Dr. Katie To explains how intraoral scanners and 3D printers are replacing messy dental impressions with digital models that never break or get lost in the mail. Dentists can now print accurate models in-house instead of waiting for external labs.

I mentioned earlier, we don't have to take that goopy impressions and the patients are like gagging on it. We're sending it in through the mail. Maybe it gets lost. Technicians pours it up in the stone model and then sometimes it breaks upon coming back. No more of that. We do 3D intraoral scanners so that we will always have that scan. We don't have to worry about it getting lost years later. If the patient comes back and they're like, hey, something is off or I need to do something, then we'll have that scan from previously and we can always reprint that, refer back to that and always have that. So it's not something that we're gonna lose. We also have an in-house 3D printer, which is really cool too. We don't have to rely on the lab to print it out, the designs, and have things done much more accurately and more precise.
