Dr. David Serio talks with communication coach Roberto Monaco about influence and persuasion. Monaco explains how to master self-talk, one-on-one conversations, and public speaking, with examples from his work coaching chiropractors and other professionals.
Thank you for being in this space, the chiropractic universe by Dr. David Serio. We are very grateful that you are here. Hi everyone. Thank you for being here in the chiropractic universe. I'm so excited. Today we have a special guest, my brother, Roberto Monaco. Thank you for sharing the videos. Thank you for sending questions, comments. This is one that you definitely want to share. So before I enter it, before I present Roberto to start giving his story, first, I want to tell you a little bit about what he means to me. First of all, I never met Roberto Monaco in person. That is the power of so about technology today. But we are like brothers. People were telling me for years, you have to meet Roberto Monaco. He's an unbelievable communication influence coach. But my ego was too big. I thought that I was like a master. And when I met Roberto the first time, I'm like, I'm not even in preschool with this stuff. So he's been Vita Chiropractic Worldwide's communication and influence coach. We had him for over a year and a half and we will have him back. One of the greatest investments I ever made for our team. Anything to do with communication, influence, attracting people, even to do with landing pages and stuff like that. This is you, your master. I believe he is the greatest communication coach out there. Not just for chiropractors, for anyone. So thank you, Roberto, for being here in this space.
Thanks so much, Dr. Cyril. You're my brother. So funny. The. The whole idea about technology. I think you and I know each other for maybe four or five years and I talk to you all the time, whatsapping, and you never actually met in person, which is like, sometimes I forget about it. But yeah, actually I never hugged the guy, you know, ever.
I can't wait to come and check your family and give you a couple of all adjustments.
So I'll be honored, buddy. I'll be honored.
So, Roberto, I just want you to tell us a little bit about your story. Like, okay, how did you get into communications influence? Tell us a little bit about your path.
So my path. I'm going to give you the short version. So I grew up in Brazil. And in Brazil I work in a huge bank called Banco de Brazil. When I was working there, I started when I was 15 years old and then I was 20. When I was turned 25, I got my diploma in finance. And I remember one day holding my diploma and I asked this question. I said, if I work the next 30 years, do I want to be, quote unquote, the president of the bank or one of the directors. And I had this gut feeling, like, nope. And then I quit. Everybody thought I was crazy. Everybody said, man, you're crazy, because it was a really good job. I was just, I was not very passionate about it. And I decided to travel. I went to Europe, then I came to America. And in this journey, I always grew up in Brazil watching soccer players and singers. And I used to tell my mom, mom one day when I have that. And she used to tease me like, look, you can't play soccer, you can't sing. What do you mean? And I don't know, I want to have that feeling that I was made for something. I was talking about purpose, but I couldn't articulate because I wasn't aware. And fast forward, years later, I'm reading a book and I come up with this. I read this question. The question said, I'm sure you guys, the listeners here, you heard this question before. The question said, if you could do anything in your life and you knew you could not fail, what we'll be doing today, right here, right now. And it was really a had an interrupt where I went, like, I don't know. So that answer, I don't know, led me to years, self development. And eventually, I look back, all my life growing up in Brazil, I was the guy who was always talking to people, trying to help people, trying to elevate them. And growing up in Brazil didn't have the coaching. There's no quote unquote coaching industry there. And then eventually I realized, you know what, I might be a. I might try to be a coach or some type of speaker. Eventually I got a job with the Anthony Robbins companies for six years. And then after doing a couple thousand talks with him, I opened up my company, Fluentology, with my business partner, 2008, 2009. And now since then, I've been working for almost 13 years. We work with 40 different industries to help them tell the story. So that's the quick version. Wow.
Just, just amazing. Because, you know, Tony Robbins, who was one of my mentors since before chiropractic school, always says the quality of life based on the quality of questions you ask. So, you know, I can't even imagine Roberto, you doing anything else. You know, I can't imagine you a financier. It's like that those key questions led you to this path and you've helped personally. I know a ton of chiropractors that you've personally helped. And you know, we're not going to go into your chiropractic story today because it's, it's on your websites and stuff. So if you want to hear his personal story of how he discovered chiropractic, it's unbelievable. And where can someone connect with that story and find you people before we go any further?
Yeah, if you go to chirospeaking.com on YouTube or on a website, there's a 10 minute story. I recommend everybody because sometimes if you're listening to us right now and you're not on the chiropractic care, then you should go and check out the story. If you are on the chiropractic care for pain or back pain, neck pain, and you go sometimes and you don't understand chiropractic, go watch this story. This is, there's a lot of things that you want to understand are going to make sense to you once you hear the story.
