Ages 55 to 65: If You Can Do These 4 Things, You're in Peak Health

In this solo, podcast‑style YouTube episode Dr. Ashley Lucas (PhD in sports nutrition, registered dietitian, founder of PhD Weight Loss) addresses adults aged 55‑65, reframing this decade as a powerful growth window rather than a period of inevitable decline. She argues that fear‑based messaging is counterproductive and introduces four concrete health checkpoints that, if met, place listeners in "peak health" for the next ten years. 1. Build and hold onto muscle – muscle is described as a "longevity organ" that fuels metabolism, stabilizes blood sugar, and preserves independence. Dr. Lucas recommends sufficient high‑quality protein at the first and last meals and regular resistance training (lifting heavy) to stimulate muscle growth, emphasizing that muscle can be built at any age. 2. Achieve metabolic flexibility / stable blood sugar – the ability to switch between carbs and fat for fuel. She advises protein‑forward meals, vegetables/fiber before carbs, and a short post‑meal walk to pull glucose into muscles, aiming for 3‑4 hour intervals between meals without shakiness or mood swings. 3. Regulate stress and sleep – chronic stress hormones hinder weight loss and promote belly fat storage. Listeners are prompted to assess sleep onset, continuity, and feeling rested, and to incorporate intentional recovery windows (10‑15 min breaks, screen‑free time before bed) to lower cortisol. 4. Move daily and support gut health – a brisk 30‑minute walk each day improves fat oxidation, blood sugar, mood, and sleep. Gut health is linked to metabolic signaling via the gut‑brain axis and natural GLP‑1 production. Dr. Lucas recommends diverse fiber, fermented foods, and a safe, rested gut environment. She also promotes her GLP‑1 Gut Longevity Plus supplement, which combines a next‑generation probiotic (Akkermansia), polyphenols, resveratrol, grape seed extract, and eriomin to boost endogenous GLP‑1. Throughout, Dr. Lucas intersperses personal anecdotes, calls to action (subscribe, review, comment), and promotional messages for her Dr. Ashley Wellness products and PhD Weight Loss services. The overarching message is that each checkpoint is attainable at any age, and the 55‑65 window is uniquely responsive to positive inputs.

Hi and welcome back. I'm so glad that you're here with me today. You know, whether you're out on a walk, maybe you're driving somewhere, folding a basket of laundry while you listen. I just, I wanna take some time today to talk to you about a decade of life that almost nobody prepares you for. Honestly, these are the years between 55 and 65, and I wanna start by saying something because I think a lot of people in this season need to hear it. If your body feels different than it used to, if the weight settles in places it never did before, if you feel like the rules changed on you without any warning, you are not imagining it and you are not falling apart. Something real is happening to your body. But here's what I want you to know before we go one step further. This decade is not the beginning of a decline. It might feel like it, but it's not. It is actually one of the most powerful windows you will ever have because the right inputs in these years compound in a way they never did before when you were younger. So much of the messaging aimed at people in this age group is built on fear. Fear of frailty, fear of disease, fear of, fear of running out of time. And fear is exactly the wrong fuel because fear raises the very stress hormones that work against your health. So we're not going to do that today. Instead, I want to give you 4 simple, honest checkpoints. If you can do these 4 things, you're going to be in peak health for this decade. And if you can't do them all yet, every single one of them can be built starting now at any age. Now, if we've not met before, I'm Dr. Ashley Lucas. I have a PhD in sports nutrition and chronic disease. I'm a registered dietitian and I'm the founder of PhD Weight Loss, where to date we have helped over 13,000 people collectively drop more than 480,000 pounds, many of them in exactly this stage of life. So let's walk through the 4 things together. Now, I want to frame these 4 things in the right way before we begin. I'm not going to hand you a checklist to feel behind on. I want you to instead think of these 4 things as kind of a conversation that you're going to have with your body. 4 honest questions you can ask it, and whatever the answers are today, they're just simply your starting point. So think of them as your starting point. Point. Now, I've watched people in their 60s and 70s and beyond rebuild every one of these things, and I have watched the way it changes not just their weight but the way they move through their days, the confidence they carry, the future they let themselves imagine.
