In this spoken monologue, Eckhart Tolle argues that the future is an illusion that does not truly exist. He invites listeners to test this claim in their own lives. Tolle contrasts human self‑identity—comprised of body image, ego, personal narratives, memories, and conditioned thought patterns—with the simple, ego‑free existence of animals, noting that dogs have no self‑story and therefore no dissatisfaction with their bodies. He critiques modern culture and social media for amplifying a fabricated self‑image, turning people into fictional versions of themselves and deepening the burden of the personal story they tell themselves about their lives. This narrative, he says, becomes a heavy load intertwined with the awareness of death. Tolle describes the future as having two faces: on one side it offers hope and the promise of future happiness; on the other, it inevitably leads to aging, loss, and death, making it a two‑edged sword. He observes that as people age, the future’s allure wanes and the past becomes more dominant, yet the present remains elusive. Throughout, he maintains a contemplative, gently cautionary tone, urging listeners to recognize the non‑existence of the future and to experience life directly in the present.

The future actually does not exist. This is a bold statement. The future does not exist. And only— I'm not asking you to believe it. I'm asking you to verify in your own life whether or not the future exists. My body, which I— in probably more cases than not, it makes people unhappy. Because people who think they have perfect bodies, they're not that many. But there are more people who are not happy with their bodies. The popular culture has something to do with it. So they have a problem with their self-image, so their sense of self feels deficient in some way. Of course, you can compensate for that with other things, and that's what people tend to do. Now, if you look at your dog, the difference between you and the dog is the dog does not have a self. The dog does not have an ego. The dog does not have a problem with his or her body. No matter whether the body is beautiful or ugly or overweight or not, the body, the dog doesn't mind. It's just no image in the mind of the body. Just, okay, overweight, it doesn't even know that it's overweight. What's the problem? There's no problem. Because there's no self. So then you have part of the human identity, you have the psychological entity, the personality. So you have the body, then you have the personality with its conditionings, mental, emotional, reactive patterns, you have memories, you have All kinds of things, thought movements, bundles of thought that gradually solidify in your mind and become the story of me, of you. The story of me that you tell yourself, you call it my life. That's— that is what people are concerned with, my My life is difficult. I don't know any life that's not difficult, except when you look on Facebook, people's lives are all great. But all the other lives are really difficult. So that many young people feel there's something wrong with them because the people they follow on Facebook Are all happy. Even in the past, people would project an image, and now we have devices through technology that make it so easy for you to create an image of yourself that has nothing to do with who or what you are. Total fiction. Before, it was only in the minds that were— that already existed for a long time. Now it's externalized in social media and so on, and so you create a fiction. You become a fiction to yourself even without social media. Long before that was invented, that was already the case. People live with a story, a narrative that they derive their identity from. This is quite normal, and for most humans there is nothing else. That's my life. And so that's what people think about, that's what people talk about, that's what makes your life a burden. So many humans carry around an enormous burden without knowing it, and that burden is— Death. What they call my life. Me and my life. It is so problematic and so many things happened that shouldn't have happened. And then there's a future. Then the future has 2 faces. Maybe it will make me happy when I get this or attain this. The future still promises some happiness and fulfillment. Maybe it will for a while. The future promises— you look to the future, Present is unsatisfactory, past is bad, and then you look to the future. It's called hope. I hope my life is going to get better soon, tomorrow, next year. When I achieve or attain or do this or that or the other, or that happens to me, then I will be okay at some future point. That's the— but then the future has another side to it, and that is deep down, you know, even though you may not make it conscious, that the so-called future is actually eventually going to kill you. First it takes, it takes everything away. It might weaken your body. It makes your body old and ugly, and it takes things away from you. And then finally it says, that's it, you're gone. So the future is a two-edged sword. It promises all kinds of things, but in the end, everybody knows It'll kill you. So up to a certain age, it may vary from person to person, future could be regarded as your friend. Time will give you what— time in the form of future will hopefully give you what you need. And then you reach a certain age and you begin to realize future time in the form of future is no longer benevolent. It does things to you. You have to go to the doctor more often, then this begins to hurt, and that the mirror image isn't good anymore. And so that's— future is where people seek completion of themselves. without realizing— this is, we're talking about the human— without realizing that the future that is so important for most people, all-consuming often, unless you get very old, then the past becomes more and more important and all-consuming. But you'd never find the present— where is it? The future Actually does not exist. This is a bold statement. The future does not exist. And only— I'm not asking you to believe it. I'm asking you to verify in your own life whether or not the future exists.