I've heard that story several times now and every time it inspires me to get to more people with chiropractic care. So got a couple questions for not just for chiropractors, let's say Roberto, for anyone. I'm a, I'm a. I'm a mom and my, my job is to take care of the kids. Or I'm a mom. I'm a mom and I work in a bank. Or I'm a dad and I stay home and take care of the kids. Or I'm a dad and I go to work in the city and I work in whatever. Or I'm a chiropractor. Whatever I am. Whatever I am. Why I want to know three to five key points. Whatever you are on this planet, however old you are. Why is becoming a master at communication so vital for life?
Well, I would say that when you look at communication or influence, I like to separate into levels. So level one is the communication that you have with yourself. So you have to master that, your internal dialogue. Because before you do anything, before you take action, you've got to influence yourself and to take action. I remember I used to wake up at 6am and every day, then eventually went 5am Then I had two kids. And in my house I have a rule. 5 o', clock everything stops. 5pm everything stops. Because I want to be a very involved dad. I want to make sure to have dinner and hang out and then I give them bath time. So what that means is that now my day got compressed and I moved to 4am so every day 4am my alarm goes off. So I have to learn how to influence myself into action so that I have not only Go early to bed, but I wake up early so I can still master the day. So if you, a lot of people, they're not able to influence themselves into action. If you're a mom, if you're a dad, if you have a job, and sometimes you have this goal, this vision, this dream, they're here, you're here. There's a gap. And a lot of times the gap is not skills about mindset. You got to have the skills of like, influence yourself into action. And that comes from. So what does that come from? How do I do that? Well, it comes from your purpose. Why you do what you do comes from, from your vision. How do you like your life to be like, feel like a year from today, five years from today? Comes from your value systems. What do you value? What do you value most? And I experience those values, your belief system. It's a combination of things. So I think level one, got to be able to influence yourself into action. If you don't, won't happen. Number two, level two is communication.
About that, I want to say about that because that is totally aligned with the chiropractic philosophy inside out. And, and I want to add to this because I've done so much coaching with Roberto. That also means the communication you have for yourself, you know, what are you saying to yourself every day? You know, you could be your own worst enemy or greatest hero. And you know, and Roberto's talked about that as well. The communication you have for you, for your, to yourself. And that, that, that's so aligned with our philosophy because, like first inside out, you know, you don't have it in here. How are you gonna put it out there?
So beautiful. Beautiful. The. So even before I, before you go into a zoom call, I mean, what is your, what is your state nowadays? Or everybody does zoom presentations. Sometimes Speaking One on one, like here, sometimes you're doing groups. I know Dr. Siri does all training with VIDA. They have 30, 40, 50, 60 people. So, so what do you do? How you. Why are you telling yourself before, right? How you feel before. So instead of like just going in, you always in control. You're always in control. The second thing I feel is the second level is communication. One on one. Because most of us spend most of the time talking to one on one. And then you have to have a mastery. I think the one of the ideas nowadays is to become super present people. Charisma, being able to communicate. Charisma is not just a public speaking thing of a group thing. You can be a very charismatic presenter speaking to that person with just one person. And charisma comes from being present, meaning when you talk someone, you're not thinking about your phone, you're not thinking about what's going to happen in the future. You don't think about past. Charisma comes from warmth. Warmth, meaning having empathy, respect people. And charisma comes from expertise. So when I'm. When I'm communicating like one on one with people, if I want to be even more effective. Three things you can do today is, number one, are you present? Right? When you're talking to your kid or to your husband or to wife, are you 100% present? Number two, warmth. Are you projecting warmth? Are you speaking from your heart? Do you have empathy? Are you speaking without judging people? Number three, if you are in a quote, unquote, in a scenario of influence or selling, then you want to tell the third one to be like expertise, right? When you bring expertise. So this framework of charisma, communication, presence, warmth, and expertise make sure we want to increase elevator influence, the next level.
I want to say something because I don't know Roberto knows this yet, but one of the biggest things I learned from him wasn't anything he said. It was his example. And you know, me as a, as a chiropractic mentor, one of the issues that I had with myself was not judging the path of people. Like, why isn't this person busier? You know, I think they should be busier, but. Or whatever it is, whatever it is, why isn't there talk to where I thought it should be? And I realized with Roberto, that's like all ego. And, you know, and I. And when he coached us, there was zero judgment. Like, if someone didn't show up or they didn't have their camera or whatever, there was zero judgment. And for me, that transformed my life because I took that example and I worked my ass off to get to that place where he is. And that's one of the greatest characteristics I think you have, buddy.
