In this episode of the "Living a Life in Full" podcast, host Dr. Chris Stout interviews Paul Ronto, Director of Digital Content and CMO at Run Repeat, about the company's data‑driven approach to footwear reviews and the groundbreaking "State of Ultrarunning 2020" report. Run Repeat aggregates millions of user and expert shoe reviews, distilling them into a simple 1‑100 core score that guides consumers. The report, produced with the International Association of Ultrarunners, analyzes over 5 million race results from more than 15 000 ultra‑marathons spanning 23 years. Key findings include a 345 % increase in ultra participation over the past decade, women now comprising 23 % of participants (up from 14 % in the early 1990s), and a surprising gender‑pace reversal at distances beyond 195 miles where women are on average 0.6 % faster than men. Average paces have slowed as participation broadens, reflecting a shift from elite competition to experience‑driven participation. The study also reveals high "obsession" rates: 41 % of ultra runners entered more than one race per year in 2018, far exceeding other distances. Participants frequently travel abroad for ultras, with 10 % doing so, compared to 0.2 % for 5 k races. Country‑level analysis shows South Africa, Sweden, and Germany posting the fastest average paces, though data limitations (road vs. trail) affect interpretation. DNFs were excluded from the dataset. Throughout the conversation, the hosts discuss the community, non‑competitive mindset, and the spiritual aspects of ultra running, and hint at future data‑driven studies on triathlon, Olympic sports, racism in soccer, and doping. The episode also promotes Dr. Stout’s nonprofit, the Center for Global Initiatives.
