posture check

Dr. David Koivuranta shows how to check your posture using a three-way mirror. Align a string from your feet through your nose to check the front view, then position your ear over your shoulder at a 45-degree angle for the side view. Visual feedback helps your nervous system learn correct alignment faster.

Alright everybody, it's Dr. Dave. I'm going to show you how to check your posture in the 3-way mirror today. Alright, this is very important. Someone can put us in the right posture and we can kind of feel it, but when we start to see it and it goes through our visual abilities, then the body starts to learn it better. I'm trying to stay away from the big words, but basically if your body sees what you're trying to do, it's going to learn it faster. Alright, so a string in the mirror, we're going to close one eye and we're going to put our feet right in the middle. We're going to follow that string up with the eye closed, we're going to put it right through our nose. Now we're straight up and down. We're going to take a look at our shoulders. We're going to take a look at where our arms are hanging on our legs or where our hands are on our thighs. And we're just going to make sure that those are the same height. If one side is higher, we're going to drop it down. We're going to put those hands on the sides right in the same spot. And now we're straight up and down and level, which is awesome. Your nervous system thinks that's great. That's the way it was designed and programmed to be. And we need to bring it back there if it's not there already. Then we're gonna turn into the side mirror. I don't know if you guys are gonna catch this or not, but in these side mirrors we can actually see our profile, and what that means is we can see our ear and our tip of the shoulder. Now if I'm just hanging out casual, it kind of looks like this, but what we want to do is we really want to bring that up and back at 45 degrees until the ear gets in line with the tip of the shoulder, and that's more where we want to start working that, and that's why we're doing the adjustments, and that's why we're doing the molding lying on the spinal molds or the foam wedges, because over time this can be retrained. It's gotten there because of some habits over time, and if we change those habits, we can retrain it. And it's great not only because of the aesthetics or how it looks, but it's very important for your nervous system. It removes dangerous pressure from that nervous system so that it can go back to doing what it was designed and programmed to do in healing in your body and regulating all the functions. 3-way mirror every time you come in for your visit, but even at home, even without the 3-way, every time you go to the washroom and you wash your hands every time you're walking and you're window shopping, every time you see a mirror reflection, now it's going to remind you, sit tall, stand tall, and that's an important reminder, alright? So that's your tip for today.