What if the reason weight loss feels so hard is because something's missing? I'm Dr. Ashley Lucas, founder of PhD Weight Loss, and After years in the clinic, I saw the same pattern. People lost weight but felt drained, shaky, or burnt out. That's the gap Dr. Ashley Wellness was built to fill. So let's ask the questions together gently and see where you stand.
Okay.
Number 1, can you build and hold onto muscle? This is the first one, and honestly, it could be the most important one because muscle, and I've shared this with you in many videos, muscle is the closest thing we have to a longevity organ. It is your metabolic currency. People who have more muscle live longer and they have a higher quality of life. After about 40 years old, your primary goal should be to support your muscle mass. After about 50, the body begins to let go of muscle much more easily, and most people lose it quietly year after year without really noticing until something feels harder than it used to. Like, uh, maybe just walking up the stairs. You're like, oh my gosh, you're used to taking the elevator, you take the stairs for once and it's been a while, and you think, oh my gosh, this used to not be this hard. Now, the reason why muscle matters so much is that muscle is where you burn fuel. This is one of the reasons. It's also where you stabilize your blood sugar. It's where strength and independence live, which is really important as you continue to age. Now, here is one checkpoint. Can you get up off the floor without using your hands? Can you carry your own groceries? Like I just said, can you climb a flight of stairs and still hold a conversation? If your answer to these questions are not a confident yes, I don't want you to hear shame in that. Instead, I want you to hear possibility. Now, the, the, the really positive thing about this is that muscle responds at every single age. Two things that built it are simple. You eat enough high-quality protein, right? We've talked about this a lot. Your protein needs to be anchored at your first meal and your last meal of the day. And number two, you lift something heavy a few times a week. Those are the two things. You need to eat correctly, and then you need to overload the muscle so it can use the fuel you're giving it. Now, I see men and women, but especially women, drift toward the elliptical and the treadmill and avoid the weights. I was at Disneyland like 2 years ago. I remember this specifically, and my husband and I walked into the gym wanting to get a workout in before we took the kids to the park. And there were about 7 people in this little gym, and there were 4 women, and they were all on the elliptical machines and the treadmill, and the men were lifting the weights. I don't know why as women we do this. And if you're listening to this or watching this, I want you to drop in the comments below, are you one that tend to, uh, go toward the treadmill, the spin bike, the elliptical machine, just try to burn calories. If this is you, totally fine. I want you to be aware of it and listen to what I'm going to, uh, tell you right now, which is very lovingly, I want you to get off of these machines and go pick up something heavy. Your future self, the one who moves through, uh, their 70s and 80s with ease, is built right now with lifting something heavy. All right, second question: is your body running on stable blood sugar? This second checkpoint is metabolic flexibility, which is really just your body's ability to switch smoothly between burning carbs and burning fat for fuel. And this is really what we focus on at PhD Weight Loss, is increasing metabolic flexibility. Most people in the world have quietly lost this ability because of what we've been told to eat. And you can feel when it's gone. And sometimes it's been gone for so long you have no idea what I'm talking about right now. But when we get you more metabolically flexible, you're going to be like, oh my gosh, this feels totally different. My body feels like it's running on a different fuel source. Now, when you do not have metabolic flexibility, it shows up as the energy crash in the middle of the afternoon. It shows up as cravings that feel impossible to ignore. It's the way you get shaky or irritable if a meal runs late. Now, here's your checkpoint with this one. Can you go 3 or 4 hours between meals and feel steady, clear, and calm without your hands shaking, without your mood dropping? If you can't, this is really, really beautiful information. It doesn't mean that you failed. Failed. It just tells you that your blood sugar is on a roller coaster, and that roller coaster drives both how you feel and it drives how your body stores fat, right? Now, the repair of this one is gentle and it works really quickly. What you want to do is you want to build your meals around protein. We talk about that a lot— healthy, high-quality protein, which