7 Groceries With Uniquely High Protein (Rapid Weight Loss)

In this instructional video Dr. Ashley Lucas explains why rapid weight‑loss diets often fail: they strip muscle along with fat, leading to easy weight regain. She argues that adequate high‑quality protein is the missing tool that preserves lean mass, boosts satiety via GLP‑1, and increases diet‑induced thermogenesis. She outlines three core actions for fast, safe fat loss: (1) prioritize protein at every meal, (2) address the mental/emotional habits that drive overeating, and (3) use strategic meal timing (protein at the first and last meals). Lucas then presents seven specific grocery items that are uniquely high in protein and nutritionally supportive – eggs, plain full‑fat Greek yogurt, wild‑caught salmon, sardines, grass‑fed beef, chicken/turkey, and cottage cheese – describing their protein quality, additional nutrients (omega‑3s, calcium, vitamin D, choline, casein), and practical ways to incorporate them. She contrasts whole‑food protein with processed protein bars, emphasizing that real foods better signal fullness. Throughout, she reframes past diet failures as non‑personal, removes shame, and encourages viewers to adopt a protein‑first approach without counting calories. The video also promotes her PhD Weight Loss program and a GlucoCut Plus supplement, providing calls‑to‑action and links. Finally, she gives a concrete behavioral cue: place a protein source at the center of every plate, anchor protein at breakfast and dinner, and monitor hunger and energy over two weeks to experience sustainable fat loss while retaining muscle.

If you have tried to lose weight quickly before and watched it all come rushing back, I need you to hear this first: that was not a character flaw. Most rapid diets fail for one quiet, specific reason: they strip away your muscle along with your fat, and a body that has lost muscle becomes a body that regains weight really easily. So if you have done the crash diets and felt softer and more tired at the end of them, you were not doing it wrong. You were simply never given the one tool that protects you. That tool is protein, and today I'm going to give you 7 groceries that are uniquely high in just that. Now, if you're feeling shame around that last experience of dropping the weight and putting it back on, I want to reframe in a way that takes the shame off the table, because the shame, it's not serving you. And if you're listening to this, you are ready to let that go. Fast weight loss, it's not the enemy. Fast weight loss that eats at your muscle, fast weight loss that doesn't look at the mental, emotional, the habit behavior, that is the main issue. And that's why if you've experienced this before, this weight loss and only regain, if you don't focus on the high-quality protein and also don't focus on the why behind your dropping weight and the habits and behaviors there, it's just a matter of time until the weight comes back. Now, when you anchor every meal with high-quality protein, you can lose weight at a brisk and satisfying pace that will keep the lean muscle on your body that helps your metabolism stay strong so that you can actually keep the weight off for good. Our clients at PhD Weight Loss on average drop about 3 pounds per week for most men and about 2 to 2.5 pounds per week, most women. I'm not even counting calories for our clients. We're just focusing on the amount of protein that they're consuming, and then of course looking at the mental and emotional aspects so that we can truly make a transformation that lasts. The thing about this way of dropping weight is that it's not about willpower, it's not about motivation, it's about giving your body the raw material that it has been missing. So I'm going to show you why protein works specifically. This topic is going to focus on protein, and then I'm going to hand you the exact groceries to buy. Now, protein is the lever for fast and safe fat loss because protein does 3 things almost nothing else can do at the same time. First, it is the most satisfying nutrient you can eat because it powerfully triggers GLP-1. GLP-1 is the fullness hormone everyone is talking about with all of these medications. Your body can make that signal on its own when you feed it correctly. Second, protein protects your muscle while you are in a deficit, so the weight you lose is fat and not metabolic tissue. Can't afford to lose. Third, protein costs your body energy just to digest it, so you burn a little more simply by eating it. That's a huge win. 300 calories, for example, of chicken breast and 300 calories of a banana are not the same physiological event inside your body. One is going to leave you steady and full, and it will— you probably won't need to eat for hours. The other is going to spike your blood sugar and it leaves you hungry again within the hour. So I hate when people say it's just about calories in and calories out. The type of calorie that you consume impacts your hormones in your body, and your hormones are what tells your cells to either burn fat for fuel or store the calories as fat. Let's dive into the groceries, and these are the groceries that are going to tell your body to burn fat for fuel and not store it. Now, the reason why this matters so much when the goal is rapid weight loss specifically is because when your body loses weight quickly without enough protein, your body does not just burn fat, it pulls from your muscle too. In this situation, because muscle— I want you to think of muscle as metabolically expensive. And when your body is stressed and when it is underfed, it's happy to let this expensive muscle go, right? It doesn't want to maintain it. Now, the problem is that muscle is your metabolic engine. It's where you burn fuel even when you are resting. So every pound of muscle that you lose makes your metabolism a little bit slower and the regain a little bit easier, which is the exact trap so many fast diets just spring on people. Protein is how you step around that trap entirely. You can lose weight at a really brisk, motivating pace and still wake up each morning with that really important muscle that keeps your metabolism strong, and you can keep that weight off for good. So let's talk about the specific groceries to help you do this. All right, number 1 are eggs. Eggs are as close to a perfect protein as you're gonna get. And I really like