ERMI Testing Mastery: A Step-by-Step Guide to Evaluating Home Mold Levels

Dr. Diane Mueller explains how to use ERMI, a home mold test that swabs dust from your house to screen for about three dozen molds. Use one rag for small to medium homes, multiple for large ones. If results show a problem, call a professional for inspection and remediation.

Common question I get when testing the house for mold is should you test every room in isolation? So the best home mold test on the market is the ermi. The ERMI is going to look for about three dozen different molds. It's going to be very, very thorough to make sure you're looking for the most biologically problematic mold. It tests dust. Remember, mold particles are oftentimes heavy, so they don't suspend an air, meaning air samples will miss them. And so when you run an ermi, typically they will tell you to sample air every room in the house separately. This is so that you could say, tell somebody, tell a remediator and inspector like, look here, look here, look here. I don't use it that way because I'm working with quality inspectors. What I tend to find is they want to do their due diligence to check every room anyways to make sure that nothing is missed, to make sure they're being very thorough for you. So it's basically the home mold ERMI test I use as a red light or a green light to see, see if the home is safe. And you need to call in the professionals because they're going to want to do their due diligence. And so all you really need to do is swipe the house. Now, if the house is extremely big, right? So if you have like, you know, 5, 6000 square foot house or more, then you're probably going to want to use a couple different swipers because you're just going to not have enough of the dust cloth rag that you collect dust with to send to the lab. You're just probably not going to have enough stuff space on it. But if you have more of a moderate or small house, then you will want to typically use one rag. You dust as many places as possible around the house. And when you get the sample, what you're looking to do is just tell the inspector, yes, I need you to come or no, I don't. So it's really a red light, green light. It's a low investment way to say, is there a problem here before you call in professionals? That will actually cost a lot more money than that's all you're doing with this. That's what I recommend. If you're interested in getting your test, your house tested for a, in a really good way, like I'm talking about here with the ermi. Go to my lab testing site in the show notes. You'll see at that lab testing site you'll see that there is a way to order tests like this direct to consumers. What you're looking for is the home mold test, and I think that's it for now. Please do leave comments that I can help you with here. It helps me create more content that's enjoyable for you. Again, I'm Dr. Diane. I'll see you in the next video.
