with the 'mother').
About 1 tablespoon of raw apple cider vinegar, taken ~10–15 minutes before your largest meal (can be used before other meals).
First thing on waking: water with electrolytes/minerals (warm preferred). Wait ~45–60 minutes after that water before consuming coffee; coffee recommended 60–90 minutes after waking.
In a study of adults ages 50–70 on a ~1,200 kcal/day diet, the group that drank ~16 oz (two glasses) of water 30 minutes before each meal lost about 4–5 pounds more than the non-water group after 12 weeks.

Most people start their morning with drinks that quietly raise their insulin and make that belly fat harder to lose. So today I am going to walk you through three drinks that do the exact opposite. These drinks will support your metabolism, will help to lower insulin. We don't want to have chronically elevated levels of insulin and will help you lose that belly fat. So let's dive in. Now, before we dive into discussing these specific three drinks, it's really important, I believe, for you to understand what's happening in your body, like why it's important for you to make these potentially different decisions around what you're drinking in the morning. So what happens in our body when we consume a lot of sugar or a lot of carbohydrates, or maybe not even that many carbohydrates or sugar, but when it's one of the first things that you consume in the morning, it's going to spike your blood glucose levels. Now, it's totally normal to have fluctuating blood glucose levels. It should go up and then it should go back down. The problem is when our blood sugar becomes chronically elevated, when we have chronically elevated blood glucose, we get into trouble. Now, at any given time, the body can only tolerate one to two teaspoons of sugar. Most of the drinks and the foods that we consume throughout the day and particularly in the morning, we've been conditioned to consume sweet things over savory. Well, what happens is we take in more than one to two teaspoons of sugar. Most breakfast items, most drinks that we're drinking have about 19 teaspoons of sugar in them on average. I told you that at any given time, the body can only tolerate one to two teaspoons. So that 19 teaspoons is a big stressor on the body. And so what the body is going to do is it needs to get that sugar out of the bloodstream. When that sugar is left in the bloodstream for long periods of time, that's when you become pre diabetic or type 2 diabetic. So the body mounts this response. And this is a normal response, but it goes and tells the pancreas, okay, you need to secrete insulin. And I want you to imagine that insulin is like a key. And what it does is it goes around to your cell in your body, particularly your muscle cells, and it knocks on the door of your muscle cells. Let's just use this as an example. And it opens the door to those muscle cells, so that sugar that's stuck in the blood can flow in and you can use that Sugar as energy. Now, that's what happens in a healthy individual, in an individual who does not have specifically excess belly fat. When you have excess belly fat, your body is likely not working this way anymore. And I want you to imagine that your cells now have a them. So when you consume these sugars and carbohydrates in all their varied forms, your pancreas now mounts a response and it secretes insulin. Insulin acts like this key and it goes to open up the cells. But I want you to imagine that your muscle cells now have a callus over them. This sugar cannot get into the muscle cell anymore. I want you to imagine that this muscle cell is locked down, it's on lockdown. So now this sugar is stuck outside of the bloodstream with nowhere to go. Now, the body's very smart. It doesn't like to be pre diabetic or type 2 diabetic. And this happens even if you are diabetic or pre diabetic. But the sugar has to go somewhere. So it goes into your liver. Now, at some point, the liver is going to be at full capacity as well. It's not going to be able to take in any more sugar. It's at capacity, it's full. So what it's going to do is it's going to convert that excess sugar as fat. Now, you have fatty liver and you might be super confused because you think, oh my gosh, I'm eating everything low fat, fat free, I'm following a vegetarian or vegan diet, or I'm avoiding red meat. I'm not eating butter. What the heck is happening? Well, now you know, those foods, those quote unquote healthy foods and drinks that you're consuming are converting into sugar. The body can't tolerate that much sugar, so it's flipping over into fat and now we're storing it as fat. Now it's going to continue to convert the sugar as fat, not just in the liver, but it's going to continue to store fat around the body, specifically in the belly area. So what I want you to understand is that when you have chronically elevated levels of blood glucose and you have chronically elevated levels of insulin, you're going to be in a fat storage mode. Whenever Insulin, insulin is chronically elevated, it's going to flip off the switch to burning fat for fuel. So this is why we want to focus on these specific drinks, because drinks are the easiest way, one of the easiest ways to act as a trigger, to either trigger the body to store food and energy as fat or to burn it as fuel. So let's talk about these different levers that we can pull through the drinks that we're consuming specifically in the morning. Now, if balancing your meals and creating metabolically friendly habits in your life lifestyle feels overwhelming and you feel like you do not want to do it alone, then you should check out PhD weight loss because this is exactly what we do. We're going to learn about you and your current lifestyle, your habits, your goals, your health history, and create a personalized and customized program just for you. We will guide you on exactly what, when, how much to eat throughout the day, and take out all of the guesswork when it comes to dropping that stubborn body fat, specifically in the belly area. So if this is something that you struggle with, definitely