Daily Health Update for August 16 2021 by Toronto Chiropractor Dr. David Koivuranta in Davisville.

Dr. David Koivuranta covers six health findings: early MS symptoms like urinary issues and dizziness often go missed, a Western diet high in fat and sugar triggers gut changes that worsen skin and joint inflammation, dumbbell training builds muscle and bone density, myofascial release reduces low-back pain disability, and sensory perception differs in people with anorexia or depression.

Hello everyone, it's Dr. Dave. Hopefully you're all doing well, you enjoyed your weekend. Looking forward to a good week today towards the end of August. Coming at you on behalf of the Toronto Neck and Back Pain Clinic with your daily health update for Monday, August 16th, 2021. Gonna look at 6 areas of health and wellness news and information. Somewhere around this video you can read through all 6 of those areas. If you'd like a copy or you have any questions, you can DM us on social, give us a call here at the clinic, and/or send us an email. We'd be happy to help you out. Not going to treat, diagnose, prevent, or cure cure any illness or disease with our time together today. However, we'll get your week started right with you focused on some health and wellness news and information so that you can continue to make some good choices and actions when it comes to your own health and wellness. And we rinse and repeat that Monday through Friday to support you in that process, to help create those great experiences you'd like to live through that healthy body of yours. All right, the Journal of Neurology, June 2021, looked at the early signs of multiple sclerosis which are often missed. Researchers examined the insurance records of nearly 200 thousand adults and found that those eventually diagnosed with multiple sclerosis were more likely to make doctor visits for issues such as urinary problems, visual disturbances, abnormal skin sensations, impaired movement, and dizziness in the time preceding their diagnosis. Recognizing these clusters of symptoms could help doctors identify patients who may be at increased risk for MS earlier in the course of the disease, when treatment may be more effective. So perhaps the idea here is, whether it's multiple sclerosis or something else, when you feel your body may not be doing what it used to do, may not be feeling the way it used to feel, or the way that you like, or it's letting you know something, then that's probably a good time to seek out some care and be relentless in the pursuit of why your body may not be feeling the way that it used to or the way that you would like it, so that you can be sure you are on top of any possible things that might be happening. Early intervention is always good when it comes to detecting some of these conditions that may be challenges for us during our journey in life, right? The Journal of Investigative Dermatology, June 2021, looked at our Western diet and how it may be linked to skin and joint inflammation. New research suggests that the high-fat, high-sugar Western diet can negatively affect the population of bacteria in the gut, contributing to skin and joint inflammation. Symptoms such as psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. On the other hand, switching to a healthier diet pattern may help to reduce these issues. And of course, if you suffer from one or more of those things, getting in touch with someone who could help you with your nutritional choices, such as a holistic nutritionist, maybe a naturopath, and/or someone along those lines, it would be a good idea. The American Council on Exercise, July 2021, looked at dumbbells, uh, the benefits of using dumbbells for exercise. That is, American Council on Exercise Dr. David Koivuranta notes that incorporating dumbbells into your workout can offer the following benefits: it promotes muscle growth, improves cardiovascular health, aids in weight loss, leads to greater muscle activation, improves muscle endurance, benefits contractile and elastic components of your muscle tissues, and helps maintain bone health. So a little bit of resistance into your routine, uh, inexpensively you can get some dumbbells and even use them at home. Many different exercises, and these days of course you have options on YouTube to show you how to use those dumbbells, uh, properly. Properly. But of course, working with a personal trainer a few times could also help set up something that's more customized, individualized, and personalized to you. Never a waste of time or money. The American Journal of Psychiatry looked at people with anorexia or depression and how they may feel things differently. You may want to look up that, uh, study on the Daily Health Update. And, you know, 1,200 participants in that one, and you can see what they came up with. And if you'd like to learn how to prevent nail fungus, you can also check that out on the Daily Health Update. It's something that plagues many people. Sometimes we don't notice or realize that we have it, or we don't think it's a big issue, but it can be a health complicating factor for sure. So good to get on top of that. Finally, Complementary Therapies in Medicine, June 2021, looked at myofascial release and how it offers benefits to those with back pain. Myofascial release is a hands-on technique that involves applying gentle, sustained pressure to myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain pain and restore motion. A recent meta-analysis concluded that myofascial release offers significant benefit for reducing disability in patients with low back pain. This form of treatment is often used in combination with other manual therapies and specific exercises in the management of low back pain and other musculoskeletal conditions. Usually back pain and neck pain, maybe some other joint problems as well, can benefit from a myriad of approaches. Usually combination therapy works better than any single therapy alone. Of course, that depends again, what the person brings to the table, the nature of the condition, the extent of any accident or injury, or how long the problem has been there, etc. But what it means is don't give up. There's usually an option or combination of options when you put them together that will get you some benefit and improvement so you can feel better and be more able to do what you need and want to do every day. Just don't give up. Seek out as much help as you can, and you can and will be better. All right, so that's your daily health update for Monday. Hope you enjoy your week, get it off started well if you haven't already, and then we'll catch up with you tomorrow, Tuesday, with your next daily health update. It'll be a pleasure to see you then. Take care.
