Dr. Gary Sanchez explains how knowing your personal why makes actions more meaningful and effective. Your limbic brain drives decisions through feelings, while your neocortex provides rational justifications. Starting with your why lets you connect at the emotional level and actually influence how people decide.

Well, hello, I'm Dr. Gary Sanchez, and you're listening to beyond you'd why podcast, where we go beyond just thinking about or or talking about your why to actually discovering and living your why. Because when you know your why, what you do has more impact. It has more meaning, more focus, and more direction. Today's podcast is going to be about a really exciting subject for me. This might be the most important podcast that we do. This is going to be about why. The why. What happens when you use your why? What happens when you start with your why? What happens when you communicate based upon your why? What happens when you know the why of people that are close to you? How does that work? And why is it so powerful to know and use and live your why? So we're going to focus on that in this podcast. Now, in the last podcast, we talked about what is a why, and we talked about your why being that driving force inside you, right? We compared the guru why with your real why and the temporary reason for doing something versus that driving force inside you that's always there and always will be there to propel you forward. And so your why is that thing that you're compulsive about. I said my why is to find a better way. You know, I wake up thinking about a better way, and I go to bed thinking about a better way. It's just the way I think. It's how I'm hardwired. It's that thing that you can count on from me and I want to get noticed for. And so when we talk about why the why, though, we have to talk a little bit about brain biology. Brain biology. You know, now you're talking to a dentist who should be talking to you about teeth, and he wants to talk about brain biology. So let me make it simple. Let me make it easy for all of us to understand. Let's just talk about two parts of the brain. Imagine. Imagine two concentric circles. The outer circle of your brain being the neocortex and the inner circle of your brain being the limbic brain, right? So the neocortex, the outer part of your brain, can understand lots of rational and analytical thought and language. Now, what that means is it can understand lots of data, facts, figures, features are all understood at the level of the neocortex. But the neocortex doesn't drive behavior no. Decision making happens at the level of the neocortex. So somebody may tell you all the facts and figures and features of this new car that you're looking at, and you'll look at them and say, yeah, you know, I understand what you're saying. Let me think about it, Right? Have you ever said, let me think about it? You can understand what they're talking about, but it doesn't make you make a decision. Decisions come from the feelings that you have. And so when we talk about the limbic brain or the inner part of the brain, when you connect to somebody at the level of the limbic brain, that's the part of the brain that's responsible for feelings like trust and loyalty. Decision making happens at the level of the limbic brain, but interestingly, it doesn't have the capacity for language. So when you ask somebody, why do you love your spouse or significant other, right? They'll say, well, I don't know. You know, I just do. It just feels right. And then they'll justify it with the neocortex, well, they do this and they do this and they do this, or they don't do this and they don't do that and they don't do this. And that's why I love them. It's a feeling. You make a decision to buy something because it feels right, and then you justify it with the neocortex. The facts, figures, and features, right? People buy because it feels right. Then they justify it by the facts and figures and features after they've made that decision. So when you connect to somebody at the level of the limbic brain, you're connecting to that feeling part of their brain, and that's where decisions are made. In order to do that, you have to start with your why.

Your why is how you connect to the limbic brain. And the way you do that is by telling people what you believe. I believe. Whatever. When you tell someone what you believe, if they believe what you believe, then they agree with you. Then it feels right. Then they'll move in your direction, Then they'll buy your product, they'll buy your service, they'll join your cause when it feels right, and then they'll justify it with the neocortex. So when you want someone to like you, when you want someone to hire you, when you want someone to buy your product, buy your service, join your cause, you've got to connect at the level of the limbic brain. Remember that. That's really, really critical. You've got to connect at the level of the limbic brain, the inner part of the brain, the feeling brain, and then they justify it with a level with the neocortex, the facts, figures and features. Right? I'm sure you've done that yourself. When you go out to buy something, it's gotta feel right. If it doesn't feel right, you're not doing it. You can walk into a business that has all the credentials in the world, but if it doesn't feel right, you're walking right back out that door. When it feels right, you move in that direction. And then you justify it with the neocortex. I mean, think about a time when that's played out in your life and you'll see exactly what I mean. Right? It's gotta feel right. So that's why it's so important to know your why, to be able to articulate your why, to be able to say and use and start with your why. Because it allows people to connect to you completely differently. That's why it's so powerful. So today's podcast is going to be a little bit shorter because I want you to think about this. I really want you to understand the concept of using your why in everything you do, telling people what you believe. So let me give you an example of what I was talking about. I was at an event about six months ago, and we were sitting at tables of about 10, and the person that was hosting the event said, I'd like you to go around the table and tell everybody what you do about your business. And so this one lady, she was next to me, she said, well, I carry a very nice organic skin care line, and my favorite is the apricot and the peach, and it makes your skin feel really soft and it's competitively priced and if you want some, let me know, and I have some samples. And then I thought, huh, that's not particularly compelling. Don't really know a whole lot from that. But then we went around the table, and once we'd gone around the table, I stopped everybody and I said, hey, can we try that again? Can we start with why we're doing what we're doing and see if it feels any different to us? And so I coached Each of the people at our table in helping them develop their why and start with their why. So this same lady, we determined that her why was to contribute to a greater cause, to add value to other people. And so she said, I believe that when women have beautiful skin, it frees them up to be who they're meant to be and allows them to contribute and make a bigger impact. And so I help women have beautiful skin with this organic skincare line. My favorites are the apricot and the strawberry because they make your skin the smoothest and the finest. I've got samples here if you'd like to try them. But they'll improve your life by giving you great skin. Can you feel the difference? Can you see how that connected differently to you? That's what happens when you start with your why. When you tell people why you do what you do and what you believe. If they believe what you believe you're the right person for them, they'll connect with you and they'll justify the price and the hassles using their neocortex. So that's the power of knowing your why. That's why you want to start with your why, because of the way you can connect and the impact that you can have. In the next podcast, we are going to start delving into the nine whys. I want you guys to know the nine whys cold before we start bringing on guests so that you know who it is you're talking to and you can see it playing out in real time and in real life. So I can't wait to talk to you on the next podcast.