check out PhD weight loss. Just head on over to the description and there will be a link where you can click to learn more. All right. One of the first drinks you can consume in the morning to help you burn stubborn belly fat is mineral water. So drinking mineral water over plain water is important because the minerals in the water helps to support hydration, helps to stabilize your morning cortisol rhythm, and prevents insulin spikes. We know the science shows that hydration improves metabolic flexibility. We understand that electrolytes support adrenal function, they help to reduce stress driven hunger. We know that electrolytes and minerals in water help to calm your appetite and stabilize blood sugar early in the day. This is exactly why I actually created a specific electrolyte mix just for folks going through a weight loss and weight loss maintenance phase. I've worked with thousands of clients, like over 11,000 clients to date, helping them drop massive weight. And I found that the majority of clients who just consumed plain water felt like crap. And by crap I mean they didn't have good energy, they couldn't sleep well, they had fatigue, they had headaches, they felt kind of like they had the flu, little flu like symptoms. And this is just a sign of dehydration. But we also know that during weight loss it's a big stressor on the body. It's ultimately a good healthy stressor. But when we are in the process of dropping weight, it can pull on the adrenals, I can pull on the thyroid. So I created an electrolyte mix that includes specific vitamins and minerals to support those organs, to support your thyroid, to support your adrenals, to make the process of dropping weight as easy and as simple and feel as good as possible. So if you are going through a weight loss phase or you are maintaining weight loss, if you are using GLP1 specifically, you need to focus on hydration and make sure that you've got minerals in your water, you've got electrolytes in your water. One thing you want to make sure that you do the first thing that touches your tongue in the morning is water, specifically water with some kind of electrolyte in there. If you don't want to use an electrolyte mix or an electrolyte powder, you can make your own. You can make sure to put some salt, some sea salt or Celtic sea salt and a squeeze of lemon in your water. That's what I generally do in the morning if I'm not using electrolytes. But that is the first thing that touches your tongue specifically. It's helpful for the body and reducing stress if that water is slightly warm. So warm lemon water, warm water with salt and lemon in it, warm water with some electrolytes in there, just not super cold water. First thing upon waking. And then what a good goal is is to wait about 45 to 60 minutes or so until you have coffee or breakfast just to let that fluid, that water, the electrolytes to soak in and start working in your body. The benefits are going to be reduced crav cravings, improved morning fat burning, and it will help to support steadier blood sugar. Now when I was at Virginia Tech, that's where I earned my PhD in sports nutrition and chronic disease. And I was a part of the weight management laboratory and we were working on a study, conducting a study in a group of older individuals. So what we did was we took adults ages 50 to 70 years old and we put them all on the same low calorie diet. They were all overweight, but we split them into two groups and one group just followed the diet. So they were eating about 1200 calories a day. And then the other group followed the diet and they drank two big glasses of water, basically 16 ounces of water, 30 minutes before each meal, breakfast, lunch and dinner. After 12 weeks both groups lost weight, but the water group lost about 4 to 5 pounds more than the non water group. Same food, same time period. The only difference was the water before meals. So the question I always ask is why did we see those results? What happened in the body? Well, a few different reasons. Water takes up space in your stomach, so you're going to Feel full sooner and you're ultimately going to eat fewer calories throughout the day. It replaces sugary drinks. So when you're drinking water and not drinking sugar, you will have less total calories. But also most importantly, what those calories do in your body, which I just explained, you're going to have less of a blood sugar high and compensatory low. You're going to have reduced insulin and therefore you're going to have increased increased fat storage. And then staying hydrated does something in the body. It helps the body burn energy and it helps to control hunger signals better. So just something as simple as drinking this mineral water 16 ounces before breakfast, lunch and dinner can help your body burn fat immensely. All right. Drink number two is clean coffee with metabolic support. So coffee can be helpful to your metabolism because of the caffeine, because of the polyphenols they have been shown to enhance fat oxidation. But your coffee will only benefit your body composition if the coffee drink doesn't have a ton of sugar in it. Now, if you are interested in a deep dive behind the science on how coffee can potentially help your fat burning, I did a long episode on the topic. So just head on over into the description, click the link and you can listen to that video or you can watch that video. All right. I have another great resource for you as well. It's free and it is a guide on how to order coffee in a healthy way. So if something like this would be helpful to you, a lot of people have found it really beneficial. Just head on over to the description and there will be a link in there for you to download that free guide. Now let's dive in just very briefly behind the science on how coffee can help your weight loss. So it includes cga, which is fluorogenic. So number one, it includes chlorogenic acid, which helps to improve glucose regulation, helps to reduce the belly fat. Specifically medium roast mold tested organic beans retain more of this