This is the Jenny McCarthy Show on SiriusXM Stars.
It's, it's lady talk.
Welcome back to the Jenny McCarthy Show. I'm Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg. I'm so excited to welcome him back, Noah St. John, and his new book, Power Habits: The New Science for Making Success Automatic.
Hi, Noah. Hey, Jenny. Great to be back with you.
I know. Very excited to hear about your new book. What led you to write this one?
Well, you know, Jenny, I've been doing this for over 20 years, over 2 decades. I started my college dorm room in 1997 with $800 and a book on how to do HTML. HTML, and since that time, you know, we've helped people make millions of dollars, but also overcome addiction and quit smoking and just really grow their businesses and lots of things like that. So people kept saying to me, "Hey Noah, I hear you're the guy that everybody goes to after they go to all the gurus out there and they're still stuck. I hear you're the guy that helps people double triple their business. I hear you're the guy that everybody helps that you help everybody to get unstuck. And so, can you can you just help me get unstuck? Can you help me get my goals faster?" And so what I realized is I got to put all this in a book, you know, because I've been teaching this to my coaching clients for over 2 decades. And like I said, helping people make millions of dollars and have amazing results. So I said, you know what, I want to get into a very easy to understand, easily digestible, accessible book format that anybody can use so that they can understand and utilize and start to really use these power habits of unconsciously successful people.
Yeah, because we do hear, you know, from, you know, back in the days when The Secret was around, the law of attraction and All these messages that they almost turn into mixed messages and overwhelming. And no wonder why people have come to you saying, I'm still not gaining success. What am I doing wrong? What was that collective block that most people have?
Well, you know, you mentioned— it's so funny you mentioned The Secret because, you know, everybody in that movie is good friends of mine. And so, you know, what they said in The Secret was really well packaged, which is if you just think about money, then money pours in from the ceiling. I'm like, Great, I don't know what planet that works on, but it's not the planet Earth. You know? 'Cause on the planet Earth, we have to do this annoying thing called work, right?
That's right, action.
But that doesn't sell, right? What sells is, hey, just think about money and it pours. It's like, oh, no wonder they sold 30 million DVDs. And I'm not speaking out of school, 'cause like I said, everybody in that movie knows the whole thing.
Exactly, I bought a case, so I get it.
Right, right. So I literally have people at my live events or when I'm doing keynote speeches, you know, or at my own live events called, we have an event called Freedom Lifestyle Experience, and you know, it's a 2-day transformational event. But what people come up to me, they say, hey Noah, I watched The Secret 37 times and I'm still not a millionaire. I'm like, hmm, I wonder why. You know, it's, I'm not kidding. And it's funny but sad. It's like, okay, we gotta do this thing called inner game and outer game work. Inner game is everything that happens between your ears that you can't see directly, but it affects everything that you do. And then we also have to have the outer game strategies, right? The systems, you know, all the marketing, sales. The putting it into action. Exactly, right? So it's kinda like a house, right? A house has 2 components, right? It has the outer component, which is what you see on the outside. It's like, you know, oh, there's a house. But without the inner game, it's like electricity. It's like having, you know, a building with no electricity. Then it's like, it's a little bit cold in there in the wintertime, a little too hot in the summer. So that's, it's like our lives or your business or, you know, your career, even your relationships or health. I mean, anything has that inner game and outer game component. And that's what really, that's what Power Habits is really about.
So for the women and men that are listening that are like, you know what, there's so many more people that are wanting to start their own business. I know a handful of close friends that are just opening up their own like spas and stuff like that. But there's also people that are just scared or have a fear of success, have a fear of failure.
That's right.
How do— what do you say to those people that are, have that desire, but are too afraid to take both feet off the island?
Right, absolutely. So first of all, have your friends call me, have your friends email me. You've got all my contact info. Go to my website.
Read the book first.
Read the book. That's what I'm gonna tell them. Go to noahstjohn.com and just contact me. That's number one. Number 2 is you're absolutely right. So many people have, what's so ironic is that they have the fear of success on one hand, but the fear of failure on the other. So it's really, they're totally stuck. And so what's so funny is what I've identified is what does stuck actually mean? 'Cause that's another thing people say to me at my live events, my keynote speeches. They say, hey Noah, I hear you're the guy that helps people get unstuck. What does that actually mean? And how can I get unstuck? And so what I heard this so many times, Jenny, I just heard it over and over and over again for the last 2 decades. And so I finally broke it down. I said, what does stuck actually mean?
Yeah.
And what it really means is four elements: there's time, energy, relationships, and money. Right? So you can be stuck in you know any of those areas. So when you have the time, the energy, the relationships, and the money that you really desire, that's when you're living what we call a freedom lifestyle. That's we call our live events of freedom lifestyle experience because I wanted people to have that experience. But the point is that you need to look at whether you are stuck in time, meaning are you saying to yourself constantly? Man, I wish I could X, but oh, I just don't have the time, right? And what I teach people all the time is that time isn't relevant, right? You, me, Bill Gates, Mark Cuban, Warren Buffett, we all have the same 24 hours. It has nothing to do with time. Time is irrelevant. It's a great excuse that keeps people stuck. But what I point out to people is imagine you're going through your day and suddenly the phone rings and you get a phone call from a family member and they say, hey, you gotta get to the ICU right now. Someone in the family is just in a really bad accident. You gotta get over to the ICU. It's a real emergency. And would you say to that person, I can't make it today. How's next Thursday? You know what I'm saying? So, so what I just proved is that time is not relevant. It's all about your systems.
You're right.
And it's amazing how many excuses that we can come up with ourselves, within ourselves, and justify them.
