Biocompatibility, Bacteria & Bone: Redefining Dental Health
25 Jul 2025 · 27 min
In this second part of the Holistic Dentistry Podcast, host Dr. Sanda Moldovan (periodontist and nutritionist) interviews Dr. Blanche Gruby, founder of DNA Connections (formerly Dental DNA) and BioComp Laboratories. The conversation covers a wide range of topics that link oral health to systemic disease. Dr. Gruby explains how her lab detects bacterial DNA—including Borrelia burgdorferi, the Lyme disease pathogen—in root‑canal teeth, demonstrating that teeth can serve as a diagnostic window for systemic infections. They discuss the growing evidence that periodontal disease is a stronger predictor of heart attacks than traditional risk factors such as obesity or smoking. The dialogue moves to dental implants, comparing titanium (high peri‑implantitis rates, higher crevicular fluid) with zirconia/ceramic implants, and raises concerns about nanoparticles and new composite materials leaching into the body. The BioComp Laboratories compatibility test is described in detail: it measures immune‑cell reactivity to specific dental components (fluoride, silane, aluminum, etc.) by observing light transmission through a blood‑cell‑laden sample, helping clinicians choose the least reactive materials for each patient. The hosts also explore futuristic concepts—stem‑cell tooth regeneration, energetic dentistry linking teeth to organ meridians, and the role of personal energy fields in healing. Practical advice is offered on selecting materials, caring for implants, and avoiding bone grafts from external sources. The episode concludes with announcements of Dr. Gruby’s upcoming book, a one‑day “Principles of Biological Dentistry” course on August 22 at the SMOKH (Sacred Medical Order of the Church of Hope) campus, and a call for listeners to be cautious and seek personalized, evidence‑based dental care.

Hi everybody, I'm Dr. Sanda Moldovan, periodontist and nutritionist. Welcome to the Holistic Dentistry Podcast, the show that gives you the tips and tools to detoxify your mouth for a healthier body as we explore together the root cause of disease. Remember, you're not healthy until your mouth is healthy, so take care of it in the most Natural way.
Welcome to part 2 of the episode with Dr. Blanche Gruby. There was so much interesting information, we actually had to add a second episode to finish our discussion.
The rest of the story about the lab was that he was running this. So he decided to set up this lab called Dental DNA because it didn't matter if you sterilized the tooth, if you crushed it, if you added chloroxylamine to it, no matter what you did, if the bacteria were there, their DNA would still be there. So he began testing the DNA of root canal teeth. And so that's where the lab got started and was called Dental DNA. Well, just about the time when Hal had passed away and I took over the lab, we had a major breakthrough. The lab techs came running to me and they said, Dr. Gruby, did you hear the news? I said, "News? What news?" He said, "Well, one of the root canal teeth that you sent us from Pennsylvania, one of those teeth had Lyme disease in it." What do you mean it had Lyme disease? A tooth can't have Lyme disease. "Well, no, no, no, no, not exactly. What the tooth had was Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria that caused Lyme disease inside the root canal tooth." Now, somebody wanna tell me how does Borrelia burgdorferi or E. coli or any of the microorganisms that we find. How did this get inside of a root canal tooth? I mean, I'm sure it's a wonderful journey. So that blew me away because when I said, wait a minute, if we can find and identify Borrelia burgdorferi in a root canal tooth, then that means we have the ability to detect Lyme disease. Oh yeah, sure. These are techs that, you know, yeah, yeah, sure. No big deal. And I'm like, no, you don't get it. It is a big deal because it takes us out of just dentistry. Now we're a laboratory. We're in a legitimate laboratory for all doctors. So we changed the name of the lab to DNA Connections, connecting the health of the mouth to the health of the body. Because the truth is, the absolute truth is, as the health of the mouth goes, so goes the health of the body. And people are just now starting to talk about the microorganisms found in periodontal disease that cause heart attacks. The micro—
Just now, huh, Dr. Moldovan?
Just now. Just now. I mean, we knew that 30, 40 years ago, but nobody was listening. Now they're starting to talk about it. Now they're understanding that gum disease is actually worse, more of an indicator for future heart attack than my favorite, obesity. Because I'm on the chunky side, okay? But no, periodontal disease is a much higher indicator of having a heart attack than obesity, than smoking, than any of the things that we always thought were the killers. Periodontal disease is one of the major, major killers, isn't it? Absolutely.
Oh, yeah, the microbes, you know, it's always these anaerobic microbes that are in the wrong place that just go undiagnosed.
