I'm Dr. Rosalie Gula, a board-certified periodontist, and I'm going to be answering the most common questions I hear as a periodontist. Question: Why do my gums bleed when I brush? Healthy gums should not bleed. Bleeding is usually one of the earliest signs of inflammation caused by bacteria accumulating around the gum line. Many people stop brushing because it bleeds, but that's actually the opposite of what you're supposed to do. Gentle brushing and flossing and a professional cleaning often improve the problem. If the bleeding continues for more than a week or two, it's worth having Evaluated.