That's right. That's absolutely right. And see, that's what I call your head trash, right? So that's a big, big reason why the Power Habit System is so powerful and transformational because see, your head trash is the voice in your head that says, I can't do it because dot, dot, dot. And then you just fill in the blank. And this is what we hear all the time at our live events and in my speeches, my keynote speeches. You know, hey Noah, I'd love to do this. Oh, I want to start my own business, but I don't have the time. I don't have the money. I don't have the education. I didn't go to the right college. I'm married. I'm divorced. I have kids. I don't have kids. I'm a Martian. I mean, you know, whatever it is. And so we just hear these excuses all the time. But here's the key that I want everyone listening to this program to understand right now. This is really powerful. Everything after the word because is what you will fight to the death.
To—
because you believe it. You will defend your limitations to the death. And it's crazy. It doesn't make any sense, right? Because we don't want these limitations, but we want to make ourselves right. We humans have an infinite capacity to make ourselves right. If you don't believe me, put a Democrat and a Republican in the same room and watch a political speech, right? And they're not watching the same speech. They're watching the same speech, but they're not watching the same speech. You follow me? A New York Yankees fan and a Red Sox fan watching a Red Sox-Yankees game. They're not watching the same game.
It's attachments. We're attached to our own bullshit.
Exactly. You got it. And so that's, I call it head trash just to be polite, but yes, you're absolutely right. But the point is your head trash is that voice in your head that says, I can't do it because, and whatever happens after the word because is exactly what you have to watch out for. I just proved to everybody listening to this program that time is irrelevant, that you, you, you have the time. It's not about time. See, this is a great quote that I want everybody to really pay attention to. This is so important. When I, when I first heard this, I'm like, wow, that is so true. And that is, We don't rise to the level of our goals. We fall to the level of our systems. We don't, because we all have big goals, right? We all want, you know, I want $1 million. I want an island in the Caribbean. I mean, you know, that's great. You want big goals. That's awesome. But the point is, without the systems, and that's why we call it, you know, in the Power Habits book, I teach you about the inner game systems, which is, as I said, everything that happens between your ears. You can't see it directly, but it affects everything you do. For example, at my speeches or at my live events, I often say, to my audiences, right now, tell me one area where your beliefs don't affect you. And they go, uh, mm. And I go, exactly! Your beliefs affect everything, right? Your beliefs affect your health, your relationships, your finances, your business, your social, everything, right? There's no place your beliefs don't affect you, but you can't see them directly. You only see the effects of them. That's why it's so hard for people to change because it's like trying to move the furniture in a room that's totally dark, right? You just can't see what you're doing.
Right.
So that's why using the Power Habit System, people are able to get that to The surface level, to the conscious level where you can actually turn the light on and go, oh my gosh, I didn't even know I was saying that to myself. And that's when you can make these transformational changes.
I cannot wait to read this book. I'm not kidding. I'm gonna go front and back and call you and stalk you.
Please do.
Diagnose me. Okay, diagnose me in a situation, 'cause I'm sure people can relate to this. So there's this kind of like business I wanna do, but this is how I feel. Do you ever walk in a room in your house or your whole house and it's a disaster and you're like, I gotta clean. And there, you don't even know where to start because it's so messy. So then you wind up not cleaning, not doing anything. Because there's so many—
And you do something else. Exactly. I absolutely talk about that in the book, Jenny. That's exactly right. You just gave the definition of procrastination, right? Procrastination literally comes from the Latin word tomorrow, right? The procrast is actually from the Latin word tomorrow. So when you are procrastinating, you are tomorrowizing. Have you ever noticed that tomorrow is where 99% of all of our accomplishments live? I'll do it tomorrow, right? Meanwhile, I'm watching Netflix and, you know, got it. Okay, cool. I'll do it tomorrow. But again, see, we have— I call it the gap of good intentions. I really want to write that book. I really want to start my business. I really want to clean my house. I really want to lose weight, but I'll get around to it later. Okay, that's fine. I mean, you know, I'm not here to beat anyone up, but I'm just saying, listen, once you have the systems in place— I know I keep saying it, but it's so important. Again, because we don't rise to the level of our goals, we sink to the level of our systems. So once you have the inner game systems and the outer game systems in place, Then you can start to make those changes. So for example, one of the things you can do, using your example, Jenny, about cleaning the house, right? Something we can all relate to, right? And who enjoys cleaning a house? Not many people, right? Oh, this is fun. Can we clean the house now?
We like the effect.
Exactly right. That's right. That's right. So actually, but what's so funny is that actually goes back to, in my book, I talk about the habit loop. The habit loop is 5 steps. The first step is a cue or trigger. That means you think about doing that thing you want to do, right? clean a house, write a book, start a business, whatever it might be. You think about doing it. That's the trigger. The second thing is the routine. It's what you do once the trigger is triggered. And for most people, it's like, ah, I think I'll do something else.
Right?
You think about that thing you want to do. Right. And I'll do something else. Right? You see what I mean? And why do you do that? Because we feel safe. That's the third element of the habit loop. We have to feel safe. See, the brain's job, the brain's main job, and I'm talking about the lizard brain, the one in the back of the brain, not your frontal cortex, which is where higher thought processes happen. But in the back of the brain, its basic job is to make sure you don't die. That's literally its job, right? And so it's like, okay, I know I'm not— it's just saying, okay, don't die today. Let's make sure we keep this person not dead. And what's a great way to be not dead? Don't go after something you're afraid of. Don't go after something that might hurt you, with quotes around it, right? Cause you pain, right? And then you have a craving for safety and that, you know, the brain has to feel safe. And then the— but here's the tough part is that 5th element, which is belief. Every one of us is carrying around a belief. And you know what the default human belief— and Jenny, I've taught this to literally tens of thousands of people all around this planet, all over the world, men, women, children, teenagers, CEOs, celebrities, athletes, you know, working moms, people from all walks of life. And you know what the default human belief is? I'm not enough. I'm not enough.
Mm-hmm.
And that is— and guess what? keep saying to yourself, I'm not enough. It's, I can't do it because. I can't do it because I'm not enough. I'm not enough, I can't do it because. You see what I mean?
Yeah.
