Welcome to the Wellness Dentist Podcast. I am Dr. Katie Toe. Hi, I'm Katie To, and I'm here today to share with you amazing special guests that we have on the show. She has been helping me to be a high performer, because I have so many dentists reach out to me and say, how you can do it all? And the secret is we don't do it all. We're actually gonna find clarity, high performers in life, and we can't wait to share with you and show you how we do that with Dr. Emily Lutrin. Dr. Emily Lutrin, welcome to the show.
Thank you so much, Katie. It's such a pleasure and an honor to be invited. Thank you for creating this platform so you can share your expertise with other people. And she asked me to introduce myself, but I told her 30 minutes were too short. So I'll give you the micro version, which is I'm the best mom in the world.
So I remember that really hit me when I first listened to you for the very first time, one of the events that you was a speaker at. And I was like, oh my God, that's it. I do all of this thing, you know, being a best dentist, I could be the best version of myself, daughter, wife, friends, but then of course the best job that I love is being the best mom. So that really hit me hard and that's when we started working together years ago. And so Dr. Latran, when we work with the patient, we notice that not just the physical bodies is important to them, how they feel, how they look, what they're spiritual, what is their purpose in life. And that's exactly what your expertise, you're actually helping people to be high performer. Can you share a little bit about why is it important for the wellness dentist or any dentist to be finding the wellness in their life and by being a high performer?
I think all of us know what's important in our life. We know it's family, we know it's our children, we know building assets, things like that. But once we get into the busyness of the day, we forget about it. So the key is to understand your core values and set the intention to achieve that every day, to have that clarity. Because a lot like you say, you're doing everything, right? Now, just doing everything, but not doing everything well may not be the best goal for yourself. Doing everything really well and to achieve the most important goals in your life and getting the support so you don't get burned out while you're achieving those goals is one of the things that I love the most. and I think we all have the freedom to do that if we choose to do that, and we make the plan to only do that. Sometimes, you know, as a mom, we say yes because school needs us to help with something, and as Asian, the extended family is gonna ask to be here, be there, do this, do that. We have to start with ourselves first, take care of ourselves, because once you take care of yourself, then you can take care of everybody else. and take care of your business.
Yeah, I hear a lot of dentists was like, well, but I take care of others first. That's what I'm here for. You know, I put the kid first, I put the family, the parents, the husband first. But by your coaching and teaching, I noticed that you said you all have to focus on your three bodies. You have your physical body, your emotional body, your spiritual body. Only when you well, you can take care of others. And so what is the one tip that the dentist can start taking care of themselves today?
For me, the one tip would be ask yourself if you're happy. Every day?
Every day you're asking yourself, are you happy?
Every day, every day in the morning? Checking in? Or in the evening, ask yourself if you're happy. One of my mentors, Sharon Lecter, she's the co-author of Rich Dad Poor Dad. She said her dad used to ask her every night, did you make a difference in someone's life today? Now, I think that's a question, a bigger question. It's more about fulfillment, right? Because you're happy. did you contribute to society? So ask yourself those important questions that is not just about you, it's about others also, but you know that you can do that until you take care of yourself. And I was just thinking when you were sharing that, if you're a woman, for example, think of the time when you were pregnant or you just had your child. Oh, by the way, you just had a baby.
I just had that, yeah.
But you know, really, that's the time that you really take care of yourself.
Right?
That's right.
You say, no, I need to stay in bed. I need to rest for my baby because I need to take care of my baby. But why don't we take that same mentality and apply that every day? You're not pregnant every day, but that's one of those times where a woman dentist really take care of herself because that's the only way to finish the pregnancy. Do that every day for yourself. Give yourself that little me time, whether it's a break. I know you teach yoga, meditation. or walk on the beach, give yourself five minutes where you can do anything, close your eyes and get recharged so you can take care of yourself throughout the day. And it's not, oh, I'm looking forward to my vacation next month. Why do we need to wait for the vacation to take care of ourselves?
That's a really good advice. And I think that since you can ask yourself that question every day, you can really check in and be present and not go down the wrong path.
Yes, because you need to own it.
That's right. That's right. And interesting that when we coaching a lot of dentists to be a biological, the first question I'm always asked them is like, what is your goal in life? What is your clarity? And they kind of shocked because they keep thinking, oh, I just need to make this in my practice. I need to do this, get my kid to college, really forget about themselves. And most important thing is they not finding clarity and you very, very stressed about that. You said you had to find clarity because that's all the actions gonna happen from there to make that become reality. So can you share with me a little bit what you find when you work with other coaching clients, especially dentists, what do you see in them and clarity? Most of them have it, most of them don't, and how do you help them to find the clarity in their life?