chlorogenic cga, a chlorogenic acid, than most dark roasts. Now, one of my favorite brands that is in alignment with it being mold tested is Danger Coffee. It is not inexpensive and I don't have an affiliation with it. I just know that it tastes good and then it goes through a lot of testing because coffee beans in general can have a lot of mold and other toxins in the beans, unfortunately. So if you are trying to live a clean lifestyle, it would be worth checking out Danger Coffee or other brands. Just look at look to make sure that they're tested for mold. Now, something that you can do as an additional benefit when you are drinking your coffee instead of adding the sugars or the sweeteners is to add some kind of healthy fat. My favorite addition to coffee is heavy cream. It's just so delicious. I use a little frother and it makes it taste great. My favorite order at a coffee shop would be some kind of Americano. I generally do not tolerate caffeine well, so I go with a decaf Americano and I'll ask for about a half inch to an inch of steamed heavy cream. And if I'm feeling like something sweet, like a treat, I might have them add a pump or two of sugar free vanilla. But again, in this ordering guide I go through a lot of different options there. There are ways to make your coffee taste amazing and support your overall health goals and even benefit the belly fat burning. When you add the healthy fats to your coffee, it helps to support satiety, meaning that it's going to keep you full longer and it can help maintain a fasting state. Now what I mean by helping you to maintain a fasting state is to be in a true fasting state you need to consume like less than 50 calories. Anything above 50 calories will knock you out of true fasting. Now when you add just a fat into your coffee, it's going to provide you with calories, it will keep you full longer and it will knock you out of a true fasted state. However, it's kind of like climbing underneath the fence and no one knows that you've crossed over because it will give you those calories. But it's not going to knock you out of deep state of fat burn. Because fat like butter, even like heavy cream or MCT oil is not going to spike glucose or spike insulin. And those are the markers or the metabolic situations that knock you out of fat burn. So I hope that this makes sense. It's kind of like a false fast in a way, like a mini dirty fast maybe we could call it that. So if you really are intense in your fasting and you want to go through this true fast and you would not consume more than 50 calories, but if you don't really care about that, still want some of the benefits, but want to stay full longer or new into fasting, this is something you can do is add this healthy fat into your coffee. So how to make it 10 to 12 ounces of a clean medium roast coffee and then you could put in this optional metabolic blend of a tablespoon of grass fed butter or ghee a tablespoon of MCT oil. One note, this is like a public service announcement around MCT oil is that it will cause GI distress if you start too big too soon. And 1 tablespoon of MCT oil is too much for probably 99.9% of people and it will cause GI distress. I took a break from MCT oil and I went back and I consumed like maybe half tablespoon and it was terrible for a whole day. So start with maybe a half teaspoon and work your way up. You could put a pinch of cinnamon in there for additional metabolic support. We know that cinnamon is beneficial for blood sugar stabilization. You would drink this 60 to 90 minutes after waking up. Never immediately remember you're starting with your water, your mineral water. And then a good goal is to stop caffeine by about noon so that doesn't impact negatively your sleep or insulin balance. The benefits are that it supports fat burning, it helps to lower insulin, helps to control cravings, and even help increase mental clarity. All right, drink number three. I'm calling the pre meal blood sugar tonic. So the purpose of this one is to reduce the blood sugar spike after you eat and to minimize belly fat storage. So the science shows that apple cider vinegar can help to flatten post meal glucose spikes. We can see this in the research. We know that it helps to improve insulin sensitivity and supports healthy metabolism. So how you would do this is you would mix about 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. I like the raw apple cider vinegar in it. It has the mother in it. That's the stringy stuff on the bottom is actually really good for the gut. And you would drink this about 10 to 15 minutes before your largest meal. You could do it before all meals. Apple cider vinegar is so impactful, you could actually make a salad Dr. Dressing out of this as well and put it on your veggies and eat that first. The benefits of it is that it helps to flatten glucose spikes like I said earlier, helps to stabilize insulin levels, helps to reduce belly fat storage and helps to support satiety. So it's going to keep you full for a longer period of time. Now a bonus tip if you wanted to go above and beyond is to pair any of these drinks with a 10 to 20 minute walk. Light movement we know increases glucose uptake by the muscles and helps to amplify fat burning. So you could sandwich your meals with some apple cider vinegar in your water before and a nice 10 to 20 minute walk after. Now, if you feel like you are doing all of these things and you are still struggling with blood glucose control and you feel like your body tolerates supplementation. Well, you should check out Glucocet Plus. I created Glucocut plus specifically just like the electrolytes for people who are dropping fat, people who are struggling with belly fat and just want the process of losing belly this excess weight to go as easily and smoothly as possible and to support their body during the stressful process. Luco cup plus has specific ingredients that I put together to help stabilize blood glucose, to help preserve your muscle mass during weight loss, which we know is so important, and to help reduce cravings and hunger.
