A podcast interview excerpt with Kevin O'Donovan discussing the role of immersive technologies in the metaverse. He argues VR/AR will be important enablers but widespread headset adoption is unlikely in the near term; mixed-reality approaches (some users on 2D screens, others in VR) will bridge participation.

I think there'll be a lot of metaverses or system of systems or whatever, but certainly for an immersive experience, whether that's AR or VR, they're gonna be key. But I think one of the biggest challenges is that not everybody's gonna be wearing a VR headset next year or in five years time, unless there's again, a revolutionary breakthrough in, I don't know, some sort of contact lens that works for everybody. And away we go. With today's technology, not everyone's gonna be wearing VR. It's got its challenges, so it's a key piece of the puzzle. But I think what companies are doing with kind of being able to this mixed reality, if you want to call it, where some people will be on a 2D screen looking at what's going on and other people will be in that virtual world. So I do think it's a key enabler, but I don't think it's a. We don't have to wait for everybody to suddenly be using VR before this thing will keep going.
