In this solo talk, Dr. Jameca Cooper, a psychologist with two decades of clinical, research, and teaching experience, introduces the third installment of her "30 Days of Radical Healing" series, focusing on music as a therapeutic self‑care tool. She explains that, beyond enjoyment, music has three empirically supported healing benefits: (1) it lowers anxiety – she notes that roughly 70 % of her psychotherapy clients present with anxiety‑related issues and cites multiple studies showing music’s anxiolytic effect; (2) it reduces perceived pain – research with chronic‑pain patients and hospital settings demonstrates that music distracts attention and provides emotional resonance that eases pain; and (3) it boosts happiness – music reliably elevates mood regardless of external circumstances. Dr. Cooper encourages viewers to use their favorite tunes when feeling stressed or down, promises a follow‑up video on which genres are most healing, and invites comments and subscriptions to shape future content.

Hi, I'm Dr. Jameca Cooper. Thanks for joining me today to watch this video. I really, really appreciate you taking your time to watch the video to learn something. Hopefully you like the video and subscribe to the channel. I'm really interested in knowing what viewers would like to see more of, but what you already know is that I am a psychologist and I've been a psychologist for 20 years. Which means that I've done a little bit of work in the area based in research, teaching, and psychotherapy, as well as consulting, traveling all over the world to do the same thing that I'm doing right now and talking to you about with Jez Mental Health. So right now we're in the midst of our 30 Days of Radical Healing, and the goal is to get you on a path to healing so that you can maintain yourself, self-care and balance all of this year. Today we're talking about the power of music. Everyone loves music, right? I mean, you should. I know I do. I listen to music a lot, all day long. But sometimes I feel like people forget that music has other benefits. And one of the benefits of music is healing, healing, especially radical healing. And there have been a lot of studies that have been out that have talked about the different ways that music can be healing. So I'm going to tell you about the 3 different benefits of music for radical healing. First benefit, number 1, is listening to music— studies have shown this numerous times— listening to music can lower, decrease your anxiety, right? How good is that? A lot of people struggle with anxiety. When I think about the percentage of people that I see in psychotherapy with issues that are solely anxiety or that stem from their anxiety, I would say it's about 70% of people that I work with suffer from anxiety, whether you call that, um, OCD type of tendencies, generalized anxiety, panic disorders, any of those things. Social anxiety is even big. So people have anxiety, so it is so necessary to be looking at things that can help you improve your anxiety and therefore feel at peace in your own body and in the world. Second thing that music can do that can be healing for you is to decrease the levels of pain that you suffer from, right? Studies have shown this numerous times that music has a healing property. They've done these studies looking at individuals in chronic pain and individuals in hospitals, and they looked at them with music and without music, and by and large, studies show that music can help improve pain levels. Why? When you think about it, what happens when you listen to music? It really kinda takes your mind off everything going on, especially if it's a song you like a tune that you like, maybe you're thinking, where have I heard this before? And sometimes it's lyrics that really kind of resonate with you, and you can think back on, you know what, these lyrics make sense to me. So think about all those things, and you will definitely understand why music can be healing and can help you improve your pain. Third thing, third thing, third benefit of music for healing properties Dr. Jameca Cooper Cooper, music can increase your level of happiness. Isn't that great? Everyone could use a bigger amount of happiness in their life. No matter how good your life is now, everyone wants to be happier. Even if you just got paid and your check is big, you're still looking for ways to be happy. So maybe how you're gonna spend your money is gonna make you happy. But happiness, the third thing that can be helped by music. Music can do lots of things, but in this case, it can definitely be healing. Now, in one of my next videos, I'm going to talk about what type of music can be healing. I want to focus a little bit more on that later, but for now, I just want to get you on board to the, the healing properties of music so that the next time you feel stressed out, the next time you feel down about something, turn on your favorite tune. It can help you, and it can help you in a lot of ways. So thanks for tuning in. Drop some comments, tell me what you want to hear more from, more about. I'm here for all of it. I'm Dr. Jameca Cooper, and thank you for tuning in.
