The number one most common question that I hear is, what exactly is a periodontist? Most people don't know what we do until you get referred to us. Basically, what a periodontist is, they are a dentist, but they go to school for an additional 3 years, so they get specialty training that focuses on the gums the bone surrounding the teeth, and dental implants. We treat gum disease, gum recession, bone loss, we place dental implants, we perform gum grafting, and help save teeth that might otherwise be extracted. Think of your general dentist as your primary care physician and your periodontist as a specialist for the foundation that supports your teeth. Healthy gums are just as important as healthy teeth.
