Why You Won’t Find Healing Through Kevin Samuels

This content was created by Dr. Jameca Cooper. This content was uploaded by Dr. Jameca Cooper. This is a YouTube video titled "Why You Won’t Find Healing Through Kevin Samuels" (published January 9, 2022) featuring Dr. Jameca Cooper delivering a solo presentation as part of her "30 Days of Radical Healing" series. In the video Cooper (a psychologist who mentions ~20 years of experience and being a Fulbright Scholar) explains why Kevin Samuels — whom she identifies as an image consultant — is not a healer and therefore not a source of psychological healing. She contrasts the roles of image consultants and psychologists, acknowledges Samuels' impact for certain audiences while noting his harsh style, and promotes her channel’s forthcoming videos on body image, self-esteem, meditation, healing from dysfunctional families, and racial battle fatigue.

Hi, I'm Dr. Jameca Cooper. Thanks so much for joining today and watching this video, taking time out of your busy schedule to watch the video and to learn something. By now you already know that we are in the 30 Days of Radical Healing because I want everyone to be on a much better path for 2022. Make sure you like this video and make sure you subscribe to this channel for more information. By now you already know that I am a psychologist, been a psychologist for 20 years. I've taught, done research, done therapy, consulted all over the world. I'm a Fulbright Scholar. You name it, I've pretty much done it. In addition to that, I have two sons that I raised, and I've been married, divorced, dated, and remarried again. So I've kind of done it all in these few years. I will not say the years for sure, but today we're talking about Can you be healed? Can you get radical healing from Kevin Samuels? Does Kevin Samuels want you to be healed? Is that what he wants from you? The number one reason why you will not find healing from Kevin Samuels or on the Kevin Samuels channel is because— ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. Stay tuned for the answer. First, I want to tell you a little bit about what my role as a psychologist is. My role as a psychologist is to be a good listener, someone that can really sit down with a person and establish good boundaries, good trust. I'm someone that people like to talk to. They feel comfortable with me. They trust me. They know that everything that they say in therapy is going to stay right there. They also trust in my education, my experience, and my competence. In other words, they know that I can help them. I'm a psychologist, and most people would say that good traits for a psychologist would be— the biggest one would be having a good ear and being able to listen. Um, I think the next highest quality would be someone that you can trust and someone that you feel comfortable with. I think the rest kind of falls out under the line. I'm a psychologist. That's what the job description is for me. The number one reason why you will not find healing from Kevin Samuels is because he's not a healer. His job, as he says, is an image consultant. All of his years of work experience, or at least most of them, have been in the field of image consulting. In other words, what do image consultants do? And I'm going to read it. It says they improve the image of the client personally and professionally through appearance, behavior, and communication. So his job is you go to him, he's going to make you appear to be better. So better looking, more presentable, more professional to obtain the job you want or to get in the spaces or the rooms that you want. That is his profession. That's where his experience is. So, A person who's an image consultant is not a healer. So I think that people hold him to the standards, the same standards that they would hold me to. In other words, they expect me to listen. They expect me to understand what they're going on. They expect me to understand what's going on in their lives. They expect me to not be biased and not say things that could be offensive or insulting to them because as a psychologist, that's not our nature and that's not our role, right? We're here to to uplift people and to build them up and not to tear them down. But so many times people hold Kevin Samuels to the same standard that they would hold a psychologist to, and that's not fair to him. So it would almost be like people coming to me and expecting me to, oh, now tell me what looks right, like what type of dress should I wear? Like, that's not my wheelhouse. That's not what I do. What I do is try to help people get better and try to help people and walk with them on their journey of healing. So Again, the number one reason why you will not find healing through or with Kevin Samuels is because he's not a healer. That's not what he's there for. He's there to give people advice on what they need to do to get in better spaces. And most times it is get a partner, to attract a partner, keep a partner. They wonder why they haven't gotten this type of partner. He's there giving that type of information and it doesn't always come with, you know, hugs and giggles. Sometimes it's hardcore. And as an image consultant, he can be hardcore because that's part of his role. And if you're coming onto his show, he can really be however he wants, right? So that's the number one reason I definitely respect the work that Kevin Samuels is doing. It takes a lot of work to do a YouTube channel, to put ideas out, and to make yourself vulnerable for what people might say about you. So I do believe that he is helping a segment of of the population, whether that's women who want to be married, women who want to be married to a certain type of person. There are people out there, lots of people out there because I see them in therapy that want to date and marry the very type of men that Kevin Samuels is talking about. So do I think everything he says is right? Do I think it's, it's nice? No. A lot of it is harsh. Sometimes it's rude. He's an image consultant. I'm a psychologist. I don't do and say those same things, but we have different titles and different roles. So I'm Dr. Jameca Cooper. Make sure you tune in for more information on radical healing.
