Eckhart Tolle lived in a communal house where he noticed residents would shift into different moods that completely changed their personalities. You could hear someone's footsteps and know who it was, but not which mood they'd be in. He calls this the unawakened state of consciousness.

I learned a lot about human behavior many, many years ago. I lived in a communal setup with most people, not all, but most in that place. Very often they would get into moods that would transform their personality completely. So there were bedrooms upstairs in this big old house in England big kitchen downstairs. In the morning I would be in the kitchen and I could hear steps coming down from the upper level, and there comes that person. I recognize the person, but I still wouldn't know who is coming down the stairs this morning, what kind of mood has taken possession of this person now. Fluctuations, so that some psychologists even talk about subpersonalities, which happens in the unawakened state.
