A cardiologist asked Dr. Katie To to scan a patient's teeth with a 3D cone-beam CT. The scan found a root-canal infection the cardiologist suspected was affecting the patient's heart. Dr. To notes dental school never taught her to read these scans like a radiologist does.
The cardiologist called me and said, I need you to scan him for root canals because that's the last thing we didn't check. And we want to see if that's the reason. Well, you know what? On the 3D CBCT, that's what we found, the infection. And we evaluate root canal tooth with the 3D CBCT imaging. And if you do a 3D scan called CBCT, cone beam CT, you have to have a radiologist report. Because again, they did teach— they did not teach me how to read blood work in dental school. And they did not teach me how to read a CBCT like a radiologist in dental school.