Right. Amazing. And so I know, I know some dentists are not going to like me saying this, but we're finding that there are microorganisms that really like to hang around implants. So we're finding organisms in implants that set people up for all kinds of systemic diseases much easier than around their own teeth. So, you know, I'm not a, you know, people think, oh, Blanche, she just wants to take everybody's teeth out and have everybody should have dentures. That's not really true. I just feel that people should know the truth. If somebody wants to have a tattoo put on their body, that's, go for it. As long as the tattoo artist tells you that the toxins from that tooth are going to be leaching into your body the rest of your life. Once you know that, if you still want to have a tattoo, go for it. And if you're going to have an implant, go for it. Just know that that implant requires a lot more tender loving care than your own teeth.
Yeah, that's for sure. Yeah. I mean, 1 in 5 patients, statistically speaking, a titanium implant data gets peri-implantitis within 5 years. So that's pretty high. That's pretty high. Lots, lots of patients, you know, their teeth are fine. But the implants have peri-implantitis. Right. Because, you know, and they don't know exactly what it is about titanium that attracts microbes. Because when I look at ceramic implants and titanium, titanium clearly has inflammation. I think it has a higher level of the crevicular fluid.
Yes.
Ceramic, I don't see that. You know, I see healthy tissues, but even healthier than the neighboring teeth. Do you think it has to do with this? Like electricity, conductivity of electricity that you are mentioning, like, you know, teeth are semiconductors in a way.
But ceramic implants have metal on them also. They're— none of the ceramic implants are pure titanium zirconia. They have aluminum in them. They have heavy metals on the outside. So there is, there is some, not as much as in titanium for sure. But there are some heavy metals associated with zirconia implants. I think it's really just a matter of time. I think the zirconia implant will last a lot longer than a titanium implant. But eventually, eventually, it has to go down the same path as the titanium implant. Because anything that is embedded into the body and the body recognizes as not self, the immune system is obligated to try to get rid of it. Our immune system, it's an obligatory system. There's no ifs, ands, or buts. You know, it doesn't say, oh yeah, this is okay. No, it says this is, this is Sanda and this is not. And anything that's not Sanda, it's sending more white blood cells to that, whatever it is, and trying to get rid of it. How much and how long it takes is— therein lies the difference. Because like Hal used to say, anything you put into the body that is highly reactive or is foreign will set up an immune response. It's just a matter of time. So if the time for a zirconia implant is 50 years, well then good. Most people are not going to live 50 years after they've had it.
Exactly, right?
Right.
Yeah, we don't have that long-term data. We have 15-year and 20-year data, but we don't have—
But it's starting to leak out a little bit now. The data is starting to leak out because we're looking at something that we didn't look at 10 years ago, and that's nanoparticles. That's true.
So, and actually, you know, it's interesting because there's a lot of nanoparticle dental materials that are coming on the market to replace mercury fillings, right? So how do we even test it? So I do have patients that call and they're concerned. Well, now you have this nanoparticles. Are the nanoparticles leaching out of the composites? You know, some of them come from Germany, actually. But we— I don't know the answer to that. Do you have it?
We don't know. Just— this is a brand new science.
We don't know. Yeah.
Toxicologists today are all studying nanoparticles. I mean, even the anesthetics that we've been giving our patients for how many years? Now we're finding out they have graphene oxide. Wait a minute. So it's just like there is no end to the new news that we get, especially the bad news. There is no end to it.
That's what keeps us on our toes, huh? That's right.
So the moral of the story is always take care of the second set of teeth that God gave you because they're the last ones you're going to get. You know, that's the bottom line is you got to take care of the set you have, you know, because you're not going to get another set until the resurrection.
I mean, we just cannot duplicate a tooth, you know, even like when you look at how complex the periodontal ligament, nerves, arteries, lacrimal channels, So, you know, the complexity of it, even the people like trying to grow teeth, I don't know how far they're going to get, you know, trying to regenerate tooth structure the way Mother Nature did it.
I don't know.
Patients ask me like, oh, you know, when are we going to grow teeth and then implant them in the body?
I'm like, I don't know. Well, you know what? I mean, you brought it up, so let's talk about it. I don't know if you want to include this in your podcast, but the subject, the subject of stem cells has always fascinated me. Because I was a really young person when Time magazine had Dolly, the first sheep who had been cloned.
Do you remember Dolly? I do remember Dolly the sheep. Yeah, of course.
