In this video Dr. Jameca Cooper explains why individuals with histrionic personality disorder (HPD) are drawn to particular personality types and why certain personalities tend to attract HPD individuals. She outlines four main traits that make someone appealing to a histrionic person: (1) a secure, confident sense of self‑esteem that isn’t threatened by attention‑seeking behavior; (2) a high level of acceptance and appreciation for diverse backgrounds and personalities; (3) a mutual enjoyment of entertainment, where one person likes to be the center of attention and the other enjoys being entertained; and (4) an extroverted or socially outgoing style, noting that introverts may only tolerate short bursts of histrionic energy. Dr. Cooper emphasizes that these dynamics are reflected in the social circles of people with HPD, suggesting that examining a histrionic individual’s friends can reveal these patterns. She concludes with a call to subscribe and watch related videos on HPD criteria and symptoms.

Hi, I'm Dr. Jameca Cooper, and thanks for tuning in today. Today we're going to talk about why certain personality types are attracted to histrionics, or another way to look at that is why are histrionics attracted to certain personality types. In individuals? And I have a few different answers for you today to help you understand the dynamics. We've talked about in previous videos already what a person with histrionic personality disorder is, what the criteria are, what the signs, the symptoms, what to look for. So make sure you subscribe to the channel and make sure you tune in to the other videos. So when we talk about the criteria or the, the symptoms or the behaviors that attract a histrionic person to another individual, we have to look at the things that a histrionic individual would like. So typically they're going to be attracted to individuals that are extroverted, but not always. So sometimes they could be attracted to introverts. Um, I'll talk a little bit more about that in a second, but they typically are going to be around individuals who have a more stable or a more secure sense of self. In other words, histrionics are going to be more attracted to individuals who have a really solid sense of self-esteem. In other words, they're confident in themselves, they feel good about who they are, they feel good about themselves and their space in the world. So why is a person with histrionic personality disorder attracted to that? Simple, because it allows them the the space and the time to be themselves. So they can be around people who have really confident levels of self-esteem, and those people are not going to be threatened at all by the behavior of a person with histrionic personality disorder. They're not going to be threatened at all by their need for attention. So it's, it's really about how those two things match— the need of the person with histrionic personality disorder and what the other person can allow and how they can allow them to be. So another trait that you would see in individuals that are typically around those with histrionic personality disorder would be a higher level of acceptance. So it could be the type of individuals that are just more accepting of a wide range of different personalities and different behaviors and different backgrounds of people. Um, those people would definitely be more accepting of a person who really feels the need to be in the center of attention all the time and really feels the need to gain the attention of those around them. So if they're more accepting of different people, so maybe they're the type of person that has friends from all different types of backgrounds, all different ages, races, ethnicities, um, socioeconomic statuses, languages, um, that person is going to be obviously more accepting of people. And maybe that person also values the differences and the variety in people. So that person is going to be more accepting of an individual with histrionic. So therefore, usually individuals with histrionic personality disorder are going to be more attracted to friends like that, or people that they would hang around. Another trait that you would see in someone that might hang around a person with histrionic personality disorder is that they would like to be entertained. So if you see a person with histrionic personality disorder, you're likely to also see a person that likes to entertain the crowd. They like to be the center of attention. They like for you to watch them. They like for you to listen to them. They like for you to laugh at them. They like for you to pay attention. So typically they're going to hang around people or spend time with people that also like to be entertained. So you get it? So one person likes to entertain and the other person likes to be entertained. So these are the types of dynamics you're going to see in the relationships of a person with histrionic personality disorder. So, um, again, back to the extrovert part of it. You don't have to be an extrovert to be comfortable around introverts. You could be an introvert, but likely what would happen with an introvert is because they need so much downtime to recharge and they need space and they need to withdraw from energy, I'm going to say that likely that energy that's given by a person with histrionic personality disorder is going to be too much for most introverts. So they wouldn't be able to deal with it for long periods of time, but they should be successful in dealing with it for short bouts of time. So I hope you learned something about the different traits that a person who has histrionic personality disorder is likely to be around. So in other words, if you're going to look at a person who suffers from histrionic personality disorder, you also need to be looking at their circle. What does their circle look like? And it will be some of these traits that I talked about today. Make sure you subscribe to this channel. Thank you for tuning in. I'm Dr. Jameca Cooper.
