Home Prepared vs Fast Food

Dr. Dave shows his daughter's science experiment comparing homemade and fast food spoilage over time. The homemade potato and burger grew visible mold while the fast-food versions barely decayed, revealing how preservatives keep commercial food shelf-stable. He discusses what this means for health in a busy lifestyle.

Hello everyone, it's Dr. Dave. Hope you're all out there having a great experience in life. Just want to take a quick moment and share something with you that I thought was really interesting. My daughter had to do a science experiment for school and she thought she would recreate that story we've all heard about with home cooked or home prepared food versus food that you might buy in a fast food restaurant and which one might rot faster. So I'm going to steal her results just to show you from a real life experience. Now maybe someone out there has had a different experience, but certainly ours is what it is based on what we did with this experiment, or what she did and I'm stealing. I don't know how well we're going to be able to see this, but this is just a potato that was oven baked and cut in half, and it was left out in the open. We've put a lid on the jar since just to help preserve it, but that bottom potato is green and this one has some kind of spores. Spores or some kind of yellow dots and bumps on it, not looking so great. And yet, if we look at the French fries, we're not seeing very much, if any. There's a little bit of white silky stuff in there, but still relatively well preserved, which is kind of interesting. Then we took a burger at home and we cooked it up, and I don't know again how well we're going to be able to see it on the camera, but that Bottom burger there has some good mold on the bottom. You can see that kind of white, greeny patch right on there. Alright, so when we look at our commercially bought burger, we tried to find any kind of signs of change in the bun or the meat, and nowhere on that burger can we find anything that would, you know, scare us away from probably eating it. Next thing we did is we took just a glass of milk, and obviously there's some separation there between the clear fluids and the white part. Now it's been a while since I was a chemistry major back in undergrad, so I'd have to look up and see what is those two different parts, but clearly some separation. However, when we take a look at the milkshake, commercially bought, we can see that the separation is a little bit different, and there's almost like an an oily kind of residue that's hanging in there, which is very interesting. But a neat thing I thought were definitely the potato and the burger. So these are the kinds of choices we make every day, and then we wonder how we end up in situations where maybe we're falling behind with our health. Now I'm not saying once in a while you can't go out and enjoy a fast food burger. It's all about moderation and variety. But for those people who are living in the North American lifestyle, They're very busy, their days are long, and they have to go out and grab what they're going to eat. Those are the choices that we have to be cautious with every day because we want to make sure we're choosing things that our body can actually break down and use and that haven't been prepared in a way where they need to survive an environment in order to get to you in a safe kind of way. Two different, totally different kinds of foods. Alright? So thanks for letting me share that with you today. I hope my daughter gets an A+ on that experiment. And I'll catch up with you all again later. Keep creating those good experiences for yourself every day. All the best.