Dolly, if you think about it, Dolly was a complete animal. She had all of her teeth. So don't tell me you don't know how to grow teeth from stem cells. Uh-uh. Nobody can tell me that lie again. No, because Dolly had a full set of teeth. And I also— yes. And I also know that Dolly was probably not the first sheep that they grew. They probably had 1,000 Dollys that had to be sacrificed because they maybe they had two heads and maybe they had four eyes. I don't know. You know, it wasn't until they came up with the perfect Dolly that they put her on Time magazine. And then we quickly forgot all about Dolly. Nobody wants to talk about Dolly. That drives me crazy. It absolutely drives me crazy because that was a long time ago. They absolutely know how to grow a whole human being.
I just wonder why, you know, how we're going to do this. Like, because I've thought about this too. Like, let's say somebody's losing a central incisor. So we want to grow that particular tooth so we can implant it back in. That would be the hard part. I don't know if they're able to— maybe there are somebody out there. I would love to talk to them for sure and interview them on this podcast. So if you're listening, let's have a conversation. But how do you grow a central incisor, you know, in a petri dish or to be able to implant it and look the same and make sure it's number 8, not number 9? You know, like all these little— that's right.
But, you know, if you think about it, you would have to— you would have to have a fusion of conventional medicine and research and science with what we call alternative medicine and dentistry and science. Because in the alternative world, we're always talking about energy fields and how our body is a reflection of our energy field. So until those scientists are willing to say, okay, let's look at the energy around, say, tooth number 9, let's look at the energy frequencies around tooth number 9, figure that one out. And the Germans have already done that. I'm just saying.
Interesting.
Germans have already done that. You take the energy that's around tooth number 9 and apply it to the stem cells. It has to grow as a reflection of the energetic pattern. See, that's really what's wrong with fillings and root canals and crowns and all the things that we put in our head is that they disturb the energetic patterns that go through our mouth. And every meridian, the Chinese meridians that they use for acupuncture, every single meridian goes through a tooth and goes to an organ. They're all connected. So you show somebody, you show me somebody who is either missing all 4 first molars or has root canals in all 4 first molars, I'll talk to you about somebody who has serious large intestine problems because the large intestines goes to the first molar. If a man comes to me and says he's got prostate cancer, the first thing I ask is, really, when did your front teeth get hit? Was it soccer? Was it football? Because energetically, the front teeth all go to the sexual organs. The same for women too. Okay, if you have ovarian cancer, you probably have one of your front teeth is broken out. Okay, so in order to grow a tooth, the reverse has to be true. The energy pattern has to be there. That's what people like Jerry Tennant, who we both know and love. I mean, the guy's brilliant. I'm like, Jerry, come on. We need to get you on a call like this and say, Jerry, let's get your electricity patterns and grow a tooth and then be able to grow the tooth inside somebody's head without a—
Because if you're going to talk about energetic pattern, the field that everybody has around them, that could generate this tooth and we can somehow stimulate that field to grow the tooth inside the mouth. That would be ideal.
Right. And until they're willing to do that, it's just not going to happen. Because, yeah, there's some things that are just true of the universe. We are a reflection of our own spirit. We get sick in our spirit first, then the body gets sick. And the reverse is true. We get well in our spirit and then the body gets well. And so that's true of our teeth also.
Interesting. So true.
What a, what a great topic.
It's, it's, I love it. The Greeks used to practice that way. You know, the Greeks always treated the spirit.
Right.
The ancient Greeks.
Right. You, you treat the spirit first, and, and actually, no healing takes place if you don't look at a person's spiritual side and, and where they're at. Mm-hmm. Absolutely. You know? I mean, I have a, I have a hygienist who does a cleaning in a minimum hour and 20 minutes.
Minimum?
So, hour and 20 minutes. So she really treats the emotional, spiritual person first while she's cleaning their teeth, for sure. She's wonderful.
She's probably going to have an easier time with the second cleaning then because they'll be educated.
Right.
Now, I want to ask you here about BioComp Labs. This is another test that, you know, you own BioComp Labs, and I'm always so impressed with you because you wear so many hats. Um, but I love this test because, you know, we get a lot of patients that have a lot of different sensitivities and, uh, they don't feel well. And I always recommend the BioComm test. Thank you. So a lot of dentists still don't know about it, so I really want to touch upon this a little bit. A lot of patients don't know about it, the ones that are super highly sensitive. So, um, tell us a little bit about that test.
