In this YouTube monologue, Dr. David Koivuranta (Dr. Dave) shares recent experiences with three patients who slipped on icy conditions in Toronto. He explains how seemingly minor falls—especially among seniors—can later manifest as neck or back pain, a pattern also seen after car accidents. Dr. Dave stresses the importance of having any slip, fall, or minor injury evaluated promptly, regardless of immediate pain levels. He outlines the range of professionals who can assess body symmetry and joint function (physiotherapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, acupuncturists, athletic therapists, personal trainers) and highlights the chiropractor’s focus on spinal joints. The video concludes with practical winter safety advice: walk carefully, avoid overexertion on hazardous terrain, and seek professional assessment early to prevent long‑term issues.

Hello everyone, it's Dr. Dave. Hopefully you're all doing well, enjoying yourselves, having a good week, taking care of each other, creating those great experiences in your life. I've had 2 days of practice this week. I'm shooting this on a Wednesday, and in those 2 days I've had 3 people come in who have experienced a slip and fall on the ice. It's a little bit wintery here still in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and 2 of the people unfortunately were seniors. Not that it makes a difference, but sometimes it can be a little bit harder, and one of them wasn't. 2 of them fell in their yard and one of them actually fell 3 times when they were walking from their home to where they were headed. And it was so great for them to be able to share with me the fact that they were feeling better, but they wanted to make sure that they didn't experience anything more than what they were feeling from that slip and fall, which is in sharp contrast to a lot of people who have had slips and falls. The pain goes away, they feel better, but They don't know that something isn't sitting or moving right because of that slip and fall because they didn't have it checked, and because they felt fine, they assumed everything was good until a month, a year, 5 years later, and the only thing they can attribute to that area that they can recall when they get that neck or back pain is having had that fall. But at the fall, the time of the fall, they weren't that bad. Now, this is not only limited to slip and fall. This is the same kind of story we hear from athletes with histories from the past accidents from the past, sorry, car accidents, similar situation. Yeah, I had a car accident, wasn't that bad, I walked away, I didn't have any pain. But the only thing they can attribute to their neck or back pain is this incident from the past that wasn't a big deal, but it definitely has an impact not only on how you feel but also on how you function. So a big tip with slip and falls and other accidents or injuries, regardless of how you feel, is to get it checked. Now, who can check you? Anybody could check you—physiotherapist, chiropractor, massage therapist, even an acupuncturist, athletic therapist, some personal trainer. They can check and make sure that your body looks like it's decently symmetrical and that your movement is symmetrical and it's not limited in any way. That's just one of the things to check. Chiropractor can specifically check the over 75 joints in your spine as well as the other joints in your body for how they feel and how well they're moving compared to the ideal and left-to-right comparison. And if there's a change there, it might be valuable for you to try and recover recover some of that function so it doesn't become a future issue. Now, if you're having a future issue right now that might be based on an old slip and fall or accident or injury, best thing you can do is get it checked as soon as you can because the longer it's there, typically the more impact it can have on your overall health and wellness and the harder it might be to correct, alright? So go get those slip and falls checked out. Walk carefully, be cautious, and don't overdo things in inclement weather or on bad terrain. Areas where there might be a chance to trip or slip and fall, just be very cautious. Alright? I wish you the best and take care. Keep creating those great experiences.
