Do PHAGES Hold the Key to a Stronger Immune System?

Dr. Diane Mueller explains how bacteriophages, viruses in your microbiome, can help fight Lyme disease and chronic bacterial infections by targeting harmful bacteria while sparing good ones. NSAIDs can accidentally activate phages to attack beneficial microbes. Animal studies show phage therapy enhances white-blood-cell function and reduces inflammation.

Hi everybody, Dr. Diane Mueller Mueller here. We are talking today about a hidden treatment for Lyme, chronic infections, and mold that is a very simple thing to do that not a lot of people are doing. So before we get into that, in order to understand what this treatment is, I need to make you— make sure you understand a little bit more about the microbiome. So most people are pretty aware at this point that we have good bacteria in our body. We also, however, have good viruses in our body. These viruses are called phages. Phages are bio— are part of our microbiome. And what phages do, they're viruses that actually will attack bacteria. So the phages that we have naturally in our body are really smart. They know how to attack bad bacteria and they do not attack our good bacteria. Some things that we do in life, such as taking NSAIDs, for example, can actually activate our own phages. However, of course, when we are activating phages by these exterior ways, such as NSAIDs or such with, such as with certain drugs, one of the things that happens is there becomes a non-selective version of how these phages actually work. What I mean by that is when we're using a lot of these exterior pharmaceutical types of ways to increase the phage activity in our body, the phages get confused and they essentially start attacking our good bacteria instead of just going after the bad bacteria. Now, there is some new research coming out about certain frequencies, about certain, um, frequencies that can be applied to the body. And when these frequencies are applied, there is potential for these phages actually going after only bad bacteria, such as Lyme disease, and not going after the good bacteria of our microbiome. Now, while that research is being developed, there is another solution for how you can help support these phages. You can actually take products that contain phages in them. These are natural viruses akin and similar to what we have in our body, and they will actually go after bacteria such as Borrelia, the Lyme bacteria, Bartonella, as well as any other potential hidden infections you may have. Now, we see in studies— studies have showed that phage therapy can clear infections, especially in immunocompetent animals. So in the animal studies, what we see is that the phages actually make the white blood cells work better, and that's part of how they kill the bacteria. So we do need to have a functioning white blood cell system for these phages to actually work. Now, many people with Lyme do have white blood cell problems, but quite a few people do have a working white blood cell system, in which case these phages could be a great idea. Another thing that happens with phages is they can actually interact with our inflammatory response and cause a slowing down. We call it downregulation of our inflammatory response. This is another way to consider the use of phages because with Lyme, with other chronic infections, as well as with things like mold toxins, we have so much inflammation in the body, and sometimes we need to look for things that are going to lower inflammation and take the edge of the pressure off of the inflammation for the individual before we actually go into fighting, or while we go into fighting the, the root cause. And phages can help lower that inflammation as well. So by no means do I think that phages are this cure-all that's going to revolutionize everything we know about Lyme and mold. However, from a standpoint of a supportive therapy that could help make the immune system work better, that is real close to the as natural as it gets. And as a way of lowering inflammation to help modulate and help lessen some of those symptoms while people are looking for the roots, phages can be amazing for that. So I hope this has been helpful.
