This is a YouTube video titled "Living A Life Of Balance" containing a monologue or talk recorded on February 9, 2016. The speaker, identified as Sam, discusses mindfulness and the practice of being present in everyday tasks such as folding clothes, emphasizing awareness and conscious attention to the present moment.
The present moment gives you access to the deeper dimension within yourself. And that starts with a little thing like coming. Let's come back to folding the clothes. Why is that so feels so wonderful and peaceful? Because the task itself doesn't really require that much attention. You can do it. You don't have to work out mentally. How am I going to fold these pants or trousers? Or how exactly am I going to hang this shirt up? No, you just do it. It's simple and it's easy. So a lot of your attention is left to spare. Now, most people with all that attention to spare, they go into all kinds of mind stuff. So they're not fully conscious of what they're doing. They're just elsewhere. So I could have been here already giving a talk in my head. What am I going to say? Well, I fall and I wonder what's going to happen tonight with that. And then when is our flight back home? Or did I look at the menu? What's for lunch today? What did he say to me yesterday? That wasn't very kind, was it? And I really should have replied. What should I have? I should have said this, this. And so it's a kind of sleepwalking existence. So you're folding, okay? You're not here. So all that attention that was to spare is absorbed by unconscious thinking. And that's normal, very normal. But it's a pity, because all that attention that is spare attention, you could have used to become aware of the fact that you are conscious, in fact. So you become very still and you realize that stillness is your consciousness. And then as you fold whatever it is you're doing, your clothes, you feel this undercurrent of still, alert attention. Sam.