usually comes from animal protein. You are going to want to eat for most people, some vegetables and fiber before you eat a lot of carbs. So what this means is your meals are going to be protein forward. They're going to have some veggies in there, some healthy fats, and then if you want a carb, you're going to eat it after you eat that, that, that part of your plate. And then you're going to take a short walk after you eat, even just 10 minutes, because that walk, what it does is it pulls the sugar out of your blood from your meal and into your muscles where it belongs to prevent the crash. Now, blood Sugar steadiness is something that you rebuild, you guys, one meal at a time, and it's totally possible and you can do it quickly. Now, if you are listening to this and realizing that your body has been stuck in that roller coaster for a really, really, really, really long time, that's exactly the work that we do every day inside PhD Weight Loss. We don't hand people a generic diet and just walk away. Now, we build a customized plan around your body, your health, history, your desires, your likes, your dislikes, and we adjust it as you change because this stage of life deserves a plan made just for it. Now, if you would ever like that kind of support, I would encourage you to come find us at myphdweightloss.com. You can go over into the description here on YouTube, but also navigate to myphdweightloss.com, and we would love to help you. All right, number 3, third question. Can you regulate your stress and your sleep? This third thing is one of the most important, and for some reason is what everyone underestimates. It's one that I find hides behind a stalled result more than any other. If someone who's working with us at PhD Weight Loss they're eating right on point and their weight is not dropping for some reason, I know it's either gonna be with sleep or with stress, right? Usually they're doing everything right and they're still not seeing change. 9 times out of 10, the answer is not the food. So the questions there that come to me that I generally ask is, is the reason why their weight loss is stalled is because they're living in a high-stress state that they've stopped even noticing? Or maybe they're not sleeping well. Their body has quietly decided that it's not safe enough to let go of weight. You know, your nervous system runs the show. When stress hormones stay chronically high, your body holds on to fat, especially around the belly area, because on a biological level, it believes it is in this survival mode. It feels like it's not safe. It feels like it needs to hold on to energy depots. And our body thinks like, okay, I'm going to hold. Onto this fat in the belly because it's going to provide me quick energy when I need it because I'm not safe. So guys, here with this question, your checkpoint is: do you fall asleep with reasonable ease? Do you stay asleep? Do you wake up feeling like you've actually recovered? And across an ordinary day, do you have moments where your body truly downshifts and rests? Like where you feel your nervous system relaxes. Now, if you don't have this, this isn't a flaw in you, and I am right there with you. Like, I really have to intentionally take a pause during the day and just take a deep breath. And for me, it's walking outside and taking my shoes off and standing on the ground. If you don't have this ability in your body yet, or you don't have the time or space in your life for it, This is a signal. The work here for you is to build small recovery windows into your day. So for me, for example, my day with meetings or recording content for you, doing all the things with the kids— oh my gosh, I have a tendency to slam as much as possible into the day, and I go back to back to back to back. So I know that what I have to be very intentional around is taking pauses through the day and like even 10 to 15 minute breaks. I also know that it's really important for me to protect my sleep and I will again have a tendency. So if you are like me, I feel you. It is the work is to protect sleep. So at 9 o'clock, I know for me if I work past 9 o'clock or I'm on my computer, I will have a struggle falling asleep. I really do need about a 1 to 2 hour gap where I'm not looking at a screen, where I'm not working. And if feel like your nervous system is on high, this is one thing that you really, really want to focus on. And stop treating rest as something that you earn only after everything else is done. You don't have to earn rest, right? You deserve rest, and your body actually needs it to keep pushing on. Remember that safety in your body is not a luxury. It is actually a requirement for your body to heal. So as a part of your healing journey, you are going to put breaks into your schedule, and you're going to make sure that you prioritize sleep. All right, question number 4: Can you move