Function...then fitness.

Dr. Dave explains why fixing how your body moves matters before you exercise. A dysfunctional segment can compensate and hide the problem, then get worse when you add strength work. Restore proper movement first, then build fitness on top.

Hello everyone, it's Dr. Dave. Hopefully you're all enjoying yourselves and getting ready to have a great day full of some positive experiences. A lot of times at the clinic people ask me about exercise and fitness, and as you can see, I'm a big believer in it. Have our own little fitness gym here right at home, and fitness is one of the things that supports the good function in our body along with food, nutrition, and supplementation. And a lot of times people ask me, "What exercise can I do, Dr. Dave, to fix my problem?" Or, "How can I fix my back or my neck or my knee?" And exercise can be a part of that, but one of the things that chiropractic does is it takes a step back and it asks itself, "Well, if you are moving around and that area is giving you a problem, how come it's not getting better?" And usually the answer to that is something is not sitting and moving right. So you can probably go exercise, and sometimes it even feels better with exercise,, but if that part's not participating, even though that exercise is fundamentally good for you, it may actually be causing more damage to that part and forcing your body to compensate and create other habits and patterns to accomplish that task. So I like to show people that with this red and white stick here. So if we have an area in your spine or in your body that's not sitting and moving right, and we go to do something, we can probably still do it. A lot of people point out when we show them the problem that they're having functionally, how, but doc, I can still bend, I can still move. That's fine because the other parts are probably allowing you to do that, but as you continue to do that, these problem parts are probably going to get worse. So what we'd like to do is take a step back and get those parts to participate in the movement as well. That way, when you go to exercise and do some healthy stuff, you're going to get more benefit because every part of your body is going to be able to participate. And when your body participates, you create a better experience every day in your life. Consider that next time you're going to work out or you're just strengthening and trying to improve something with fitness alone. It has a great place. I'm a big believer, but there's a step-by-step process and that fitness and that exercise, that strengthening and that stability has to come at the right time depending on what problems or conditions or things your body's trying to work with or deal with. Alright? So go out there and make sure you're doing things in a smart way. If you need any help, make sure you contact us. We'd be happy to help create those good experiences in your life.
