I'm Dr. Rosalie Gula, a board-certified periodontist, and I'm going to be answering the questions I hear the most as a periodontist. Question: Can gums grow back? Unfortunately, gum tissue does not regenerate on its own, so no, gums cannot grow back. Once recession occurs, it usually stays that way. What is recession? It's whenever the gums pull back and it makes your teeth look longer. Basically, what's happening is the root is exposed, making your teeth sensitive to cold and hot foods. The good news is that I specialize in restoring that lost tissue with a gum graft, and that also helps prevent further recession.