And, um, well, the first time I heard about it, I was shocked. I thought, well, wait a minute, that makes sense. You wouldn't go into a restaurant and— what if it's a French restaurant and you have an allergy to dairy? Would you say to the chef, oh, just bring me whatever you've made this day that's really delicious? You know, you would never say— you would never say, oh, just bring me whatever, whatever you think is good. That would never happen. And yet we go into the dental office and we allow the dentist to choose the dental materials for us without any knowledge whatsoever about what your immune system has already been exposed to and what it's super sensitive to. You know, I said that very carefully because there are some people who actually will test least reactive to something that has fluoride. And the first time I saw that, I went nuts. I went running to Dr. Huggins and I said, hey, we have a patient here who tested okay for this bonding agent. And I know for a fact that that bonding agent has fluoride. And he said, really? You know what? Is that patient's probably never been exposed to fluoride. They probably didn't have fluoride in their water or even use fluoride toothpaste. That patient's never been exposed. So their immune system right now is kind of, doesn't know what to do with the fluoride. Blew me away. So, so what is Biocomp Laboratories? Well, we are testing the immune system. We test to see how reactive is the immune system to a specific dental component. Now, if you've had a lot of exposure to fluoride and you've got a teeny, teeny little bit of fluoride in that test tube, your white blood cells are going to go ballistic and say, oh, whoa, we know what this is. We've been exposed to this before. It's giving us arthritis. It's giving us cancer. This fluoride business is not good and we're going to attack it. And the white blood cells all clump around this teeny little particle of fluoride. And you have something called a highly reactive material. We pass a beam of light through it. And if it's all clumped up, the light can't go through. Reactive. Now, that first scenario that I told you about, you have a patient who's never been exposed to fluoride. They've never used fluoride toothpaste. They don't have fluoride in their water. They've never had a beer or soda from a fluoride company, a company that uses fluoride. And they have a couple of white blood cells that look at the fluoride and say, "Hmm, what do you think, George?" "I don't know. It's not self, so we can't ignore it altogether. Absolutely, you're right. We're an obligatory system. Okay, you know what? Let's just hang around here. We don't need to call anybody else." We're just gonna hang around and we're gonna keep an eye on this. Now that is what we call a least reactive material. Because when you shine a light through that test tube, the light goes right through it. Okay? Okay. That is our, the way we test. It depends on how violently do your immune cells react when they come in contact with this dental material. And it's interesting because, you know, A lot of people think, well, look at me, I open my mouth and it's all white. I don't have any silver fillings. That's true. They have white fillings, but 50% of the white fillings on the market, and there's hundreds of them, 50% of the white fillings on the market are highly toxic to some of our population.
This is what people don't know. I'm glad you're bringing this up because a lot of people think, oh, it's white filling is healthy because it's white.
No, yeah, not true. A lot of them have silane in them. They have aluminum in them. They have fluoride in them. They have all kinds of things that the patients are highly reactive to. So just because you had your mercury fillings taken out by Dr. George down the block who just said, oh yeah, I can take your fillings out, no problem, took them out, put in the composite that was on sale that week, and now for some strange reason the patient is sicker than they were before. And they're wondering, why am I— I had my mercury fillings taken out. Why am I feeling lousy? And then you find out, yes, the composite that's in their mouth is something they're highly reactive to. Yeah. So we highly recommend all dentists. You know, it's not just holistic dentists. All dentists should do the compatibility test.
I agree with you 100% because there is an immune system at the gum line. Starting at the gum line, there's that immune system.
That's right. That's where it starts. That's where the first red blood cell touches the tooth.
Absolutely. I get patients sent to me, you know, and from the cosmetic dentist in Beverly Hills and their gums all red and inflamed after their veneer treatment. And I'm like, well, we should do a Biocom test and see if you're allergic to the cement or bonding or whatever it is out there, you know. And they're just, oh my God, why wasn't I told this before? And I— yes.
And then the next thing they say is, I paid a lot of money for those veneers. Money is always a factor. And because dentistry is so expensive, it doesn't— it makes sense. A simple $325 test. Come on, just do it. Yeah. As a matter of fact, I'm wearing a t-shirt today. It says, "Boo, yes, get the test.
Just do it." I know there's some, you know, we have patients listening to this podcast. Can they order it themselves? Yes.
Yeah. You don't need to have a doctor's prescription. You can go to the website. Biocomplaboratories.com. Same for DNA Connections. Everything is ordered through the wonderful technology. Everything is ordered through the internet. You know, we don't touch anything. It's amazing. Yeah. You know, check— Yeah.
We'll put those links in the show notes there. And you know the amazing part about the Biocomputer is for how many different materials and different companies?
We're, I think we're at 12,000 now.
Oh, wow.
Yeah, I think we're at 12,000, at least 12,000.
