In this educational video, naturopathic doctor Dr. Patti Yik outlines ten advanced fertility laboratory tests that go beyond the conventional fertility panel. She explains why each test—ranging from a full thyroid panel and cycle‑wide hormone mapping to the DUTCH urine hormone test, inflammatory markers, vitamin D, folate/B12/MTHFR screening, fasting insulin, gut microbiome assessment, CoQ10/zinc/magnesium levels, and sperm DNA fragmentation—can reveal hidden factors that affect conception, implantation, egg and sperm quality, and IVF success. Dr. Yik emphasizes that these tests are not a blanket checklist but are selected based on a couple’s specific history and used to complement existing fertility specialist care. She concludes with an invitation to schedule a free 15‑minute discovery call and encourages viewers to like, comment, and subscribe for more fertility health content.

Today I'm sharing 10 fertility lab tests that I use in my naturopathic practice. Tests that go well beyond the standard fertility panel, and that very often changes everything about how we understand a couple's fertility picture. Whether you're just starting out or you've been at this for a while, this could give you a completely new roadmap. Let's get into it. Quick note first: I'm not saying standard testing is wrong. It serves an important purpose. What I'm sharing today is the next layer. Think of it as a complement to the care you're already receiving. Full thyroid panel. Standard workups check TSH, but a TSH of 3.4 still passes the normal range while being linked to reduced fertility and miscarriage risk. A full pano adds free T3, free T4, and thyroid antibodies, and very often can tell a very completely different story. Hormone mapping across the full cycle. A single day 3 blood draw is one snapshot of a month-long system. Mapping estrogen, LH, and progesterone at multiple cycle points, especially progesterone at 7 days post-ovulation, reveals whether your body is actually supporting implantation in the second half of your cycle. Dutch Complete Hormone Test. This dried urine test shows not just what your hormone levels are, but how your body is metabolizing and clearing them. Estrogen dominance, cortisol dysregulation, and androgen imbalances all show up here in ways standard blood panels simply can't capture. Inflammatory markers. High sensitivity CRP Homocysteine, and ferritin each measure a different dimension of chronic low-grade inflammation, which disrupts ovulation, impairs implantation, and damages egg quality, almost never included in a standard fertility panel. Vitamin D. Low vitamin D is independently linked to reduced fertility in both partners and lower IVF success rates. In Canada, especially, deficiency is near universal in the winter, and the fertility optimal level is well above the standard lab threshold for sufficient. Folate, B12, and MTHFR. MTHFR gene variants, present in around half the population, impair the body's ability to use standard folic acid. This affects egg quality, embryo development, and implantation. If you have MTHFR and you're taking regular folic acid, it may not be doing what you think it's doing. Fasting insulin. Fasting glucose can be entirely normal while fasting insulin is significantly elevated, indicating insulin resistance that disrupts ovulation, and egg quality, even without a PCOS diagnosis. One number without the other misses the picture. Gut health and microbiome. Your gut bacteria directly regulate how your body clears estrogen. When that system is disrupted, estrogen recirculates, driving hormonal imbalance that affects implantation. Gut assessment is never part of a standard fertility workup. It should be. CoQ10, zinc, and magnesium. CoQ10 powers the mitochondria inside eggs, and mitochondrial function is the primary driver of egg quality. Zinc is critical for sperm DNA integrity, and magnesium supports progesterone. These are almost never tested, and they're among the most readily correctable findings in practice. And finally, sperm DNA fragmentation. A normal semen analysis tells you nothing about the integrity of the DNA inside each sperm. High fragmentation is a leading cause of unexplained infertility, failed IVF cycles, and recurrent miscarriage, and it's entirely invisible on a standard semen analysis. Now, do you need all 10 of these? Necessarily. Part of what I do is look at your specific history and circumstances to determine which of these are most relevant for you. It's a personalized investigation, not a checklist. And if you're already working with a fertility specialist or IVF clinic, keep working with them. My role is to work alongside that care, adding a layer of depth that supports everything you're already doing. If you'd like to find out which of these tests make the most sense for you, the link in the description takes you to a free 15-minute discovery call. I love to be a part of your team.