And it is that spiral that is so hard for people to get out of. That's why when you start to use my Power Habit System, people go, wow! And they just have incredible breakthroughs like doubling, tripling their income, starting a new business, writing their book, quitting smoking after 20 years. I mean, I just got an email from one of my clients and he said, Noah, I've been trying to quit smoking, quit drinking for 17 years. I used your system. In 60 days, I quit all my addictions.
Is it the system in this book for quitting smoking too?
Well, yes, you can use it for anything. Because remember, what did I just say a moment ago? Where don't your beliefs affect you? Where don't your habits affect you? They affect everything. So whether you want to quit smoking, whether you want to attract the love of your life, whether you want to write a book, whether you want to start your business, grow your business, that's why we've helped so many people. That's why, you know, Jenny, I'll help you get your business started. Get your friends over to me. We'll get them going. I mean, you know, I've been on this— this is my 4th time on your show.
I know, I know.
I love it.
And you are right on this book. You are on this way. And you know, you were so sweet to give me such a wonderful testimonial. And it's so, it's such an honor to be back on your show again. And you know, hey, next time make sure we're here together, right?
You're good. You're good at what you do. I will say that. You're really good at what you do. And I know that more and more people want this, you know, and why is it that people sometimes have problems accepting money into their lives? Why is that when we all want it, but why do they have trouble accepting it?
You, you absolutely just said it. We want, see, we humans want things that are like, we want more money, right? We want more time, more energy, better relationships, more money. What do those things actually represent? If you really boil it down, those things, they all represent one thing, and that is change. Change from your current situation, right? So if, you know, if I make a million dollars tomorrow, I change, right? If I lose 20 pounds, I change, right? So there's change. But guess what we fear? What is it we human beings fear? We fear change. So the very thing we desire is the very thing we So it's that same part of the brain you're talking about. Yes, exactly. And that's why we've got to raise it to the conscious level, right? Because if it stays in the subconscious, you have literally no chance. In fact, that's where I got that analogy from that I shared earlier. It was actually from one of my coaching clients. And he said, Noah, doing this work with you, it's like you turned a light on in a room that had been dark my whole life. And I thought about it. I said, that's exactly what it's like. Because if you're trying to move the furniture in a room that's totally dark, you're going to just bang your shins. You can't even see what you're doing. Does that mean you're incapable of making change? Of course not. You can see when somebody turns the light on and go, oh, I didn't know the coffee table was right there. No wonder I keep banging my chin. So that's the whole point of the— well, not the whole point, but a big, big part of this Power Habit system is realizing that, wait a minute, we can make conscious choices. But the first step of transformation is always awareness. So you've got to become aware of what's holding you back. And that's, you know, going back to your question about money, that's— of course, we all want more money, right? But there's so much head trash out there about that. Carl Jung called it the collective unconscious. Like, money's bad, money's evil, rich people are mean. Right, all this head trash. No one, you know, it's like rich. If rich people are selfish and I want to be rich, well, I don't want to be selfish.
So I got like because I grew up Catholic and you know rich people were going to burn in hell.
Exactly.
Hello, I grew up Catholic too, so I know exactly. I was I was in the same thing. So exactly right. It took me years and years to overcome that head trash about wait a minute, I'm allowed to make money. And you know, but that's that's why I want to save people years. You know, by giving them the system that it took me twenty years to figure out.
I mean, you're so good at it, Noah St. John.
Thank you.
I can't— I'm, I'm going to take you up on it. I'm going to finish this book. I'm going to apply it to my, um, I have an autism after-school program I want to start. So I'm going to read the book and then have you help me and we'll have you back on and talk about the success.
And you call me, right? You're going to call me.
I'm going to call you, Noah St. John. I'm going to call you. Power Habits. I know you guys are buying it right now on Amazon. Power Habits. The new science for making success automatic. You can buy it probably where any books are sold, and book powerhabitsbook.com there. Noah St. John, thank you so much. I'm taking you up on that offer.
Boom!
All right.
I hope you come back soon. Thank you for your help.
We'll be right back. Check my nails, baby. How you feeling? Woo child!
Tired of the foolish.
Gone dust your shoulders off.
What was that collective block that most people have?
Well, you know, you mentioned, it's so funny you mentioned The Secret because, you know, everybody in that movie is good friends of mine. And so, you know, what they said in The Secret was really well packaged, which is if you just think about money, then money pours in from the ceiling. I'm like, great, I don't know what planet that works on, but it's not the planet Earth. You know, 'cause on the planet Earth, we have to do this annoying thing called work, right?
That's right, action.
But that doesn't sell, right? What sells is, hey, just think about money and it pours. It's like, oh, no wonder they sold 30 million DVDs. And I'm not speaking out of school, because like I said, everybody in that movie knows the whole thing.
Exactly.
I bought a case, so I get it.
Right, right. So I literally have people at my live events or when I'm doing keynote speeches, you know, or at my own live events called— we have an event called Freedom Lifestyle Experience, and, you know, it's a 2-day transformational event. But what people come up to me, they say, hey Noah, I watched The Secret 37 times and I'm still not a millionaire. I'm like, hmm, I wonder why. You know, it's— I'm not kidding. And it's funny but sad. It's like, okay, we got to do this thing called inner game and outer game work. Inner game is everything that happens between your ears that you can't see directly, but it affects everything that you do. And then we also have to have the outer game strategies, right? The systems, you know, all the marketing and sales.
The putting it into action.
Exactly, right. So it's kind of like a house, right? A house has 2 components, right? It has the outer component, which is what you see on the outside. It's like, you know, oh, there's a house. But without the inner game, it's like electricity. It's like having, you know, a building with no electricity. Then it's like, it's a little bit cold in there in the wintertime, a little too hot in the summer. So that's, it's like our lives or your business or, you know, your career. Even your relationships or health. I mean, anything has that inner game and outer game component. And that's what really, that's what Power Habits is really about.