Yeah. And this is everything from like sutures to like, uh, although I'm not a fan of bone grafts, but bone graft materials to cements to denture liners to what, you know, whatever it is that you can think of. And then the—
right. And both when it comes to bone grafting material, there's no such thing as bone graft that came from an animal or from another human being that is sterile. There's no such thing. Comes with its own community of microorganisms. And who knows what else you're getting from another person. So I'm not a lover of bone graft. Now, if I say, if anybody's going to do anything, put in your own plasma-rich fibrinogen. It came from your body. It's yours. It's nobody else's. It's yours. If you got to do it. Yeah. So if I don't mind, I'd like to plug one more thing. Go to Amazon. Amazon.com or BookBaby and pick up a copy of Chew on This, But Don't Swallow.
Chew on This, But Don't Swallow. I love it.
That's my book. Yeah. Me and Anita Tabau, the two of us together. We're partners in crime. Everybody's always asking me, when are you going to teach? When are you going to teach? Okay. I'm going to teach. I'm going to teach. That's the teaching part. I really should.
It's a lot of time and effort, you know, to set up teaching and classes. Yes. Takes a lot.
And the thing is, it's gotten very expensive. Hotels now charge you like $180 if you want a coffee pot. I mean, they charge you hundreds of dollars for the room, they charge you hundreds of dollars for coffee or tea, and then you have to guarantee 15 rooms. And if 15 people don't show up, you have to pay for those rooms. So it's very expensive. So I'm looking for a place and I think I found one. It's not, it's not a hotel. It's out in farm country in Florida, but I have a lecture room that I can use for free.
Oh, that's awesome.
So I'm thinking of giving my next lecture in August at the, I'm a member of an organization called SMOKH.
SMOKH. I don't know this organization.
Okay. That's a sacred medical order. Of the Knights of Hope. Oh! Which is part of SMOCH, which is Sacred Medical Order of the Church of Hope. So we're a monastic group of doctors and a lot of wannabe doctors, people who are lay practitioners. You know, they do all kinds of alternative modalities. Anybody who is interested in healing, OK? It's a Christian-based organization, but you don't have to be a Christian to join. We have Jewish members and Muslims and everybody else is in the organization. But they respect Christianity, of course, because our classes are based on that. And in Smoke, we have a— I guess you would call it a campus. And the campus has a small chapel and it has a new community room. And so I'll be giving my lectures there probably because I don't have to pay for the lecture room itself. Which is a huge expense. Yeah, huge expense. And there are hotels like 20 minutes away that they can stay at. Yeah. Yeah, I'm going to be doing that in August. I have the date. Let me see. Okay, now I'm really committing myself here.
See, there you go. I mean, we can definitely put a link for that in our show notes.
August 22nd. Friday, August 22nd. Intro to Biological Dentistry.
Great. I love it. It's like a one day?
Yeah, it's a 1-day course on the campus of SMOKE.
The Principle of Biological Dentistry, I love it.
Yeah, Principles of Biological Dentistry. What's really important, what you should look out for. So it'll be a mixed bag. It's not gonna be just dentists there. There'll be people who really wanna know what should you look for, what to look for when you're looking for a biological dentist. Because, you know, a lot of people are using that title, the holistic biological, and they're anything but.
It's a market trend nowadays, right? I know I hear patients tell, the patients know, 'cause like, oh yeah, I went to this holistic dentist.
They would—
he gave me fluoride. I'm like, right.
Yeah. Or they did a root canal.
I'm like, that's the other thing.
They wanted me to have a root canal. I'm like, okay, I think you should go someplace else. So I'm going to give that intro to biological dentistry so people know exactly what's really important. And, you know, it'll probably be a long course. We'll probably start at like 8:00, 8:30 in the morning and probably go till 7 or 8 o'clock at night.
Dr. Groupie, this is such an interesting conversation. We hit on so many topics. Is like any other words of wisdom here to close up our show?
No, just two words. Be careful.
Be careful out there. So true.
Be careful out there. It's a crazy world.
It's a crazy world. There's a lot of misinformation. And I meet a lot of young dentists who are actually listening to this podcast. And I sure hope we give you good information to take and explore more. We planted a seed. And, you know, we all learn from people that come before us. You know, Dr. Gruby, thank you for keeping this alive and the conversation going, because in the end, I think there's a lot of people that want to do good. They just have the wrong information. Right.
I agree. I agree with you 100%. And I appreciate the fact that you're willing to do this and have these podcasts. It's great. I've never gotten past the technology 101.
You did amazing. This is one of my missions to just get the word out about, you know, what's good for our bodies. Let's practice personalized dentistry, you know, like by testing. And I'm so grateful that you are here and I hope to have you on another episode in the near future.
I would love to. I'd love to. All right. Thank you very much, Dr. Sanda Moldovanova. Really. God bless.
Thank you so much for joining me this week. Please make sure you check out the show notes for any links mentioned in the show. If you like today's show, please invite your friends to listen as well.
