The Reason Why You Aren't Exactly Who You Think You Are | Eckhart Tolle

Eckhart Tolle describes a meditation practice where focusing on empty space reveals your true self: not your personal history, but a formless consciousness underlying all existence. This "deep I" exists beyond time and the temporary self you think you are.

When you focus attention on nothing, the nothingness, the no-thingness of space, your mind becomes totally still. Otherwise, you can't focus attention on it. So the same no-thingness that you see out there as outer space arises within you and is recognized as inner space. And that is the space of consciousness. Consciousness is formless and timeless. So by focusing attention on that which doesn't really exist— space— you can become aware of of, or you inevitably become aware of, that in you that is the inner equivalent of space. And that's inner spaciousness, that's stillness and depth. And that is the deep I, not the historical person I. Then in that moment you know that you are, but you don't— and I'm just going to use semantics here— you know that you are because you can sense this deep 'I,' this deep 'I am,' But in that dimension, you don't exist, you don't stand out, you're not a manifested being. That is the dimension of the unmanifested, out of which all manifestation arises. Into which all manifestation is reabsorbed. And so the deep 'I' that you become aware of in yourself is not really you as the person at all. It is not really your deep eye, it's the deep eye of the universe itself. So when you realize that formless dimension of consciousness that is the heart of— one could say the, the the heart of the universe, that which makes it all possible, out of which it all comes, the source reality. And so, it is a— one way is to, through a little meditation, get in touch with that deep 'I' within yourself which transcends everything in your life, which transcends who you are as a person completely, which transcends the world, existence. So, because you have existence and you have being. Being is prior to existence. Then whatever manifests in this world comes into existence for a while and then leaves, comes out of existence again, is reabsorbed into being. Nothing stays in existence forever. Everything that exists is born and dies.