So for the women and men that are listening that are like, you know what, there's so many more people that are wanting to start their own business. Right. Absolutely. So first of all, have your friends call me, have your friends email me. You've got all my contact info. Go to my website.
Read the book first.
Read the book. Go to noahstjohn.com and just contact me. That's number one. Number 2 is you're absolutely right. So many people have— what's so ironic is that they have the fear of success on one hand, but the fear of failure on the other. So it's really, they're totally stuck. No.
You know what I'm saying? So, so what I just proved is that time is not relevant. It's all about your systems.
Right.
The Jenny McCarthy Show on SiriusXM Stars.
Noah St. John. I'm excited to talk to him. Listen to this. Did you know that asking a new kind of question can immediately change your life? One morning in 1997, college student Noah St. John was in the shower when he asked himself a question that changed his life. Why are we trying to change our lives saying statements we don't believe when the human mind responds, responds automatically to something even more powerful? I cannot wait to ask him more about this. Noah St. John, are you there?
I'm here, Jenny. How you doing? Good.
Welcome to the show.
Thanks so much. It's great to be here.
So Noah, you've written a best-selling book called The Book of Afformations: Discovering the Miracle of Positive Self-Talk That Everyone's Talking About. So what are afformations?
Well, as you know, you've ever read a self-help book, an affirmation is a statement of something you want to be true, right? Like, I am happy, I am wealthy, I'm successful, right? We've been told to say these statements over and over, and then we're going to get the things we want, right?
Right.
Well, as you mentioned, back in 1997, I was a 30-year-old college student. I've been doing these affirmations for years, just like they told us, except I wasn't successful. I was miserable. I wasn't happy. I was broke. I mean, nothing was working. And I had all these statements plastered all over my room, just like they told me to do. And so I was in the shower one morning, as you mentioned. I— in the book, I call it the shower that changed everything. Because I was thinking about this and I said, you know what, we've been saying these statements, I've been doing everything they told me to do, but I'm not getting what I want. But I was thinking about what are we talking about? We're talking about the human mind. And what is thought? Thought is the process of asking and searching for answers to questions, not statements, but questions. For example, if I ask you, why is the sky blue? Your brain automatically starts to search for the answer, right?
Correct.
Well, why are we going around making statements we don't believe when the human mind responds automatically to questions? And I said, well, let's take a classic statement, right? I'm sure you've done this, Jenny, and I bet many of your listeners have too. And you say, I am rich, right? That's what they taught us to do, right? I like to do this at my live events. I have everybody stand up and I say, all right, everybody, we're going to say, I am rich. And they go, I am rich. And you know what they do? They start laughing. Yeah, I do too.
I go, what are you laughing at?
And they say, well, I don't believe it. I go, yeah, but you just said it. Yeah, but I don't believe it. So the problem, Jenny, is not the statement. It's that we don't believe the statement. And so that's why millions of people have been going around saying these statements and they're still frustrated. So I invented something called Afformations. So an Afformation is an empowering question that when you ask it, it immediately changes the subconscious thought patterns in your brain. So let me show you how it works.
I'm loving this.
Please.
Good, good. So instead of the statement, I am rich, to which your brain says, yeah, right. I mean, that's what most people do, right? They're literally saying— I call this the yeah, right response. Like, I am happy. Yeah, right. I'm rich. Yeah, right. I'm thin. Yeah, right. You know, and so you're— what you're trying to do is pound your brain into submission. Now listen, for some people that works, but for millions of us, it didn't work at all.
No.
So here's how the affirmation works. Instead of saying, I am rich, you ask, why am I so rich? Now, when you ask, why am I so rich, what immediately starts to happen in your brain?
Yeah, you search.
You start to search. Exactly. And so on our campus at my company, successclinic.com, we call that using the law of sowing and reaping. Now, the law of sowing and reaping, of course, is nothing new. It's been taught for centuries. As you sow, so shall you reap. But what are we sowing? We're sowing seeds of thought. But what are most people doing? Sowing lousy thought seeds. Why am I so stupid? Why am I so dumb? Why am I so fat? Why can't I lose weight? Why is there more month left at the end of the money? Right? Oh my God. Yeah, when you ask lousy questions, what do you get?
Lousy answers.
Exactly. And that creates a lousy life. Now, nobody's doing this on purpose, Jenny. I mean, obviously no one would go around doing this consciously, but it doesn't matter because of the law of sowing and reaping. It doesn't matter if it's conscious or unconscious. And so that's how I invented and named this process called Afformations— A-F-F-O-R-M-A-T-I-O-N-S. And that is why— and just to finish the story, We have now— I've been doing this for 20 years now. I started online back in 1997 in my college dorm room, and I've been teaching this now. We're in over 120 countries, and we've had people make more money, double or triple their income, lose weight, quit addictions, quit smoking, even save people's lives. I've had people write to me or call me and say, Noah, I was going to take my own life. I read your book and I decided not to commit suicide. Wow.
I mean, I absolutely love this, and this is why I always tell people, or try to sometimes, times the power of stillness or the power of like having space, um, because I feel like ideas like this are born. This is brilliant because I have been guilty myself of having vision boards that go nowhere. Um, I have, I have stuff right now on my Post-its on my mirror like, I love you, like guy smiley, you're good enough, and gosh darn it, people like you. Um, you know, I can— I'm guilty of all those Now I want to take it a step further just so we can understand more. So I am rich. Why am I rich? So let's have the mind answer that question, and I'll try to be a general person listening. Okay, I'm rich because I have a house. I have a job. I'm, I'm, I'm able to feed my family. I'm— I seem to, you know, afford something that I really want. Am I answering those correctly?