eggs because they're like nature's multivitamin. The yolk is really important because it contains all the vitamins and minerals. It, it contains choline, which is important for your eyes. The white is what has the protein in it. They carry the full set of amino acids that your body uses to build and hold muscle, and it does so in the most usable form available. And they bring that healthy fat and that choline, like I mentioned, along with them. 2 or 3 scrambled eggs. I would also, to get adequate protein, probably put some sliced chicken in there, maybe some ground beef, maybe some veggies, is a really, really great savory blood sugar-friendly way to open your day. You're not going to fear the yolk anymore. That's where much of the nutrition lives. So eat the whole egg. Grocery number 2: plain full-fat Greek yogurt. If you really don't like full fat, you want a little less fat in there, you could go low fat, but I do not encourage you to consume nonfat yogurt. You want some of the fat in there. I like Greek yogurt because it is strained. And that's why it carries nearly twice the protein of regular yogurt. It's rich in casein, which is a slow-digesting protein that feeds your muscles gradually, and it makes a really, really great afternoon snack. You can buy it plain. Remember that vanilla is still a flavor, and the reason why I mentioned plain is because those, uh, vanilla-flavored, fruit-flavored fruit on the bottom have just as much sugar as like a Häagen-Dazs ice cream. So you don't want to do that. Instead, you're going to get the plain low-fat or, uh, full-fat varieties, and then you can put berries, nuts and seeds, your own honey, maybe some flavored stevia drops in there and create your own flavor that way and be more in charge of the lower sugar content. Now, if watching this is making you realize how much muscle your past diets may have cost you That is exactly the problem that we solve at PhD Weight Loss. We build you a customized meal plan that drops fat at a steady, sustainable state while protecting your muscle that keeps your metabolism alive. And we adjust this as your body changes. If you are ready for a real plan instead of just another crash diet, I really urge you to check out myphdweightloss.com. You can also head over into the description, click the link, And the first step is going to be to schedule a call with one of our nutritionists, and we will figure out what the exact right path is for you. So again, that is myphdweightloss.com. Number 3 is wild-caught salmon. Salmon gives you a really great complete protein, and it's just as importantly high in omega-3 fatty acids, which help to calm the chronic inflammation that quietly blocks fat loss for a lot of people. Now, a piece of salmon over some greens with some olive oil on top, it is like one of the most metabolically friendly meals that you can eat. You can do fresh or frozen or canned, really all forms of salmon are really great, and you don't want to overlook how those omega-3s really help your body in the background. Now remember that inflammation is the root of all disease. I talk about inflammation a lot. It is the number one hidden reason that a person can do everything right and still feel really stuck, and salmon and these other foods that are anti-inflammatory, by the way, which encompass all of these groceries that I'm giving you today, is just one of the most enjoyable ways that you can help to reduce inflammation. Another great source of omega-3s, sardines. Most people like salmon more than sardines, but I actually have a really great guide on how to make up and cook up sardines in tasty ways. So if you think, oh my gosh, I want to include more omega-3s, I know my brain and my body need it, just head over into the description. I'll make sure to include the link to the little guide that provides you with some recipes for making sardines much more tasty. And number 4 are sardines. Sardines are the unsung hero on this list. Ounce for ounce, they're uniquely high in protein. They're loaded with omega-3s. They bring in calcium to you, especially if you eat the sardines with the bones. They have vitamin D. They're shelf-stable in your pantry. I've got, uh, probably 5 cans in my pantry right now, and if I'm in a bind or when I remember, I will put them on a plate. I'll squeeze a little bit of lemon, olive oil on top of those. So if you're like, oh my gosh, I don't know, sardines kind of give me the ick, I'm right there with you. But I have a really great guide that will provide you with some ways I cook up sardines to make them pretty darn tasty. So I'll make sure to include that free guide for you in the description. There's going to be a link in there for you, so check that out. Number 4, sardines. Number 5, grass-fed beef. Now I say grass-fed if your budget allows. If your budget doesn't allow grass-fed, that's okay. Still get beef because it delivers really dense complete protein. It gives you iron, B12, zinc, creatine, nutrients that support your energy, your blood, your muscle. Now you don't even have to choose the leanest cut. You don't need to fear the marbling. A steak with a little fat on it actually keeps you full. It keeps you satisfied, and it's exactly what keeps you out of the pantry eating the popcorn and the pretzels later on. Now, protein is your foundation. That's what we're talking about today. And for clients who want extra help staying full and holding on to muscle while they drop weight quickly, I created a supplement and it is amazing. It's called GlucoCut Plus. It is designed to support your natural GLP-1 fullness signals. It really, really helps to stabilize your blood sugar. It helps to reduce cravings, and it's very beneficial to help your body hold on to the lean muscle that you are wanting to protect as you drop weight. I actually have some bodybuilders who love this supplement because it helps them to maintain their muscle as they are trying to cut. You can find it at DrAshleyLucas.com. There is a link over in the description, and use code ASHLEY10 to get a special discount. Number 6 is chicken and turkey. You know, poultry is great because it provides you a really lean source of protein. It's affordable, it's versatile, you can put it in almost anything, and it's one of the highest protein per dollar foods that you can buy. You can do chicken thighs, chicken breasts, ground turkey, turkey breast. They're