Mold Illness Symptoms: My Harrowing Experience (and How I Healed)

Dr. Diane Mueller, a mold expert, describes living in moldy houses and developing severe symptoms: excruciating pain she compares to a leg being sawed off, brain fog, night sweats, and a distinctive fever-like insomnia. Mold illness is toxin buildup, not allergy, which is why tolerance varies. She recovered by moving out and discarding contaminated items.

Hey, everybody. Dr. Diane, your Lyman mold expert here, talking today about my own personal journey with mold illness. So this is a really important story because so many people do not understand mold illness and frankly, don't take it very seriously. I was in multiple houses throughout my life that had mold in them. And so I've dealt with the intensity of living in a place that is making you sick and then having to navigate with physical figuring that out while you're sick. It is horrible. It is so, so, so, so hard. But here's the thing. For me, many people have heard my story. My story is that I had a lot of pain. I had pain so bad, my leg was being sawed off. I had brain fog. Talked about that in association with Lyme disease in my last video. But it really was confusing from a standpoint of symptoms because some of these symptoms were more Lyme related, some of them were mold, and many of them were both. But the big thing to really understand is mold illness is not an allergy. Illness is a toxin buildup. And so this is why some people can be sick in a household and other people cannot. And I'm telling you, it's like, so even, like treating and working with people in mold illness for almost 15 years, it was still so hard. Especially the second time, the second house that had a leak behind the wall, which ended up being a black mold situation, totally invisible to the naked eye. And I just started having these really weird symptoms again. Symptoms that I know to be mold illness symptoms. For me, interesting things in my extremities. A mold ill symptom for me that's very common is these intense night sweats and insomnia. It's this very, very particular type of insomnia where no matter what temperature it is, I am just burning up like I have a fever. So that started happening. So I knew there was mold. And I remember waking up in this one particular house in the middle of the night and I was just like, oh, my God, there's mold here. And luckily I have a doctor colleague, very, very dear friend in town and was able to call her, pack up my stuff at the wee hours of the morning, went to her house, and basically never slept at house again while I was figuring everything out. So that's really the intensity of mold illness, right? It's like it is so it can be so disturbing to the neurological system and it can be so disturbing to the mind and the emotional track. It's very easy to feel like you're losing your mind, and it can be very, very difficult Oftentimes, especially because it is so hard to wrap the brain around that the house that is supposed to be keeping you safe, that is your sanctuary, that is a place, place you go to restore, to revive, is making you sick. Plus sometimes when you try to figure out houses that are not as moldy, because it's not about eliminating mold from the house, it's about lowering the mold to a threshold of tolerance. And everybody's tolerance is different, but usually you need a pretty low tolerance once your immune system has started being unable to remove the toxins from mold. So my journey was a multifold journey of many houses, of leaks behind the wall, of moving multiple times, of re cleaning stu, of throwing stuff away. And it is a journey. It is, you know, it is. So every time I, I walk a client how to do this, it breaks my heart because I remember what it's like to go through that and to have no energy and no brain capacity and you're fighting for your life, you really are, but the only way out is through. And so what we have to do in these scenarios is really understand and as quickly as possible figure out another situation, even if it's temporary, to get out of that place that's so moldy so our brain can begin to funct again and we can deal with this problem. So I hope you'll join me for my next master class. Most of my master classes at this point in time are free to the public. It's a time for you to ask me questions, to help, to get some answers, to get educated on if you should consider mold illness, what tests are really good for your house, those sorts of things. So please do join me in my next master class. Please subscribe if this has been helpful and I'll see you in the next video.