Well, absolutely, Jenny. And the point is, it's of course different and unique for each person. So that's why in the book of Afformations, I actually walk you through the 4 steps of the Afformations method, and we call that the 4 A's. All right, so the 4 A's involve asking those empowering questions, and then the, the, the first A is to ask yourself what you want. What is it you want to manifest? So do you want to lose weight? Do you want to make more money? Do you want to just be happier? You want to have less stress, whatever it might be. There are 10 main areas of life that we walk you through in the book, from health and wealth to overcoming addiction and overcoming fear and so on. So you ask yourself what you want, then you affirm. What is it? You affirm an empowering question that assumes that what you want is already true. So like you just said, I want to have more money. I want to feel rich. I want to be rich. Why am I so rich? Then the third A is to accept. You accept. We call that giving yourself to the question. So you can read your Afformations. You can write them. You can listen to them. We have tools on our website that you can actually use to listen to them over and over, even while you sleep, and it can change your subconscious thought patterns while you're busy doing other things, while you're not even paying attention. Then the fourth A is to act. You must take action. This isn't magic. It's science.
Uh-huh.
Your brain is already using Afformations.
Afformations.
See, this is what I want to teach people around the world, Jenny, is that we are already, all human beings are already using afformations. The point is 99% of people are using them in a negative or disempowering way. What do you think those questions like, why am I so dumb? Why am I so stupid? How come I'm so fat? Why can't I lose weight? How come I can't make more money? Those are just negative, disempowering afformations. Believe it or not, you're already, everybody listening is already using afformations. Now we're just teaching you how to do it For yourself instead of against yourself.
I love this, and I want to, I want to repeat something you said, which we've mentioned before on the show, but I think not enough, which is the action part. Because that's where I think people got stuck with The Secret. Everyone thought just make a vision board and sit back, and it does take actual action. And it doesn't even take— I've noticed in the stuff that I've manifested in my life doesn't really take that much. It takes like, you know what, I'm gonna post I post a Craigslist thing that says looking for someone interested in, you know, t-shirt making, and then all of a sudden that connection comes through that brings me to another connection, to another connection. I mean, I've noticed that just a little tiny step, but it is action nonetheless.
Mm-hmm. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I'm sure you've heard— I'm sure you've heard the statement 80% of success is just showing up, and that really is true. People just don't show up for themselves And a big reason for that is what I call head trash. So many people have so much what I call head trash that's holding them back from the success they're capable of.
Wow.
Your head trash is basically that guy in your head that says, I can't do it because... and then you just fill in the blank. Well, I can't do it because I'm too old. I can't do it because I don't have enough money. I can't do it because I'm too tall, I'm too short, I'm too this, I'm too that, or I'm not enough of this, not enough of that. And guess what? You know what's amazing, Jenny? We always make ourselves right. We always make ourselves right. If you say, I can't do it because I'm too old, then guess what? You're going to be right. I mean, and then we, you know, I can tell you all the stories about like Colonel Sanders who, you know, started his business at 65 or whatever, you know what I mean? But you're still going to say, oh yeah, well sure, but I can't do it. You don't understand, Noah. I can't do it. Because I'm like, well, guess what? You just made yourself right.
Right.
So if you just stop making yourself right about the wrong things, You're gonna be a lot happier and you're gonna be able to get unstuck so much faster.
I love that term head trash. That makes so much sense to me. There's been people along my way, my journey, including family members, where I've tried to help them, you know, get deals or something, and just, just before it was about to manifest, like literally sign on the dotted line, they would implode it. And I would always be shocked. And there's about a handful of people in my lifetime where I can say Oh my God, I cannot believe they imploded that just before it happened. What happens at that point?
Well, that is your head trash kicking in. See, this is what I've been teaching people since 1997, Jenny. I also invented or discovered something called success anorexia. People are actually suffering from success anorexia. That's another book I wrote called The Secret Code of Success where I show you how to overcome success anorexia. People are actually starving themselves of success. So when you got that deal, this is a perfect example of what I've been teaching for 20 years. When you got that person that deal because you were helping them with their, what I call their outer game, meaning here's the deal, right?
Yes.
Here, sign on the dotted line. But because they hadn't evolved enough on their inner game, which is the stuff that happens between your ears that you can't see directly, but you see the effects of it, see? And so you were basically handing them an outer game deal But because their inner game hadn't caught up to their outer game, they couldn't do it. They imploded. They self-sabotaged. And that is ironically a function of success anorexia. That is the condition that actually caused those symptoms. So the amazing thing is that that's why my clients have added over $100 million over the last few years, you know, in terms of business owners and things like that, because I've showed them how to— how to get rid of their head trash. And so 90% of that is just getting rid of their head trash. And so they're able to manifest these things. They go, my God, this is so It was so much easier. I was working so hard, but it's like you're driving down the road of life with one foot on the brake and one on the gas. When you just get your foot off the brake, everything becomes so much easier.
It's so fascinating to me. I'm absolutely in love with this. The book is called The Book of Afformations. I'm not done yet. I want to ask one more question. Just to get more specific on that head trash, is that self-talk the subtext I'm afraid of success or I'm afraid of failure? What is that head trash conversation usually?
Well, it's of course again dependent on each person, but what I have noticed in a lot of clients that I work with, Jenny, is that it's actually both at the same time. And I know this sounds contradictory and counterintuitive, but you can be afraid of success and afraid of failure at exactly the same time. And so just to give you a quick example, we had one woman who came to me, a client named Susan, She had been buying all these self-help books and going to all the gurus, all the big names. She spent $60,000 on all the stuff out there. She was about to go bankrupt. She was about to lose her home. She was about to lose her marriage. Her husband said, I can't take it anymore. He was going to leave her. She actually heard about me from a friend. She went and got my Afformations book, got all of our programs online. Then she started to realize, wait a minute. I have been sabotaging myself and none of those gurus were telling me what was going on. in the inner game. And then using my methods, she actually was able to manifest her dream job. She's now a TV producer for a national TV show. She's been nominated for an Emmy twice. She's got a 6-figure income, and she's just written her first book. So all of that— Wow! I know, and this is all on our website. You can just go to our website and go to NoahStJohn.com and look at it. But my point is that there's dozens and dozens and dozens of stories like that. I mean, we've got, we've got thousands of stories just on the website. You'll see dozens of people Real people, real stories, Jenny. That's what's so exciting, to see people's lives turn around after they tried all this other stuff and were still stuck.
