In this July 22, 2020 daily health update, Dr. David Koivuranta of the Toronto Neck and Back Pain Clinic shares three evidence‑based wellness tips. First, he highlights research showing that people who garden at home are more likely to meet daily fruit and vegetable recommendations and experience stress‑relief benefits, encouraging viewers of any living situation to grow produce in any space. Second, he discusses a June 2020 Cell Reports study where muscle biopsies from long‑term endurance athletes revealed altered expression of over 1,000 genes linked to reduced risk of obesity and type‑2 diabetes, emphasizing that consistent, moderate exercise can positively affect genetics via epigenetic mechanisms. Third, he cites a March 2020 Acta Rheumatologica Portuguesa paper indicating that shoulder pain is predicted not only by mechanical factors but also by metabolic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia, suggesting that nutrition and lifestyle improvements are essential components of shoulder‑pain treatment. Dr. Koivuranta concludes by directing viewers to the clinic’s website, Facebook page, and patient group for more updates and offers a daily email subscription.

Hey everyone, it's Dr. Dave. Hopefully you're all doing well, enjoying the middle of your week. Today is Wednesday, July 22nd, 2020. Coming at you on behalf of the Toronto Neck and Back Pain Clinic with your daily health update, designed to educate, empower, inform, and entertain you perhaps a little bit with some daily health and wellness information. Not designed to treat, diagnose, prevent, or cure any illness or disease. Be sure to talk to your healthcare provider before you make or take on any suggestions or ideas with improving your health and wellness to make sure it's customized, individualized, and personalized to you. So interestingly enough, based on the research and literature, home gardeners, people who have gardens at home, are more likely to reach their fruit and veggie intake for the day. So whether you're an urbanite, a suburbanite, or a country dweller, find some way to produce some fruits and vegetables, whether it's in your yard, on your patio, in a window box. It can be done, and it's a good stress buster too taking care of those plants, and plants are just good energy, good to have around. Um, exercise. This is really interesting. The science behind this is really cool, and it speaks to genetics and also epigenetics and how some of our cellular information might turn on and turn off, if you will, or how it expresses itself or whether or not it expresses itself. According to the journal Cell Reports, in June 2020, they did muscle biopsies of individuals with a 15+ year history of endurance exercise, and it revealed that there were changes in expression over— in over 1,000 genes in their genome, many of which had been observed to reduce the risk for metabolic disease. So chances of obesity and type 2 diabetes, for example, tied into that metabolic disease. So exercising regularly doesn't have to be intense, but if it's consistent over time, it will have an impact on your health and wellness, and right down to your genetics, which is kind of cool. So add that fitness, that exercise activity component to your lifestyle. The rewards will be there. There are some predictive factors for shoulder pain according to the Acta Rheumatologica Portuguesa journal, March 2020, and they're not just mechanical, just not with shoulder use or arm use or what you do day in and day out, or if you've had accidents and injuries. Some of it is actually tied into things like diabetes, arterial hypertension, and hyperlipidemia, so having higher levels of unhealthy or wrong fats in your body, having high blood pressure, some of these lifestyle factors actually predicted that those people, or more predictable that those people may have some shoulder problems. So the treatment for shoulder problems may include not just treatments for the mechanical component, 'cause there will be a tissue component, but also lifestyle factors. So improving things like your nutrition will help recover those kinds of musculoskeletal problems. Maybe not so, so unique or so amazing in terms of that kind of information. We probably always knew that that was the case, but the science backs it up. So just an interesting tidbit for you. All right. So those are a few aspects. Check out the rest. It's posted on the website, the Dr. David Koivuranta Facebook page. You'll see, and also in our Facebook group for our patients.
