The Risks of Mercury Amalgam Fillings During Pregnancy
11 Jul 2024 · 0 min
Dr. Sandhya Moldovan breaks down a 2024 study of 1.67 million pregnant women: one in three had mercury amalgam fillings, and nearly 30% exceeded EPA safety limits. The FDA advised against amalgams in pregnant women in 2020. Removal by certified dentists and detoxification should happen at least six months before pregnancy.

Hi, everybody. I'm Dr. Sandhya Moldovan, periodontist and nutritionist. Welcome to today's show. I want to bring forth a study on pregnant women that actually shows they have excessive mercury exposure from dental amalgams. A lot of dentists out there, and some of you may be even listening to the show, believe, oh, you know, what's the problem with my mercury fillings? Well, we have more and more research to actually show that the mercury fillings emit a vapor whenever you eat, whenever you brush them in the warm environment. If you have friction between two amalgam fillings or between an amalgam and food, you're going to get vapors released. And where do those vapors go in your body? This particular study that I want to talk about is called Estimated Exposure from Amalgams among American Pregnant Women, and It was published February 2024 in Human and Experimental Toxicology. You might know that in September 2020, the FDA updated its guidelines on dental amalgam fillings. It went from stating that there's absolutely no health risk to actually stating that there is a risk for vulnerable groups. I particularly noted the risk of fetal exposure during pregnancy, advising against mercury fillings for pregnant women. But what about for those women that already have mercury fillings? They're already toxic. So my recommendation is if you're pregnant, or actually, even better, if you're planning on getting pregnant, do something about it. Then I highly encourage you to visit an IOMT certified dentist, Smart certified to get your mercury fillings removed safely and start the detoxification process prior to getting pregnant. Why? Because once you're pregnant, we know mercury crosses over to the baby, and babies are born with high levels of mercury, and that usually comes from the mother. The FDA also advised that children, individuals with neurological diseases like ms, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, and those with impaired kidney function, and anyone with a known sensitivity to mercury or amalgam components should avoid these fillings. So that's pretty much anyone we are all known to have a sensitivity to mercury. I don't know a human on this planet that is not toxic to mercury or an animal for that matter. The findings really of this particular study that looked at the exposure from amalgams among pregnant women, they analyzed the mercury vapor exposure in approximately 1.67 million pregnant women. We call that a large population study. 120 million Americans still have mercury fillings, everyone. That's quite a high number. In this study, published in February 2024, approximately one in three women out of the 1.6 million were found to have one or more amalgam surfaces. In women with amalgam, the number of surfaces correlated with significantly higher daily urinary mercury excretion. Yeah, that's how our body gets. Let's go. Mercury, it actually comes out through kidneys. It's filtered out in the urine. It only makes sense that the more mercury fillings you have, the more concentration of mercury in your urine. Close to 30% of these 1.6 million women received a dose of mercury from these amalgam fillings that exceeded the safety limits set by the US epa, which is the Environmental Protection Agency. Should we be concerned? Absolutely. Basically, pregnant women, one in three, are releasing mercury vapors from their fillings in excess of what is even allowable. Mercury amalgam dental fillings could really be banned by the fda. Believe it or not, in this country, we are still actually placing mercury amalgam fillings in the dental community. But they do pose a serious risk to all individuals, but especially pregnant women and those getting ready to be pregnant. We all know mercury is a neurotoxin. I myself struggled with mercury toxicity, and it took me years to get rid of it. I think there's no coincidence today that the rate of infertility has increased so much. Are we testing for mercury toxicity before ivf? I know a lot of women out there want to have babies and they don't know why their bodies are not allowing it. I highly encourage you, especially if you're planning on getting pregnant, to test your toxicity to see if you have high mercury levels and other heavy metals and start the detoxification process at least six months prior to considering getting pregnant. See you next time for another interesting episode on the Holistic Dentistry Show.