It's so true. I absolutely love this. I feel like, I mean, I've been on this self-help journey myself since, you know, for 25 years and watched it evolve over the years. I'll look forward to doing it again, Jenny.
I think I manifested you, buddy. Thank you so much. We'll be right back, you guys, with Hooking Up with Coworkers. I'm so interested in this. So if you guys have any horror stories or sex stories about dating someone from work, 888-94-STARS.
I've been waiting for you. I'm pretending, and that's all I can do. The love I'm sending ain't making it through to your heart, your heart, your heart.
Exactly.
We're attached to our own bullshit.
Exactly. You got it. And so that's— I call it head trash just to be polite. But yes, you're absolutely right. But the point is, your head trash is that voice in your head that says, I can't do it because— and whatever happens after the word because is exactly what you have to watch out for. I just proved to everybody listening to this program that time is irrelevant, that you, you have the time. It's not about time. See, this is a great quote that I want everybody to really pay attention to. This is so important. When I, when I first heard this, I'm like, wow, that is so true. And that is, we don't rise to the level of our goals, we fall to the level of our systems. We don't, because we all have big goals, right? We all want, you know, I want a million dollars, I want an island in the Caribbean. I mean, you know, and that's great, you want big goals, that's awesome. But the point is, without the systems, and that's why we call it, you know, in, in the Power Habits book, I teach you about the inner game systems, which is, as I said, everything that happens It happens between your ears. You can't see it directly, but it affects everything you do. For example, at my speeches or at my live events, I often say to my audiences, right now, tell me one area where your beliefs don't affect you. And they go, uh, hmm. And I go, exactly! Your beliefs affect everything, right? Your beliefs affect your health, your relationships, your finances, your business, your social, everything, right? There's no place your beliefs don't affect you, but you can't see them directly. You only see the effects of them. That's why it's so hard for people to change because it's like trying to move the furniture in the room that's totally dark, right? You just can't see what you're doing. So that's why using the Power Habits System, people are able to get that to the surface level, to the conscious level where you can actually turn the light on and go, oh my gosh, I didn't even know I was saying that to myself. And that's when you can make these transformational changes.
I cannot wait to read this book. I'm not kidding. I'm going to go front and back and call you and stalk you. Diagnose me. Okay. Diagnose me in a situation because I'm sure people can relate to this. So there's this kind of like business I wanna do, but this is how I feel. You ever walk in a room in your house or your whole house and it's a disaster and you're like, I gotta clean. And there, you don't even know where to start 'cause it's so messy. So then you wind up not cleaning, not doing anything. 'Cause there's so many—
And you do something else. Exactly. I absolutely talk about that in the book, Jenny. That's exactly right. That you just gave the definition of procrastination. Right? Procrastination literally comes from the Latin word tomorrow, right? The procrast is actually from the Latin word tomorrow. So when you are procrastinating, you are tomorrowizing. Have you ever noticed that tomorrow is where 99% of all of our accomplishments live? I'll do it tomorrow, right? Diets. Meanwhile, I'm watching Netflix and, you know, got it. Okay, cool. I'll just do it tomorrow. But again, see, we have— I call it the gap of good intentions. I really want to write that book. I really want to start my business. I really want to clean my house. I really want to lose weight. But I'll get around to it later. Okay, that's fine. I mean, you know, I'm not here to beat anyone up, but I'm just saying, listen, you— once you have the systems in place— I know I keep saying it, but it's so important. Again, because we don't rise to the level of our goals, we sink to the level of our system. So once you have the inner game systems and the outer game systems in place, then you can start to make those changes.

Hey Jenny, great to be back with you.
Thank you. I almost sounded like that lady, the one that talks about your finances. What is her name again? You know what I'm talking about?
Suze Orman.
Oh, Suze Orman? Yes!
Okay, so Noah, last time you were on the show, we talked about The difference between affirmations and affirmations. Can you refresh our memory for the audience?
If you've ever read a self-help book, you know that an affirmation is a statement of something you like to be true. So like, I am happy, I am wealthy, I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and gosh darn it, people like me, right? And we've heard that a million billion times. For some people, they work great. For millions of people, they didn't work at all. What I did was back in 1997, I invented something called affirmation, which Is empowering questions. I like to do this at my live events. I have everybody stand up and say, okay guys, we're going to say an affirmation. Ready? I am rich. Everybody goes, I am rich. And you know what happens next? Everybody starts laughing. I go, what are you laughing at? You go, well, I don't know. I'm not rich. I go, but you just said you were. Yeah, but I don't believe it. That's the problem. As I share in the book, back in 1997, I was in the shower and I was thinking about all this. And I said, what if we just had a better way? The human mind works using questions, not statements. So what if we just cut out the middleman and go right to the question? So an Now, formation is an empowering question that immediately changes your subconscious thought patterns and literally starts to change your life.
Amen! And can I tell you, I started doing it after our last time, and it made such a huge difference. I just started asking myself, like, what am I good at? What do I love to do? And it brought forth ideas that helped bring abundance.
I love it! I love it! That's great, Jenny! Well, I'm excited! That's what's so exciting about Afformations. And now you're part of the Afformations revolution, and so are all of your listeners. We call it the Afformations revolution. We've got people in over 120 countries. People have made literally millions of dollars, but not just money. People have found love. They have, you know, quit smoking. Kids are getting better grades, self-esteem. We've got people who, you know, kids who were going to drop out of school and now they're getting scholarships. So it's absolutely amazing what Afformations can do, and I just love that you're experiencing it too.
What kind of questions do— should kids ask themselves?