Thank you for that question. Is it okay if I share you?
Absolutely.
Yeah.
Open book here.
So the clarity part is knowing your core values and knowing who you are, because once you know that, then your goals make sense. So sometimes I coach a client and they say, I want a million dollar practice. Well, why a million? Why not five million? Everybody else wants a million. So that's where they start. Yeah. What is the net income from the million? How much time are you gonna have? And I don't know if you remember, I think when we first chatted, I asked you what you want, because you're already very successful. You have a seven figure practice or maybe ten figure. I don't remember, but, you know, I know you already a leader and you already very accomplished. I remember very clearly that you said you wanted to either pick up yoga or restart yoga. And I know for sure you said you want to play golf again. And now I'm always proud to say, Dr. Katie, she's already successful. Her goal was to play golf again. And then I show a picture the backside of Bailey with the golf bag.
Yeah.
With the golf bag. because you achieved that. That was the clarity. That was your goal and you got to your goal, right? And what it means is you got more time for yourself and you got more time for your family and you didn't have to leave the office wondering what are they doing over there? Can we still achieve those goals when I'm not there? And I think a lot of people, sometimes they leave early or they take time off, they have a little guilt Right?
Yes, mommy guilt is real.
Yeah, so guilt and regret, I should have done this, I should have done that. But if you're clear, this is what I want to do today, and please don't have a to-do list.
Don't have to-do lists.
And then you don't check off everything and you move it to next week. Have three things that you can remember, just three things. Accomplish those three things. Know who you need to help you get to those three things and leverage those people. and then I think you're gonna be just much happier, less stressed. And at the end of the day, it sounds better if you do two out of three things at 60%. Rather than a list of 10, then you did five, which is only 50%.
That's right. So I remember that advice, and I'm still doing that every morning. I get up and I said, oh, what is my three goals or priorities? Because if we look at our list, it's like going on forever, and it's just adding more every day.
Right.
So that three thing is still my go-to. And then I give that advice to a lot of my clients and then my colleague. So when you're working with others, high performers, yes, as a coach, what other thing that you noticed special, I would say features or characteristic of a high performer? What is it that you'd be like, if you have this and this, you are destined to be a high performer and you should go for it?
Well, I think, well, we already discussed clarity. Yes, okay. Being productive is another characteristic of a high performer. I think one of the big ones for me is courage. People set the goals, people say, I want to do this, that, and then they stop short because it's a big challenge. Sometimes they're in a business partnership and they really should split, right? I was talking to a doctor yesterday and they were in a partnership. They went to school together. The other partner was fourth year and she was the first year. And now as a practice grow up to a certain way, They really are equal partners because the four years difference didn't matter anymore so many years after school. And she needs to step up and start setting kind of a different structure where they 5050 in here because you can always say we're going to split the income, but when it comes to who's going to be the boss, who's going to run which part, there was a little clash of leadership, right? And it takes the courage You say, you know what? I'm taking this part, you're taking that part. Yes, we were like that four years ago, but we're not there anymore. We already moved on. So I think courage is very, very big. And for me, when I'm coaching high performer, the big part is to challenge them to have even more ambition. Because when you're a high performer, it's very easy to go through the motion.
That's right.
Right?
Yeah. Like, like you have three patients and they are full mouth and I'm done and I'm good.
Right?
So I think one time I was challenging you, well, how can we get the same income but work less days? And I think you cut one day or something like that and realized that you actually made more. And it's because we were challenged to tighten our schedule a little bit, to be a little bit more efficient or book even the bigger cases, right? So having that ambition, usually you need somebody to challenge yourself because you're already high performer. and have somebody keep you a little bit accountable. Because again, if you're already the leader, you're the CEO of your practice, you're the boss, you're already on the top, nobody's gonna challenge you. And so it takes an outside person like a coach or consultant, somebody who really care to challenge you, and as long as that challenge actually take you to fulfill your goals also.
Yeah, and you know, I know that a lot of our patients actually listen to the podcast, and they're asking me that when they come into the practice, I might really like become their life coach in some way because they're very vulnerable in front of you. They share their history, very intimate information. Sometimes they wouldn't share that with their family members. But when they're in front of you and they trusted you and they look at you as their healthcare provider, they want to get well and you can see right through it. It's not just physical, it's also emotional and spiritual. And so for me, I Always tell all my dentist friends and coaching clients that when you become a high performer, it's not just for you. It's also for people around you. Your team members can also become high performers. Your coaching team also.
