In this video, we're going to talk about black mold in your washing machine and what to do about it. I'm Dr. Diane Mueller, Lyme and mold expert. Mold can cause so many health problems, so we want to do what we can to completely eliminate it as much as possible. We're always going to encounter mold on some level, just like we encounter bacteria and other types of microorganisms. There's no such thing as truly a mold free environment. That being said, we want to do what we can to minimize mold exposure. And much of the time, if you find mold around your house, I do not recommend diying it because you can actually throw bleach on things and make things worse. Spread the mold around. Look for my other videos on how to kill black mold in order to learn more about that. Now, as far as washing machines, washing machines are an area that you can DIY it. And some of that is because there's ways of keeping the mold very concentrated while you're killing it so you're not spreading it around. See what tends to happen if we are say scrubbing mold off of a wall using bleach and if we put bleach on it, the mold pores spread throughout the wall, they try to survive, so that's problematic. So we can actually spread the mold around and make it worse with a washing machine. If you do it right, you're actually containing the mold while you're killing it, so you're not spreading it around. So that's one of the reasons you can DIY it. Now what you want to make sure also is if you're purchasing a machine, try to get a top loader and not a front loader. Front loaders tend to collect about 15% ish. More of a chance of having mold. So they do tend to grow mold more easily than those top loading machine. So make sure you get a top loading machine. Also leave your lid up between washes so the the washer can completely dry out and you're not trapping that moisture inside. Now what I recommend in order to prevent mold is add some vinegar to your wash, right? Add about a quarter cup of vinegar to every couple washes. That helps not only keep your clothes fresh, it also helps to reduce the mold in the machine. Now if you have mold in your machine, what tends to work best is to do a very concentrated white vinegar flush with it. So using several cups of white vinegar into a load without any clothes on it or clothes in it, add a few drops of tea tree essential oil and run a cycle that should take care of it. You want to run a few cycles after that to really flush it to get that vinegar smell out. Because. Because now we're using a lot of vinegar. Now if you are. Are trying to scrub it out or that sort of thing, usually you don't see the need for that. But that's when things get a little bit trickier because the moment you try to scrub it, you're releasing the spores into the air, and they could potentially land somewhere else and create a new mold colony and grow in another area. So it's usually best to try to contain it by adding that vinegar with closing that lid, running cycles so that those mold spores are contained as they're dying and they're not being spread around. Like I said, adding a few drops of tea tree essential oil to the vinegar also is very anti mold as well. All right, everybody, that's it for now. I hope this has helped you.