I'll give you a great example that's right from the book. We had a mom actually called me one time and she had been at one of my seminars and she said, Noah, I want you to know that you changed our life. And I said, well, great. How did I do that? She said, well, I have a daughter. Her name is Stephanie and she wasn't getting any sleep. She's a grade A student, but she's a worrywart. She was worrying all the time. She couldn't sleep. We were trying all these different things and we were even considering going to therapy and we just were at our wit's end. She just couldn't sleep. She had to sleep in our bed. It was just really rough on everybody. So I heard you talk about Afformations at your seminar. And she said, I immediately went home and I taught it to Stephanie. She was only 13 at the time. And immediately she started asking better questions like, why am I safe? Why am I enough? Why am I safe in God's love? And she started to Afform and literally change her thought patterns. That very night, Jenny, she slept like a baby. She never lost another night's sleep. And not only that, her mom, Mary, That is her mom name, and she said that she has better self-esteem. Her grades got even better, but she stopped worrying so much, and now she went on to be very, very successful in life.
I love that. Why am I safe? That is brilliant.
It's so simple. That's what's so powerful about it. It's so simple, but yet it's so incredibly powerful because it's using what you're already doing. When I say you, I mean all human beings. We're already asking questions, but the problem is most people are asking lousy questions like, why am I so stupid? Why am I so fat? Why can't I lose weight? Why is my business not growing? Why can't I get a date on Friday night? And when you ask lousy questions, what do you get? You get lousy answers, right?
That's right.
That's right. And that creates a lousy life. Now, nobody's doing this on purpose. Of course, nobody gets up in the morning and says, hey, I think I'll hold myself back from success today by asking lousy questions. Of course not. Nobody's doing this. It's not conscious. It's an unconscious habit. And this This is one of the reasons that, you know, I teach what's called power habits, the power habits of unconsciously successful people, and affirmations is one of the foundational power habits.
I love it. And then how often do people stop living their life fully because of past mistakes?
Oh, the point is what we do is we keep beating ourselves for past mistakes. And of course I'm speaking from personal experience, but I mean almost everybody that I've worked with, my coaching clients, and we all do that. We beat ourselves up. We make We make a mistake and then of course the problem isn't just the mistake. The problem is that we just keep reliving it over and over and over again and telling ourselves how stupid we are. And so it's not just the initial mistake, it's the compounding of it by reliving it. And that's why I came up with this, what I call the ADD method to forgive yourself.
And can you explain that more for our listeners so they can get hooked into getting the book?
So the ADD method basically is not the ADD you're used to listening to or hearing about, but it's a new ADD method. So the A stands for admit the mistakes that you made, and more specifically, admit the mistakes that you need to forgive yourself for and how much they cost you in time, energy, and money, and maybe even relationships. A lot of times we make mistakes. I'll give you a perfect example from my own experience. You know, a couple of years ago, my business was going really good and I said, hey, you know what? It's going good. Let's see if we can even ramp it up and make it better. So I started hiring people and I just started hiring people willy-nilly. I didn't do my homework because I'm such a trusting guy. I'm like a very naive person because I just believe people. And so, you know, they said, hey, I did this and I did that. I go, oh, okay. And I didn't do my homework. It was really stupid.
Sounds like me.
They cost me a lot of money. I mean, like hundreds of thousands of dollars. These were terrible hires that I never should have done. And so the mistake that I made, number one, was hiring those people. But the bigger mistake was not doing my homework. So that's the A, is just admit the mistakes and how much they cost you. For me, it was a hell of a lot of money. So that's the A. The D is to determine the faulty thinking that caused the mistake. So a mistake is usually caused by faulty thinking, not always, but oftentimes. So for me, the faulty thinking was just believing people when they said something. That was really stupid. Like, why would you do that? Well, you know, maybe next time you might want to do something different. So that's the faulty thinking, was just trusting people at their word. I hate to say it that way. I mean, it sounds bad to say that, but that's what happened. Yeah. So you've got to admit the mistakes, determine the faulty thinking, and then the second D is to decide what are you going to do differently in the future to ensure you don't repeat those past mistakes. There's an old saying, which I'm sure you've heard, fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. And so the point is, if you keep doing the same mistake, well, it's shame on you. And so I realized that deciding what I'm going to do differently is I'm going to do my homework. I mean, I'm going to research, I'm going to talk to people, I'm going to say, do my due diligence, just what I should have done in the first place. And what's nice is that I haven't made any bad hires since that time several years ago. And now our business has tripled in the last year. So it's nice when you can do things like that. So that's the ADD method. And again, I just, I like to share that, Jenny, because I want your listeners to realize that we all make mistakes. But stop beating yourself up because that's just going to compound it and it's not going to fix anything.
Amen! I'm talking to Noah St. John. The book is called The Book of Afformations: Discovering the Missing Piece to Abundant Health, Wealth, Love, and Happiness. Why do we have such a hard time accepting compliments from people?
That's one of the reasons or one of the manifestations of what I call head trash. In the Book of Afformations, I talk about your head trash. Now your head trash is that guy in your head that says, I'm not enough. If there's a default human belief, that default human belief is, I'm not enough. And so when someone comes up to you or writes to you or whatever and gives you a compliment, what's happening is it is coming in direct confrontation with your head trash, which I also call your negative self-reflection or your negative reflection. Exactly. See, most of us grew up— have you ever been in a funhouse? You know, where you have funhouse mirrors? That's how most of us grew up, with looking into a funhouse mirror as a reflection of who we are. So we got a reflection of like, for example, why can't you be more like your sister? Or why can't you be more like John down the street? Or whatever it is. And so I— the basic thing that comes to us is I'm not enough. And so we grow up with this belief that says I'm not enough. And so when somebody gives you a compliment, hey, you look really nice today. Oh, you mean this whole thing? Oh man, my hair is a mess. And you know, I didn't even shave today.
And you think you're being humble, like you say in the book. You actually think you're being humble.