Yes, yes, because that's just the part about communication. Imagine if you're on top of the mountain by yourself, right? That's no fun. It's better to climb up there with a bunch of people. And sometimes when you're talking to anybody, They can see the passion right through you. You may be giving them advice, but it's really something that maybe they forgot to do. They know that they're supposed to do it, but they haven't been doing it. And congratulations on branding yourself as a wellness dentist. So I wouldn't be surprised if your patients come in and they start asking you about other questions. Yes. Because that's all part of wellness.
Yes. You might tell them all about it.
Yeah.
Right, right.
And.
You know, and It's great because that's what makes, I think that's what makes us so blessed to be the dentist because we have that freedom. Since we don't work for the hospitals, you know, as a physician, we have the freedom to say, I'm just going to spend this extra five minutes or however many more minutes because Mrs. Jones, she just need this little tip and I just need to tell her this little story of somebody similar to her who got to that next level of wellness. and that day in that hour, whatever that appointment is, you know that you changed Mrs. Jones' life.
For real? Yes. We extend that in our practice every day. And patients will come back and say, you know what? That three goal that you're telling me, that water that you're telling me to drink, that consistency, that accountability that you set for me, that really helped me to get to the next level because I would struggle for years just to get well when I have all the tools and the knowledge, but I could not have that consistency. I didn't have someone to say, I'm not giving you more homework until you get this done. and so our patient appreciated that and that's coming from the high performer principle. So if you cannot be high performers, then you cannot help your team, especially you cannot help your patient. Even though so many patients come to us already have all the knowledge and the tool, but they didn't have that person to keep them really accountable and give them enough and the right support for them to get to the next level of wellness.
So yeah, look at it as a ball game. I'm not like a ball game person, but you know, people get on the field, that's life and How do you achieve those goals? Whether you're as a soccer goal or you're throwing a football, right? There's a coach with some strategy, with some framework. Follow this and we'll win. And of course, you can just go through life in whichever way. But imagine if everybody just cared a little bit more, have a little bit more intention wanting to create some impact. Like you're changing people's life as a whole, right? I'm just trying to get rid of whiners, you know, and complainers, right? Just that getting rid of the negativity and the negative, because sometimes we don't realize that we're bringing that and we're spreading it everywhere else.
That's right.
And be more happy, be more happy with what you have and what you're able to create. And sometimes you be happy because you bring happiness to other people. So I think that's the role of a coach is to help people see all of those positive things and to focus on those and not living life with regrets. I should have done with the, it's the could have, would have, you know, those kind of people, the butt people, right? They need to shrink the size of their butt because I want to do this, but I don't have that. No, you're going to do it right now with what you have. And eventually you get to where you can do it more easily. But it has to be the intention and it could be little things. but it's the little things that make the big changes.
Yeah.
So is that true to say that no matter you, the wellness dentist, the patient, the team members, no matter you want it or not, you have influence on somebody that show up in your life, your friends, your kid, your spouse, your family members. So why not just be the best version of yourself so you can help others instead of go through the motion. Right, right.
And that's one of the thing I always ask when I run my action to win seminars is who's your role model and who do you want to be a role model for? Because the moment you think you're the role model, you're gonna sit up a little bit more straight, you're gonna walk with confidence. You know, your kids are watching you, right? Oh yeah, very much. So as a mom, you're automatically the role model. But what if you walk into a room like you're hosting your seminar right now for people interested in biological dentistry, you walk into the room, if you're in front of the room, you're already an influencer and they don't even know who you are quite yet. They could have Googled you or whatever, but positioning yourself in a particular way by doing certain things, that's creating influence. So if you're patients or anybody for that matter, if you're doing a podcast, you write a book, you speak, your patients will know and you're not like the dentist next door in the same building or across town. because you're doing more than just the four walls in your office. And thinking about influence just because you can change other people's perspective. And that's the same thing like you're sitting in the chair and telling the patient, remove the amalgam.
Right?
Or you have more than just scroUted teeth, you have apnea.
Airway issue, yes.
Right? All of those things, and the patient listens to you, that's influence and we're blessed because we really have a degree, we have the Y Lab code, right? But what about the words? What kind of advice are you giving? What are you encouraging people to do that all create the influence?
Yeah.
