In this 10‑minute daily health update, Dr. David Koivuranta of the Toronto Neck and Back Pain Clinic presents six concise wellness insights drawn from recent research. He begins with a friendly greeting and invites viewers to request a written copy of the notes. The six topics are: (1) teenage vaping raises the risk of asthma and asthma attacks, citing the American Lung Association and a Canadian Community Health Survey analysis; (2) watching television during family dinners is associated with higher rates of overweight and obesity in children, based on a BMC Public Health survey; (3) 20 minutes of high‑intensity interval training (HIIT) per week produces fitness improvements comparable to the standard 150 minutes of moderate‑intensity exercise, according to a Journal of Physiology study; (4) 23 % of heart‑failure patients develop depression or anxiety within five years, as reported in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology; (5) a pilot study in Molecules shows that vitamin D can be measured longitudinally from hair samples using liquid‑chromatography mass spectrometry, offering a broader picture than a single blood test; and (6) seniors with spinal disability favor a combination of chiropractic manipulation and home‑based exercise, improving pain, disability, and daily function, per Arthritis Care & Research. For each point Dr. Koivuranta offers practical take‑aways and encourages viewers to seek professional help when needed. He closes by wishing a healthy remainder of the week and promising another update tomorrow.

Therefore, time, effort, well spent. So congrats for being here. If you or someone you know is vaping, especially if you or they are a teen, you should know that it increases the risk for asthma and asthma attacks according to the American Lung Association, May 2021. Contrary to the belief that vaping is a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes, a new study that reviewed data from the Canadian Community Health Survey revealed that teenage e-cigarette users are at an increased risk for asthma, and those with asthma were also more likely to have an asthma attack in the last year than than their asthmatic peers who do not vape. All right, keep those lungs healthy. BMC Public Health, June 2021, talks about dinnertime and it's important to keep the TV off, perhaps. A review of data collected during an online survey found that members of a family are more likely to be overweight or obese if they watch television during family dinners. You wanna stay focused on eating that great food, how it makes you feel, how yummy it is, and to see and take your time eating it so that you know that you're full maybe sooner than you would be if, when you are distracted watching television. So lots of positive reasons to not be eating always. Sometimes it's okay, but if all the meals are in front of the television, it may be a contributing factor to some health concerns. Looking at our activity component of the daily health update, the Journal of Physiology, April 2021, looks at short bursts of exercise that can help keep you fit. Of course, this is known as HIIT training— high interval intensity— high-intensity interval training, of course, is a form of exercise that involves short intervals of maximal effort, such as sprinting or stair climbing, separated by intervals of moderate-intensity exercise such as jogging or fast walking. A recent study concluded that performing 20 minutes of HIIT workouts each week yields fitness improvements that are comparable to those achieved with 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise each week. So good to add those harder bursts of effort into your weekly activity routine. All right, you'll benefit from it. Your body will be happy that you push it a little bit. The European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, May 2021, looks at 1 in 5 heart failure patients that end up having depression or anxiety after their heart challenge. An analysis of data concerning nearly 100,000 patients with heart failure revealed that 23% developed depression or anxiety during the following 5 years. While treatment for mental illness is common in cancer patients, these findings suggest that heart failure patients could benefit from such services as well. So if you or someone you know has had a health challenge, including heart failure or another diagnosis that can be impactful to their mental health and wellness, their overall mood or attitude, good to make sure, check in on them, that see that they're doing well, and maybe help them reach out for services that could see them through that challenging period with their health. It will help support a better outcome all around. We talk about vitamin D quite often on the Daily Health Update and getting your levels checked. The report from Molecules, May 2021, suggests that not just the blood levels of vitamin D, but hair samples could actually offer a more complete picture of vitamin D status. Traditionally, vitamin D levels are measured using a blood test, but according to a recent pilot study, with the aid of a technology called liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, scientists can now measure vitamin D levels from a single human hair. Additionally, vitamin D levels can be assessed at various points along the length of the hair, which can provide information on one's vitamin D levels over the course of several months. So an interesting use of technology there to check those vitamin D levels. Finally, Arthritis Care and Research, May 2021, looked at chiropractic care and home exercise being favored by those with spinal disability. Interviews with 50 seniors who receive chiropractic treatment for a spinal condition reveal that they view the combination of manual therapy like spinal manipulation and home-based exercises as effective for reducing spinal pain, reducing disability, and improving their ability to carry out activities of daily living. In fact, in the clinic when we see people, they quite often do have discomfort, soreness, aches and pains, maybe some stiffness, instability, lack of movement. Uh, but the big concern they have is how that impacts what they need and want to do every day. And that would be the same across the board regardless of age. They notice that it impacts, uh, their ability to carry out some fun things in their life and some things that they need to do, whether they're run or not, like work for example, or take care of themselves. So it's good to add in and make sure you get some manipulative therapy for those physical aches and pains because it can help improve the outcomes along with the self-care, which is very important. But adding them both together will just support an even better outcome for you and those around you if they need it. All right, that's your daily health update for Wednesday, middle of the week. Hope you enjoy the tail end of the week. Make it a healthy one. We'll be back tomorrow, and I'll look forward to sharing some info with you then. Take care.
