In this video Dr. Dave (Dr. David Koivuranta) delivers a daily health update on behalf of the Toronto Neck and Back Pain Clinic. He reviews six recent research findings and offers practical health advice. 1) A BMC Oral Health study links poor oral health and extensive tooth loss to a 2‑4× higher risk of frailty in older Mexican adults, prompting a recommendation for good dental hygiene, nutrition, and regular dental visits. 2) A Frontiers in Cell and Development Biology animal study suggests higher maternal omega‑3 intake during pregnancy may lower offspring lifetime breast‑cancer risk, highlighting the importance of a nutritious diet for expectant mothers. 3) An Orthopedic Surgery review of 20 studies finds exercise, especially weight‑bearing activity, can be as effective as conventional therapy for reducing pain and improving lumbar and femoral bone mineral density in osteoporosis patients, reinforcing Wolff’s Law. 4) A Psychiatry Research survey of ~3,000 university students reports a 5% prevalence of internet gaming disorder, associated with fatigue, depression, and social anxiety, urging moderation of gaming. 5) A Sleep journal survey of 500 mothers shows that establishing bedtime routines early in a child’s life reduces sleep problems at 18‑24 months, with personal anecdote supporting the benefit of consistent sleep habits. 6) A European Review of Aging and Physical Activity review of 13 studies finds older adults with low back pain have poorer balance, increasing fall risk; the presenter recommends balance‑focused exercises and community programs. Dr. Dave invites viewers to request written summaries via DM, email, or phone, and closes with encouragement to make daily health‑focused decisions.

I'm going to look at 6 areas of health and wellness news and information. Somewhere around this video you can read through all 6 areas if you would like a copy. You can DM us on social, send us email, an email, or give us a call. We'd be happy to help you out and get one of those to you. And or if you have any questions, always happy to hear from you. However, we may just educate you, inform you, and maybe even entertain you a little bit when it comes to some options with your health and wellness, or just some interesting facts about how the body works and some things that they're discovering about how it works that might just encourage you to keep taking good care of yourself and or those around you. Regardless, it's, uh, time and, uh, effort well spent for being here. So thanks for joining us. BMC Oral Health, July 2021, looked at poor oral health and, uh, its link to frailty using data from the Cohort of Obesity, Sarcopenia, and Frailty of Older Mexican Adults, the study. Researchers report that older adults with total or near total tooth loss or poor oral health were 2 to 4 times more likely to be characterized as frail over the following year. So take good care of those teeth and/or live a lifestyle that helps support the health of your teeth also from the inside out, right? Good diet and nutrition. And go see your dentist and hygienist on a regular preventive schedule if you can. Frontiers in Cell and Development Biology, June 2021, looked at in utero omega-3 intake and how it can reduce future breast cancer risk. An animal study found that a higher maternal intake of omega-3 fatty acids during pregnancy was associated with a lower lifetime risk for breast cancer in their offspring. Researchers, uh, write— the researchers wrote that the issue of parental diet and intergenerational transmission has become an important field of research. However, the mode of action often remains partially elusive. These results have the potential to promote the design of simple changes in diet which would allow for reduced onset of various types of cancer, not only for the individuals using that diet but also for their offspring. So can you imagine that what you're eating while you're bringing this wonderful creation into the world actually has an impact on the future health and wealth. Not, not only the immediate health and wellness or the soon-to-be health and wellness of them as an infant, child, or toddler, youth, but for the rest of their life and later on. So it bodes well to take good care of yourself at all stages of life because just imagine the ramifications for yourself in real time when they can have this impact generationally. All right, so keep eating well if you can. Orthopedic Surgery, June 2021, looked at exercise and how it plays a role in addressing osteoporosis. An analysis of data from 20 studies found evidence that exercise may be as effective as conventional therapy for reducing pain and improving bone mineral density in the lumbar spine and femoral head in osteoporosis patients. Further high-quality studies are recommended before changes to treatment guidelines can be advised. But exercise, probably a good idea. There's a rule with the body called Wolff's Law, and your bone will increase its density or pull the nutrients that it requires to increase its density into the bone when it's stressed to a healthy degree. But if there's no stress or challenge to that bone, it's less likely to increase its density. So exercise, especially weight-bearing exercise, is particularly good for the health of our bones. Psychiatry Research, July 2020, looked at internet gaming disorders and how prevalent they are among college students. Phone interviews with nearly 3,000 university students revealed that about 1 in 20 had an internet gaming disorder, which can interfere with their schoolwork and social activities and has been linked to a higher risk of feeling unrested when waking, being fatigued, feeling depressed, and experiencing social anxiety. Of course, gaming, uh, can be a good —fun activity, stress release, and something to enjoy. However, we want to be cautious that it doesn't cross the line from something that's healthy and fun to something that interferes with our health and wellness and our ability to do the things that we really ultimately probably need and want to do every day. Sleep, June 2021, talks about good bedtime routines early in life that help improve sleep habits for toddlers. A survey of 500 mothers at various points in the first 2 years of their child's life revealed that the earlier a bedtime routine is established, the fewer sleeping problems their son or daughter would have at 18 to 24 months. Although that sounds wonderful, it may not always be that easy. I have limited experience having only 2 children that my wife brought into this world, and she was very good about establishing an early bedtime which had stuck with them through, definitely into their teen years even, and have always slept well and been good sleepers and had no problem going to bed early. And they were also early risers, which helped them get ready for the day. So certainly seen the benefits of establishing that good bedtime routine in our family, but I have an inkling that it's not always that easy. So I'm thankful and blessed that we had that experience. But if it's possible to do, you do want to keep in mind that the research in literature does promote trying to establish that routine. And of course, as adults, that choice that we have for ourselves is to establish a healthy routine as well. And then finally, European Review of Aging and Physical Activity, June 2021, looked at low back pain and balance in elderly people. A review of data from 13 published studies concluded that older adults with low back pain often exhibit worse balance than their peers without a history of back pain. Because impaired balance increases the risk for serious falls, which can dramatically affect the quality of life independence of seniors, the research team notes that more attention should be paid to Balance control in elderly patients with low back pain. There are many manual therapists that often recommend at-home exercises to improve balance in patients with back pain when warranted. And of course, there are also many community and other, uh, private, uh, run programs that help focus on strength, stability, flexibility, mobility for people at various stages of life. And it would be good to tap into that program so that we maintain function for as long as we possibly can in life and help foster independence as well as safety when we want to navigate the world for as long as possible, right? All right, so that's your daily health update for Wednesday, middle of the week, and we'll be back tomorrow with another one for you heading into your Thursday, written format for you Friday to send you into another summer weekend. Hopefully you're looking forward to it. Take care, be well, and make some good decisions.