every day, and do you digest well? This fourth checkpoint brings together the two things that are quietly connected, right? Daily movement and gut health. Movement first. Let's talk about this. I'm not talking about punishing yourself. I'm not talking about feeling like you need to go work out to burn calories. I'm talking about, number 1, a brisk 30-minute walk every day. Walking improves your ability to burn fat without stressing your system. It steadies your blood sugar. It supports your mood and your sleep. So the checkpoint for this one is pretty simple. I want you to ask yourself, are you moving your body? Are you walking? Are you walking most days of the week for about 30 minutes? Now, someone that I love to follow, and he's given me so much great information, is Mark Sisson when it comes to metabolic flexibility, when it comes to overall health. And now he talks a lot about walking. He has a great book on the topic of the importance of walking, and he actually started a shoe company. It's called Peluva. I have no affiliation, but he is just a really, really great educator and researcher in the areas of just primal and healthy movement. I love it. So definitely check that out. And then I want to dive into the gut, which I believe is one of the most overlooked keys to aging well. The gut is where so much of your metabolic signaling begins. You know that your gut is connected to your brain with the gut-brain axis. You get signals to your brain that you've been fed, that you're full from your gut. Right. And do you know, and you probably do, that GLP-1 that hormone that Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, all these drugs are made out of actually is produced in your gut, in your small intestine, in your colon. Everyone's talking about these hormones, but you produce them naturally. Now, a healthy, diverse gut microbiome supports your digestion. It supports your weight. It supports your immune system, your mood, your metabolism. So I want you to ask yourself, does your digestion feel comfortable and regular? Or are you living with bloating and discomfort that you've just learned to tolerate, that you— it is your new uncomfortable normal? Feeding your gut well, feeding it with the fiber that your body seems to tolerate, feeding it with fermented foods, feeding it with rest and sleep, providing it with the care that it needs. And oftentimes the biggest thing that it needs is just feeling safe and giving it rest. It's one of the kindest long-term things and investments that you can make in this decade for your body. Now, on the note of the gut, as we age, it's really important we focus on it, and it is why I created a special supplement called GLP-1 Gut Longevity Plus. You can see I put all of it together. It combines a next-generation probiotic called Akkermansia with ingredients that support your body's own natural GLP-1 production. I also included polyphenols and a strong antioxidant like resveratrol and grapeseed extract. And I love this because it helps to create this strong gut barrier and environment to allow the, the bacteria like Akkermansia to increase GLP-1 production. I also included eriomin in it, which is a citrus bioflavonoid shown to increase natural GLP-1 production up to 37%. It is formulated for precisely this season of life when the gut and the metabolism just need a little extra support. So if that speaks to you, you can learn more and find a discount at DrAshleyLucas.com. Use code ASHLEY10. When you purchase that probiotic, that supplement. And I, I really believe that you're going to love it and you're going to find significant benefit to your gut and your overall health journey. Okay, you guys, as a reminder, can you build and hold muscle? Is your body running on stable and steady blood sugar? Can you regulate your stress and your sleep? And can you move daily and digest well? If you can do all 4, you're really in peak health for this decade, and I am thrilled about that. Really, it's huge. Now, if you can't do all 4 of these yet, I really hope that you can hear me clearly. Not one of these is closed to you. Not one of them. Every single one can be rebuilt, and it can be rebuilt quickly. And this decade is the perfect time to do it. Like, Starting today, you don't want to wait. You want to start today because the body in these years is far more responsive than the fear-based messaging would ever let you to believe. Your body's not betraying you. It's not too late. It's just been protecting you the whole entire time in the only way that it knew how, and it is so intelligent. Now, when you give it muscle, when you give it steadiness and rest and care, it stops the bracing and it can actually start thriving again. Now, these are not the years that your story winds down. With the right inputs, they can be some of the strongest, most clearest, most alive years you have ever, ever lived.
