Easy Grocery Shopping Tips You Need to Know!

Dr. Noah St. John and Babette teach grocery shopping by sticking to the store's outer perimeter for whole foods and choosing "God-made" over processed options. They show how to batch-cook in bulk, freeze portions, and use creative hacks like turning juice pulp into muffins and canned goods into weights.

Hi everybody, Noah St. John here, and today for the Afformations Best Self Challenge, we're going to show you how to shop. I get a lot of questions about this every day from people who say, what do I get at the grocery store? So we are here at Walmart.
Go ahead.
And I'm going to show you, and Babette and I are going to show you exactly what to get. Now there are 2 things to remember when you go shopping. The first thing that you need to remember is, and it's very simple, this is the only rule you need to remember, and that is to shop on the outside of the grocery store. As long as you stay on the outside, you're good. Okay, now why? What is on the outside of a grocery store? Well, as you see here, we have produce, we have fruits and vegetables. Right? Those are always on the outer part, usually right when you come in, when you walk in. Then you also have meats and dairy and nuts and things like that. So that's the first rule. The second rule to remember, this is very simple, is if God made it, you're good. If man made it, you're bad.
Okay?
Not gonna work.
Okay?
So God, good.
Man, bad.
You know, I'm teasing about that, but what I'm really not teasing because Because look, anything man-made has got to be full of really bad carbs. So we're going to be talking to you today about proteins, carbs, and fats, and we're going to be talking throughout this series about how to look at your proteins, your carb intake, the good carbs and the bad carbs, and then the fats, and those are really, really important. Alright, so we're going to have a lot of fun today. So now I'm going to turn it over to Babette. She's going to show you exactly what we get. So remember, stay on the outside.
Alright.
Watch out for those sharks that are on the inside. Alright, we'll see you in a minute.
Hi, this is Babette here, and like Noah said, we're on the outside, we're in the produce, and what we do is we're going to get fruits and vegetables for one we juice and then the vegetables for soup. So we're looking at grapes, and we particularly like these. These are the red grapes. They're seedless. Looks great.
Put that in there. Macintosh apples, very nice. Some soup, cauliflower. He's celebrating. Really healthy.
Nice.
Oh, I gotta say something.
We got the beets.
My mom would always make beets for us kids. I hated it. And then as I got older, I realized that beets are very, very good for you. But I can't eat them. I have to drink them. They're great and juicy. We usually go to Sam's Club because Sam's Club has a great big quantity. And what we do is to save time because we're busy, and what we do is we cook in advance, like for the week. We go and we buy, like Noah likes chicken, He likes the dark meat. I like the white meat. And so what we do is we get by the quantity and then we cook it. I cook it one day and then it's, you know, we put it in the freezer and then we pull it out when needed. And also pork chops and pork.
Okay, so we're not really going to get any meats today, but we're just showing them the meats that we like. Okay, so we're staying on the outside here, staying on the perimeter.
Oh, hey Noah.
Yeah.
Why? Because what's in, what's in the aisles?
It's the sharks.
Oh my God.
The sharks.
You don't want to go there.
So be careful. That's where all the bad carbs are. Right in there is all the bad carbs. Why? Because that's all man-made, all man-made. That's where you want to stay away from.
Okay, but I gotta say something.
As much as possible.
Okay, what I want to say is, remember I said I was watching that last week was my carb intake, and and that's what one of them is. But one thing I have to get in that aisle is hot chocolate. I'm not a coffee drinker.
Loves her hot chocolate.
Yeah.
So all right.
So we're gonna go in and get one shark. All right. Well, good luck.
So, but just to tell you. That even though you have your carbs, it's just the quantity. I used to drink 6 cups of hot chocolate a day. Now I cut back and I'm using my affirmations of why am I going to cut down on my carbs. I still love them.
Why is it so easy?
Why is it so easy? What did I say?
To cut down on my carbs. You said, why am I going to cut down on my carbs?
Sorry, a little nervous here.
Okay, doing great, baby.
I'm on the sand.
I'm going to get chicken cuz that has to be the broth, right, for the soup, right?
Then what is that you're getting again?
Chicken.
Chicken what?
Bouillon. Helps the broth.
Oh, okay.
Helps the soup.
Okay.
And also vegetable that goes in the soup.
All right, sounds good. Now remember, there's more Meats and stuff like that on the perimeter, so we're still right here. We're good. No sharks.
Right now, what you can do if you like canned goods. Yeah. Or you know how like did you ever whoops?
Oh.
Now did you ever watch did you watch the movie Karate Kid? Really, it should be called Kung Fu Kid, and he. He said, Mr. Han said that in everything you do, it's kung fu. Well, in everything that you do could be exercise. Like, let me get some cans. I got the cans and you use them as weights. See? You don't need weights or to go to the gym if you don't want to, if you don't have time. Use your time in the grocery store and make that be your exercise.
That's right.
Stretching, see? Exercise, pulling. There. So, you don't get these, but you can use your hands as your exercise. What we do with the juice, I mean, we drink the juice, but with the pulp, I use and make muffins as a carb for Noah. So I'll show you how to do that next next time. Now we're in the dairy section.
Okay, so now what are we getting here in the dairy section? Okay.
All right, sounds good.
So what do we do with our eggs? Why are you getting so many eggs?
Well, boil them for salmon for.
Which one is it?
Berry vanilla.
That is one healthy looking cart, huh?
Yeah.
I like strawberry. Noah likes blueberry. And I like peach too. We both like peach.
So what's the purpose of yogurt again? Tell us real loud.
It's good bacteria that goes in and it emulsifies your intake and helps you to digest. Okay, hello, this is Bebe again. And what we're going to do is, well, what Noah and I always do is we have a race because we fill up water and it saves money what we drink. Drinking water, and anyway, he has one side. I have the other. We make it fun, and that's what you have to do. You have to make going to the grocery store fun, even with your kids or your spouse. But anyway, here's what we do, right?
All right, here we go. You're almost there. Almost there. Oh, that one went over.
I won.
Very funny.
Wow, that was exciting, wasn't it? Yes, alright, well Noah, again, we're almost done, we're at our very last stop, we've made a complete perimeter of the outside of the store. Notice we started here in produce, went to meats and dairy, and now we're going to end up with nuts right here. Now nuts are a hugely, very, very important source of fat, healthy fat. You need fats every single day, there are 5 essential fatty acids that the human body needs every day. Ironically, Americans are not eating enough fat and they're getting fatter. And why is that? It's because fats don't make you fat, it's carbs that make you fat, okay? So those bad carbs that we avoided today. So you need carbs, but you got to make sure you eat the right ones, and those are the ones made by nature, alright? So make sure you have enough nuts. We're going to put these pecans, pecans, in the muffins that Babette makes from the juice.
And the pecans are great for the brain.
So it all works together, it's a beautiful thing. So make sure you eat enough nuts. I also love cashews and almonds. So make sure you're eating enough nuts, and we got a lot more great stuff to show you. But hope you enjoyed this trip today to the grocery store. Make sure when you go to the grocery store, shop on the outside and watch out for those sharks. Alright, we'll see you next time, everybody.
Bye-bye.
Bye-bye.
