Dr. Ashley Lucas breaks down a study of Biggest Loser season 8 contestants whose resting metabolism dropped 800 calories a day after the show and stayed suppressed six years later, even after they regained the weight. This helps explain why calorie counting alone fails for chronic dieters.

You really can shut down your metabolism. There was a study in 2016 that followed the Biggest Losers contestants from season eight. Specifically, they measured their resting metabolic rate. This is the number of calories they consume during the day, doing nothing. And then they measured again right after the show, and they noticed that their metabolic rate dropped by about 800 calories a day. Now, that's a lot. You would think that over time, especially if they regain the weight, their resting metabolic rate rate would jump back up to where it was before the show. Well, they looked at their metabolic rate six years after the show, and their metabolic rate was still depressed by that much. That's why a simple calories in and calories out diet is not going to be the answer to drop weight loss for a lot of people, especially for a lot of people who have chronically dieted in their past.