all going to give you a really good dose of protein, and you can build it in 100 different ways. Now, I put it down here near the bottom and not at the top because poultry has higher levels of omega-6s in it. Like, it's a little bit of a dirtier protein. Now, it's, it's totally fine, but us as humans, we've been found that we operate best really off of red meat like beef and lamb and bison, even venison if you hunt and like that. So the more you can incorporate those types of protein, if we really want to rank them, I put those at the top and then I put chicken and turkey closer to the bottom. So still decent, but if you really, really want to optimize, consider that. Number 7 is cottage cheese. People always ask me about cottage cheese and it is a favorite for a lot of people. I think it is because it is, you know, creamy. You can put stuff on it. It's kind of like Greek yogurt. It's rich in slow-digesting casein, which makes it a really good choice if you do need a snack after dinner to kind of feed your muscles overnight. I would encourage you, just like with yogurt, to choose either full-fat or low-fat. I really actually like to top my cottage cheese, if I eat it, with salt and pepper. But you can also do the sweet route with like berries and nuts and seeds or something. It's pretty simple. It's more on the inexpensive of the list, and it's really uniquely high in all of the amino acids and components that you need to support your muscle. Now I want you to notice what each of these 7 foods have in common. Not one of them asks you to be hungry, and that is the whole point, right? The reason why rapid weight loss usually feels miserable is that most fast diets are built on restriction and willpower, and willpower runs out. Even if you're taking a medication that doesn't make you hungry, we still want to provide the body with the fuel that's going to support your muscle. These foods specifically do exactly that. They fill you up, they steady your blood sugar, they quiet the food noise naturally that makes dieting feel like a fight for a lot of people. So when you really are full and satisfied from the healthy foods that your body acknowledges, right? When you give your body certain foods, it's going to be able to acknowledge that you've been fed and it's going to feel full. I want to give you an example here of what I'm saying because this could be confusing. I'm going to use, uh, Quest Bars as an example. Quest Bars are one of my— I'm not going to say my favorite protein bar, but it's higher on the list just because it's going to provide you whey protein. I like whey protein, it's bioavailable, it gives you about 20 grams of protein per bar. I don't love that it's super processed. I don't love a lot of the ingredients in it. So it's like, it's like an okay bar for me when I recommend a protein bar. And not everyone's the same in their likes and dislikes, so I, I provide a good variety of bars, bar options. But if you were to eat a Quest Bar versus a steak and have the same amount of protein in each, 20 grams of Quest Bar versus 20 grams of steak, your body and your brain are going to be able to acknowledge the steak protein better than the protein bar. And you could do this as an experiment. I often use my husband as an experiment because he just has the ability to keep eating and eating. Like, he, he can overeat anything. He has that skill set. And if I were to give him 20 grams of protein in a steak, he'd still want more, but he would feel much more full from the actual real food, right? It has real vitamins and minerals, and we were— are meant eat that food as a human species versus like a very processed Quest Bar. He could eat 6 of those. When you can give it real food that the body was meant to consume, it acknowledges that you've been fed and you will be full and satisfied naturally. Eating less stops being something that you have to force, and it can start being something that happens naturally, right? It's what makes fat loss sustainable instead of something that you have to recover from and worry about maintaining. So here's what I want you to do. Put at least one of these 7 groceries at the center of every meal, and I want you to aim to make it the first thing you reach for on the plate. So you have to eat that first. That means you're going to lead with protein and you're going to build the rest of the meal around it. And I want you to watch what happens to your hunger and your energy over the next 2 weeks. You're going to lose fat at a satisfying pace, but more importantly, you are going to keep muscle that makes that loss last. Last, last for good. Now, one more layer that takes this from good to powerful: pay attention to timing. I always say that there are 4 macronutrients. There is protein, carbs, fat, and meal timing. Anchor a real serving of protein at your first meal of the day and again at the last, because the first dose stabilizes your blood sugar for hours to follow and it helps with muscle synthesis. And that last dose does exactly the same while you sleep. And then you're going to spread the rest of your protein across your lunch and in your afternoon snack. You don't need to count anything. You don't need to weigh anything right now. You're just gonna make protein the non-negotiable center of every meal and snack, and you're gonna let the rest of the plate support it, right? That single shift does far more for fast-lasting fat loss than almost anything else that I could hand you. One quick real-life scenario: let's say you're going out to dinner and you have an option of eggplant parmesan or chicken Parmesan. Which one are you going to order? Drop in the comments which one you're going to order. You're not fragile, you're not broken. You have simply been underfed in one of the main nutrients that your body needs the most. When you feed it well, when you are able to look at like these menu items, one that I just mentioned as this test, and be able to pick the one that supports your body, you are going to start winning. And it will work with you. Your body will work with you rather than against you. Now, if you want to know exactly how to eat all this protein across a full day, watch my video right here on what I would do to drop 20 pounds in 60 days. In this video, I lay out the timing meal by meal. And if this video was helpful, subscribe so that the next video finds you. I'll see you there.
