In this brief advisory, Dr. Vince Leone advises new clinic owners to refrain from making any operational changes during the first month, and ideally the first six months, after acquiring a practice. He recommends interviewing the existing staff to ask them to identify one change that previous doctors have neglected over the past 15 years. The owner should then implement that single, often inexpensive, improvement—such as adding a $60 cupboard for staff storage—to earn staff goodwill for the coming year. Once that goodwill is secured, the owner can proceed to roll out larger system changes.

into that clinic, you know, you're not making any changes. Definitely, you're not making any changes in the first month, and at least the first 6 months. You're going to interview your— you're going to interview your new staff, and you're going to ask them if they could change or pick one thing that that doctor's let go for the last 15 years, what would it be? And that's the only thing that you make a change. You know what, a lot of times it's going to be like, I wish I had a cupboard right here where I could put my stuff. And seriously, a $60 change will be enough to get you the goodwill of your staff for the next year. And then you can start to implement your systems.
