In this content, Eckhart Tolle reflects on his personal journey from a state of divine discontent to a significant life transformation, including his move to the west coast of North America and eventual appearance on Oprah's show. The talk explores themes of spiritual growth, surrender, and expansion.
So I was a frequency holder for a large part of my life. Never very interested in going out into the world and achieving the great things. I was kind of happy being withdrawn until something came into my life and I felt, there's more that I can do. That was a thought that came. I was doing little work, workshops with people, 10 people at a time, 15 people for a number of years, giving talks in people's living rooms. And then it was fine. In many ways I felt happy being a semi hermit and occasionally going out and doing little things. Happy not being famous. Never thought I would want to be famous. But then a thought, I could do so much more in this world. But it doesn't seem to be happening. And one day I sat under an oak tree. You could call this. There's a question. Later on we'll have some questions. Somebody is asking a question about divine discontent. Whether is that. Do you ever. The question is, do you ever experience what might be called divine discontent? That is a discontent that leads to something very positive. And you could say there was a moment that came at that time when I experienced a mild form of divine discontent, which simply is a sense of there's more than I can do that I could do, but it's not happening. That's a mild form of divine discontent. It's not some unhappiness, oh, I have failed. I'm in my 40s and what have I achieved? That's not divine discontent. That's just a form of normal unhappiness with divine gift. There is not some lot of mind activity around me and my life. There's just a sense of my present life situation has these limitations around me. But I could go beyond that. I could be much vaster. The world needs what I know comes through me. I know that the world needs that. So why isn't the world, perhaps speaking for some of you too, why isn't the world opening up these channels for me? So that was the divine discontent. So I sat under an oak tree in Somerset, where I would sometimes go, magnificent oak tree. And I said to the universe, which ultimately to myself, please use me. I was talking to myself ultimately. So because I am that, please use me. I'm here. So I was a frequency holder. And yet after many years of a frequency holder, I had this sense of, okay, now expansion is what is called for in this world. A moment of divine discontent. Please use me. I didn't hear any answer. And then I said something that some years later I almost said, maybe I said too much. I said, I want acceleration. Okay. And then I went home, and nothing happened for a few months. I didn't know that while nothing was happening for a few months in my little cottage in Somerset, somebody there. Don't take it literally. The countdown has already started. Like the rocket ship, which goes 10, 9, 8, 7. And then one day I woke up and said, I have to move. I have to move to the west coast of North America. And that was the beginning. And so the rocket ship had taken off suddenly, and finally I landed at the desk of Oprah a few years later. I never wanted that much. It's too much. And then the lesson was to surrender to that. It wasn't too much. It was what was needed. If I had been stuck to some previous idea that I had about how my life should unfold, then I would be saying, oh, I'm overwhelmed. It's too much. Well, this is. Surrender now to what is now. Surrender to this enormous energy stream that's coming through. You asked for it. You said acceleration.