That's right, exactly. Exactly. And so one of the things I like to teach my clients— I'm really glad you brought this up, Jenny, because this is one thing that we talk about a lot— is how to accept a compliment. I'll share with you my 2-step method to accept a compliment. You ready?
Yeah.
Okay. So the first step is say thank you. First step. Step 1, say thank you. Step 2, shut up. That's the 2-step method. Say thank you and shut up. And you know what? It's so funny because I had to practice this myself years ago when I started teaching this, because I've been doing this since 1997. I mean, I started I started in 1997 in my college dorm room with $800 and a book on how to do HTML. I mean, this is how long I've been in business. And so my point is, I'm like, gee, I better learn how to do this better than I— yes. And so I said— and people give me a compliment. No, you changed my life. Your book changed my life. You just did. You just gave me a compliment. And did you notice that I didn't deflect it? I said, thank you, that's great, that's awesome.
Yes, and it does make a difference. And I'm— and I, and I urge people to even test it out. I decided, because I was one of those people that always self-deprecated It's how I made my career was like self-deprecating. And finally I decided to change that. So when people go, oh, you look pretty, I literally reply with, don't I? And they laugh and I laugh and I'm like, it is so much better than going like, oh no, I don't, you know. But just saying, don't I, makes all of us giggle.
That is— it made me giggle. And what's the other way to think about it for yourself and for everybody listening is think of it like a gift. People are giving you a gift when they give you a compliment. I mean, now what When it's sincere, of course, when it's fake, we can all see that when it's just sort of somebody buttering you up and so forth. We all know what that is. If it's a sincere compliment, hey, you look great today. You know, that's really nice. Or you did a great job on that presentation or blah, blah, blah, whatever it is. And I'm being sincere. You treat it like a gift. Now, if somebody gave you a gift, let's say it's your birthday or a wedding or some kind of event, you gave it and somebody gave you a gift and you go, well, that sucks. And you just throw it away. Wow, that's pretty mean. That wouldn't be very nice to take a gift and do that. You wouldn't do that, would you? Of course. Of course not. And so that's what a compliment is. It's a gift. So treat it as a gift. And I love what you just said too.
Thank you. Noah St. John, the book is called The Book of Affirmations. I want to briefly get into about work because so many people listen to our show driving to work. So many people, I'm sure, not in the best job that they could be in, that they want more. What are those questions? If you hate your job, you say it's time to ask yourself some tough questions. What are some of the ones that people should be asking themselves?
In the book of Afformations, I give you literally over 400 Afformations in all different areas of life. So first of all, I teach you how to do it. I give you the Afformations method, and then I give you Afformations in all different areas like health and well-being, money and abundance, building self-confidence, work and career, love and intimacy, and so on. So in the section on work and career, that's what we talk about. So exactly what is it you want to be doing? Here's the deal: money comes from work. One thing, and that is value. Money comes from the value that you're giving to other people, to the world. Before I started doing this for the last 2 decades, I had to work a bunch of survival jobs just to live, to eat. And I hated every one of them. I hated all of them because I was just surviving. And I said, is this all I'm on this planet for? And the age of 25, I was suicidal. I decided to commit suicide because I was like, this sucks and I can't take this anymore. And why am I even here? I I share that story in the book. The point is that obviously I'm still here, and it was a miracle at the very last moment that I decided not to take my life. And so I dedicated the rest of my life to serving humanity, serving God, serving everybody. It took me 5 years from the time that I decided not to commit suicide to when I discovered what I was here on Earth to do. I started asking questions like, what am I here to do? What do I love doing? And how can I Provide value to people doing what I love. So like for me, I love speaking, I love teaching, I love coaching, I love mentoring, I love writing. As I just said, it took me 5 years to figure out how to take all of that stuff and make money at it. Now of course I teach people how to do that so it doesn't have to take you 5 years. We've helped people go from literally zero to 6 figures in 4 months. So I love it.
And, and again, I want to remind people, like some people might go, well, I don't know what questions to ask. He has them all All in the book and they will inspire you. Like, why is my career growing beyond my wildest dreams? Why do I love what I do and do what I love? The questions are there that help guide you. And that's what happened with me. I started reading those and going, oh, that one really spoke to me. Like, there's a certain— there will be at least one question that rings true for you, sometimes more than any of the other ones.
And also, Jenny, what people love to do is just take the book and open it at random in the morning. And kind of like people do with the Bible, you open and you pick a Bible verse just literally at random. And so people like to do that with the book of Afformations. They just open the book at random and, you know, just put your finger down and that's my Afformation of the day. Why am I enough? Why am I so rich? Why am I doing what I love and love what I do? And so forth. And you just use that and play with it and your brain starts to come up with better answers as you start to ask better questions.
It's also really good for those married couples out there that climb into bed Just to have the TV off and even talk about those questions or ask your mate those questions. Sometimes you run out of stuff to say or talk about. This is a wonderful door into really going to another level with your mate.
No question about it. And we've had many, many couples— I may have shared the story last time I was on the show, but just real quick— we had a guy wrote to me from Germany, Michael, and he said, Noah, your book saved my marriage because we had the papers, the divorce papers were on On the desk ready to be signed. We were about to get a divorce, and for some reason I had your book there on the desk with me, and I just, at the very last second, I decided to share it with my wife. We started a forming, and we decided to tear up the divorce papers, and now they're happily married again. And I mean, wow, you can't get any closer than you're about to sign the divorce papers. And so, right, saving it from the jaws of defeat. I mean, I just love stories like that.
Of course. What What a gift you've given. Noah St. John, thank you so much for enlightening us and reminding us how important this is. The Book of Afformations: Discovering the Missing Piece to Abundant Health, Wealth, Love, and Happiness. You'll only live once, you guys, unless you believe in reincarnation. Get the book. Make this life a good one. Thank you so much, Noah.
You bet, Jenny.
Have a great day, hon.
All right, you too. Look forward to talking to you again.
Me too.
