A former principal argues that school leaders should actively share their building's wins through newsletters, websites, and social media. Highlighting positive outcomes shapes how outsiders see your school and lifts staff morale, even when the data tells a messier story.

Leaders, I want you to be intentional about sharing your story of your building or district, and let me tell you why. As a former middle school and high school principal, both of very large suburban districts, I quickly learned this value of sharing our story. I wanted to celebrate all of the wonderful successes and the things that were going on in our building. So let's take, for instance, data. Our data had wonderful results and outcomes. However, if someone from the outside is looking, they might see that spot where it wasn't so wonderful. But I always wanted to celebrate the positive things and the successes that we had. I did this by sharing newsletters as well as information on our website and social media platforms. So leaders, be intentional, share your story, and celebrate success.