You know, I will tell you a quick story. So I do these classes, which is called influencing from the front. So I have professionals coming in. And I just had a class two weekends ago. So we had 20 people in a room go 30 hours, super intense. And I had a dentist, I had a chiropractor at a dentist. And on Sunday there was this, a recent chiropractor doing a talk, brand new, he just graduated. And his talk was. I mean, he didn't. How can I say that? Elegantly? Wasn't very powerful, polished. And he was nervous, right? But before, he didn't want to speak, but he was doing it. And then. So he spoke. Then I gave feedback. I gave feedback. Here's what I like about it, and I acknowledge him. And you have a lot of courage. I love that you put work. Because he had put work on a presentation structure. So I said all these things, right? And then later on, a week later, I had the call with a dentist who was my coaching client. He goes, man, you love everybody. You're not giving the honest feedback. I saw you coach the guy, kind of tease me, and I'm like, no, no, no. It's like, actually 100%. I thought the person had courage. You know why? Because every class that I do, I invite 10,000 people, and 20 show up. So guess what? The guy's courageous. Number two, he put the work. He wasn't a master of the work, but he put work. So by the time I was done, the dentist, like, he realized that's how we coach people. I could. I could say, man, there's a thousand things wrong. Or I could. And then if I. If I. Or I can say, you know what? Let's build your strength here. We have the courage. You put the work. And obviously, I told him how to elevate the results, obviously. But then a lot of people, they have a hard time. There's 10 things that happen. One of them is bad. They focus on the bad, man. I focus on the good. And I think was a lesson for him to realize that you always can find something good on people. Always, Always. And I train myself to do it, because as when you were coaching someone or leading someone, if I say, hey, man, that was terrible. Don't do it again, man, that person might be like, it's not for me. I literally could give up. And I'm like. And I know. And I know, like, how we go and approach people and give the personal feedback. By the way, three days later, I got a text from the. From the chiropractor saying, man, I did my first health lecture. I feel so good. It was amazing. Like, so now he's. And I know when he have more practice time, he'll be, you know, 100 times better. And so that's how we coach people. It's kind of like, I wasn't judging. Was like, I want to find something good to find that is authentic. That's authentic. And you can. Is always there. It is always there.
I need to hear that again. I. For me, Roberto, watching you for a long time, not just one session, literally, I think was a little longer Than a year and a half with us and watching him coach a whole team and give feedback, it was that. That for me is your greatest characteristic. I mean, you have a lot. But that for me as watching you and amazing. Okay, let's.
Some people have patience. They'll be like, they don't have patience. Right. I told you before, don't. You know, I'm like, totally.
I was checking the time because Roberto and I, sometimes we talk and we can go for literally 24 hours sometimes. Every time he says something, I'm like, we can go up for it. It's amazing. But I. I do have a question to come back to, but let's go.
To point number three. So we have a recap. Number one, influence yourself into action. Number two, influence. One on one. We talk about if you want to increase your influence, your charisma, how to, how to be present, to communicate with warmth. That's what I did when I was coaching the person. And then with expertise or knowledge, and then you have one too many. One to many is like what is kind of like public speaking presentations, webinars and videos. So this is kind of like how we influence groups as well.
Is one too many also?
Yeah, one too many. Because when you record, when you record out of social media is more than you speaking to a group, right? It's not even. Okay, okay, yeah, one too many. One. Not one too many, like drink too much, but like one. One person too many people. Right? So in that category, obviously there's different contexts, because context shapes communication. Because if you're doing a, let's say 90 second video is different than doing an hour webinar or four hour lecture. Right. It's just different. But then. So that's when I. My background, I. When I started working at Tony Robbins, I didn't have any experience speaking to groups. And then it was a journey for me. And I'll tell you that I feel as if you are a leader, if you are entrepreneur, if you have an expert, I really feel my heart. There's an amazing opportunity. Like, I live in South Carolina, you live in Buenos Aires. We're recording this. I worked with Vida for a year and you had doctors from all over, literally all over the world doing it. And not only we have the traditional opportunities to do events, seminars, if you're a business person, to speak to a board or to a group of managers, for example, employees. But also you can do virtual presentations. So for me, it's so exciting, this idea, this concept of virtual presentation. I've done eight, three day events online. And I feel like it just opened up a whole new level of opportunity. So if you are a leader, if you have a service, if you have a product for chiropractor, you gotta be super excited because not only you have the traditional way of doing talks in your practice, going to community, but also you can leverage the power of virtual presentations. And most people don't. So I am on a mission to change that.
Yeah, one thing, I'll never forget this. So I had sent Roberto Monaco My book 33 and this. We didn't even know each other yet. And some Cairo how he was telling me about you amongst other people. So I sent him the book and we get on the phone the first time and he goes, this is a great book, but why not? Why don't a lot of people know about it? And he like hit me like that, like, hey, I heard about you, but I don't see you like everywhere. And I was like, I don't know, I had this block to one to many. I was great in my practice with one to many or in groups, but not on a bigger level. So he really inspired me to take.