And I like that you share in the past that if you actually go through the process to be high performers and have the intention and making the impact, when you're talking to someone that looking for some of that guidance, they actually know and feel that you went through it yourself. You actually walk the talk and not just lecture them. Because a lot of patients was like, well, I come in and the doctor lecture me about not doing this, not doing that, versus you will sit me down and say, I know the struggle of, say, not eating, you know, sugar, dairy, gluten. Because I was struggling with that, too, especially when I'm traveling and, you know, speaking to do all that. It's hard to eat clean and healthy when you're not at home cooking your own food. So when you're the one that go through that journey, they can feel that you feel their pain. And if you success, it's an inspiration for them to be able to do the same. And if you slip and you said, okay, just get back on. Yes. And that forgive the forgiveness that you give to yourself and your patient and the patient can see that grace, they more likely to be successful in their wellness journey.
Well, people say the struggle is real, right?
It is so real. Every single day. Yes.
Personally, for me, I think you should be authentic, meaning be true to yourself and be in alignment with what you believe. I think we all know the doctor who smoked, right? And you already know that you're not supposed to be smoking. And sometimes people don't know because you may be doing that behind the door or whatever, but can you be truthful to yourself? And I think when you're sharing, if you didn't go through something like that yourself, let's say you're coaching somebody or you're trying to give somebody advice. Well, then tell it as a story. You know, I know a friend who did this. Obviously, when it's your personal experience, they can tell. I have patients who come in and say, I can tell that you like dentistry. You can tell after 29 years. You can totally tell. And I have the gray hair to, you know, to prove. Because that authenticity will come through. People may or may not tell you, but it will come through. And in high performance, We really emphasize living your best self. If you're not quite your best self yet, we're always a work in progress.
That's right.
Right.
But we believe in that, we do that, and we help others do the same thing.
Awesome. I have this question all the time. That's a Latran. People was like, who's is work you working with? Who's get you on this high performing path? So how's other dentists that looking for this kind of guidance can find you and can have a chat with you?
You know, I, like I said earlier, I want to get rid of negativity. I want to get rid of wine. So I'm pretty active in social media, in different dentist groups. I'm on LinkedIn, Instagram, not so much. But, you know, I'm on social media. Anyone can really reach out and, and message me. They can go to my website is Dr. Emily L. T. R. A. N. So D-R-E-M-I-L-Y-L-E-T-R-A-N or I would challenge them to take a high performance quiz and you can take the word action 2021 to 26786. That would be a 10 question quiz. You know, take the quiz and see what your score is. The other day I gave that to during my seminar and I think toward the end of the day, one of the doctor come up to me and say, I'm stuck on your quiz. And I said, what do you mean you're stuck on your quiz? Because it's from 1 to 10. You know, just rate yourself and she go, which one is the higher? And because sometimes people think number one, right? And I told another friend and he said, did you specify that 10 is the highest? And I said, no, I just use common sense.
Right?
But common sense is not common practice.
Not common practice.
Yeah. And some people look into it too much. So sometimes when you have somebody as a coach, just give you a different perspective and you can just see through things faster and you can accomplish things faster. So I hope to see a couple more quizzes coming in. And it's just for yourself. You can see where you are and you can make the decision from there. But the high performance part that we're talking about is not about money. The question is not about money.
It's not.
Yeah, it's about who you are as a person, how you support others, your communication, your energy, all of that that making you a whole person.
And I can tell you that we still do those quizzes weekly, monthly, because once you learn how to check in with yourself and know where you're going, it's very easy to kind of get yourself out of that, go through the motion. Because we used to that. We used the routine. We used to, you know, oh, I already know how to drive to work. I already know how to do all this in the office. But when you are checking with yourself, you will realize that, oh, my gosh, I need to get my courage, my productivity, all of this high performance trait that Dr. Emily was talking about. So again, you can reach out to Emily online, social media, message her, but I would say take the quiz because that's what the first step to Hydrow. Where are you on your journey to.
Be a high performer? Again, thank you so much for creating this platform and congratulations on just having the baby, Apple. Yes. You know, it's those micro moments, it's those accomplishment that makes a lot of difference. It's never about the money, it's never about the fame, right? because I think the very first thing is to achieve that personal happiness and you can get to it faster if you're a high performer.
And that personal happiness is contagious, trust me. I remember Dr. Latraverse said, you don't think that you're going to coaching these people later on, but people are just going to come to you and ask for help. And that's when you get that calling, right? That's the legit. You didn't set out to helping others. You just say, I want to help myself, my team and my patient. Then when that radiance and that positive energies become contagious and patient can see it and other dentists can see it. They will come knock on your door and you now can make a huge bigger impact in other people practice. So thank you for following us and watching the shows. And I can't wait for you to see the next episode. If you have not subscribed and follow us, please do so at the Wellness Dentist podcast.
