In this video, Dr. Patti Yik, ND, addresses the common frustration couples feel when fertility appointments end with the reassurance that “everything looks normal.” She explains that normal lab ranges only rule out disease, not guarantee optimal reproductive health. Dr. Yik outlines the functional, naturopathic testing she uses to uncover subtle imbalances that conventional testing often misses. She walks through six key assessment areas: (1) a full thyroid panel (free T3, free T4, antibodies) beyond the standard TSH; (2) cycle‑wide hormone mapping, especially progesterone measured seven days after confirmed ovulation to detect luteal phase defects; (3) gut health focusing on the estrobolome’s role in estrogen clearance and the risk of estrogen dominance; (4) inflammatory markers such as high‑sensitivity CRP and homocysteine that affect ovulation, egg quality, and implantation; (5) essential nutrients and genetic factors (vitamin D, CoQ10, B12, folate, MTHFR status) that support egg and sperm quality; and (6) sperm DNA fragmentation, a hidden cause of unexplained infertility and IVF failure. Dr. Yik emphasizes that naturopathic fertility care is complementary, not a replacement, for conventional OB or IVF teams, providing a “layer” of functional insight between “everything looks normal” and true reproductive optimization. If you've ever left a fertility appointment feeling more confused than when you walked in, This video is for you. Today I want to talk about one of the most frustrating phrases I hear from couples who come to see me: "Everything looks normal." Because normal and optimal are two very different things, and that gap matters enormously when you're trying to conceive. Standard fertility blood work is incredibly valuable, and I want to be clear, your doctor is doing exactly what they're trained to do. These tests are designed to screen for serious conditions—blocked tubes, severely compromised sperm, premature ovarian insufficiency. They do that job well, but they're not always designed to detect the subtle imbalances that can quietly affect your fertility month after month. The reference ranges are built to identify disease, not to identify the gap between not sick and genuinely thriving. And for a lot of the couples I work with in my naturopathic fertility practice, that gap is exactly where the answers have been hiding. In my practice, I use comprehensive functional lab testing that goes several layers deeper. Let me walk you through the areas I look at often get completely overlooked. First, your thyroid. A standard workup usually just checks TSH, But a TSH of 3.4, which passes every standard lab range, is still linked to reduced fertility and increased miscarriage risk. A full thyroid panel checks free T3, free T4, and thyroid antibodies. These are the things that often tell a very different story than that single number. Second, hormone mapping across your full cycle. A single blood draw on day 3 is one snapshot of a month-long system. I map hormones at multiple points, including progesterone at 7 days after confirmed ovulation, which is the only way to know whether your body is actually producing enough progesterone to support implantation. A lot of women have what's called a luteal phase defect. Their progesterone drops too early, and it's been happening silently every single cycle. Third, your gut health and its connection to your hormones. There's a collection of gut bacteria called the estrobolome, and their job is to regulate how your body clears estrogen. When the gut microbiome is disrupted, estrogen that should be leaving your body gets reabsorbed instead, driving what we call estrogen dominance. This can cause heavy, painful periods, significant PMS, and a hormonal environment that makes implantation harder. Fourth, inflammatory markers, things like high sensitivity CRP and homocysteine. Chronic low-grade inflammation affects ovulation, damages egg quality through oxidative stress, and disrupts the immune environment needed for implantation. Fifth, nutrients that matter for egg and sperm quality. Vitamin D, CoQ10, B12, folate, and whether your genetics are actually allowing you to use the folate supplements you're taking. Something called MTHFR affects around half the population and can make standard folic acid essentially useless for you. And finally, this one surprises a lot of people. Sperm DNA fragmentation. A normal semen analysis checks count, motility, and morphology. It tells you nothing about the integrity of the DNA inside each sperm. High DNA fragmentation is a leading cause of unexplained infertility, failed IVF cycles, and recurrent early pregnancy loss. What I want you to know is this: Naturopathic fertility care isn't a replacement for the care you're already receiving. It's a layer of support that works alongside your existing team. If you're working with an OB, a fertility specialist, or an IVF clinic, that's wonderful. My job isn't to compete with that care. My job is to look at the full functional picture, both partners, and address the factors that conventional testing wasn't designed to find. What I'm offering is the layer investigation that sits between everything looks normal and actually understanding what's going on. And in my experience, that layer changes things. For a lot of couples, it changes everything. If any of this resonated with you, if you've been told everything is normal but something still feels off, I want you to trust that instinct. It is almost always worth listening to. The link in the description below will take you to my website where you can book a free 15-minute discovery call. I genuinely love to be a part of your team.
