Welcome To Eckhart Tolle's First Google+ Hangout

Eckhart Tolle answers questions about presence, awareness, and ego in his first Google+ Hangout, with participants from around the world sharing personal experiences and seeking guidance on living in the moment.
I want to welcome you to the first ever Google Hangout with Eckhart Tolle. He will spend the next hour answering questions on awakening and living with greater presence and purpose in modern life. Before we begin, we're going to take a short period of silence, so I'm going to invite you to sit comfortably. You can either close your eyes or keep your eyes open and focus your attention on the breath as it comes in and out of your body, or simply focus your attention on the feeling of presence and aliveness. We'll take about one to two minutes now and then we'll begin. Welcome again to the first ever Google Hangout with Eckhart Tolle. Eckhart Tolle is a spiritual teacher who is the author of numerous books including the Power of Now and A New Earth. He's one of the great spiritual teachers of our time who is currently offering his teachings through Eckhart Tolle tv, an online community dedicated to putting into practice the teachings and exploring what it means to live and embody a new earth. We are also joined today by people from around the world who will be asking questions and engaging with Eckhart. And we are very happy for you to join us. And we are particularly happy, Eckhart, that you have taken the time to be here with us today for this unique experiment.
Nice to be here. Welcome everybody.
Before we begin with questions, I'd like to introduce the group of speakers that we have from again all over the world. So we will begin with Angelica. Angelica, would you please introduce yourself?
Hi, my name is Angelica.
I live here in Germany, in Freiburg.
I come originally from from the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean. That's why the name Angelica is a Spanish name. Very nice to be here.
Thank you, Dale.
Hi everybody. Welcome to this hangout. Isn't this fantastic that we can all be here together? Many thousands of you, I'm sure, watching. I'm in South Australia, as you can see from the flag behind, right across the other side of the world from Vancouver, where Eckhart is at the moment. I first discovered Eckhart's teachings when I was riding a hand cycle because I'm in a wheelchair and I can't move my legs. I was riding a hand cycle all the way across Australia from Melbourne to Darwin. And Eckhart's audio book the Power of Now popped up on my ipod somehow when I synced to my computer. So I started hearing this wonderful man speak and here I am today. That was about four years ago or so. Very happy to be here and it's great to Meet everyone.
Thank you, Dale. Jan, would you introduce yourself, please?
My name is Jan.
I live in Phoenix, Arizona, was born in Columbus, Ohio and moved here when I was 2 years old. So I've lived in Phoenix most of my life. The way I was. The universe brought me Eckhart's work. After going through quite a lengthy time.
Of.
Emotional difficulties, I went to the Health Institute in San Diego just for survival. And while there, I went to their bookstore and picked up a book off the shelf called the Power of Now. And during one of my classes at the Health Institute, they asked, what is the most important book in your life? And I said, well, the Power of Now. And I still say that. However, when I first picked it up and took it back to my room to read it, I had to lay it down and say, I have no idea what this man is talking about. However, what I did is I went and I bought the audios, brought them home with me, and I left them play in the background over and over and over until there was space in me to receive what I was hearing. Then I experienced the changes in my being and discovered that there was another way to live. And I was so happy. So I'm still with that card after six years. He's his work and his contribution to this planet I am so grateful for. And he doesn't know it, but he even assisted me in helping me care for my mother for six years who had Alzheimer's. To that I'm all so grateful. Thank you, Eckhart.
Thank you.
Thank you. Thank you.
Pam.
Hi, my name is Pamela Peterson and I'm one of the lucky people that for some strange reason Eckhart thought we had a good question. I've been a fan of Eckhart since about nine years ago when my mother, who passed away last year, introduced me to his book. She was a very metaphysical and spiritual person. And I've been involved in that's interested me since my 20s. And so it was at a difficult time in my life. And Eckhart, thank you. You helped me get through that very, very well. And I needed you again this year and pulled out my old copy and also found the CDs. And I agree with Jan, the tapes are great, the audiobooks are wonderful. That really brought it home to me in a better way. And it was this January when I was listening to the tapes. I decided to see if he had a website because it's been a long time. And I found Eckhart Tolle tv and it said, ask a question. And I thought, wow, I'VE had this question about to ask Eckhart and so I did submit the question quickly. I live in Florida. I am from Chile originally and I've been in the United States since 1979. I knew Angelica was Spanish when she said Angelica, so that was cute. But I'm now living in Florida and thank you for having us and thank you. I hope some of my family and friends are watching. So hello to everybody.
Wafa.
Hello everyone. Hello, Eckhart. My name is Waha. I come originally from Jordan. However, I moved 12 years ago to the United States. So right now I'm sitting here in Indiana. I began observing the mind and becoming conscious of thoughts several many years ago. A business mentor suggested that to me. In 2008 I became acquainted and I started to know about Eckhart through Oprah's web class, which I became. I'm very, very grateful for that. Took me and took my practice of awareness to a total new level. And I have to say this is what happens when you begin observing and watching your thoughts and feeling your body. Eckhart comes and visits you at home or something as wonderful. So I am very grateful for everything. I'm very grateful for this occasion and I'm very happy that Eckhart continues to be open to accommodate new technologies such as Google and Google Hangout. So thank you everyone for having me and I'm looking forward to our conversation today.
Thank you. Thank you.
Thank you.
And my name is Soren Gordhamer and I host something called the Wisdom 2.0 conference which looks at how do we use live wisely and purposefully in an increasingly digital age. And I think this is a good example, I hope Eckhart, of technology and wisdom coming together and using technology to serve awakening versus using technology to limit consciousness and increase the pain body. So I'm happy to be here as well. I think we'll start out with Dale from Australia since I believe you're the furthest away. Your question for Eckhart, please.
Thanks. Oren. Eckhart, my question is from Presence. I have been helping my young son to recognize his thoughts. Do you think he can truly identify his egoic thoughts at this age? He is four years old.
Okay. Can you give an example of how you do that to help your son become aware of his thoughts? Can you give a practical example of what that looks like in practice?
Certainly at any time he may be playing, he may be grumpy, he may be really happy.
So.
So at various times I ask him what are you thinking at the moment? What's in your mind? And he says, ah, there's not much in my mind at the moment, Daddy. Sometimes he draws me a picture and I say to him, what was in your mind when you drew that picture? And he says nothing. He says when he's grumpy, grizzly, frustrated, bored and he's moaning, I say, what is in your mind now? And he says lots of things are in my mind. And so there seems to be some direct correlation that when he's content and peaceful that there is some smaller amount of noise and he can identify that at the moment. And in fact, Eckhart, I've been able to see a direct correlation, particularly when he's unhappy and really frustrated and he's angry at me, really angry. I will say, just watch. Where is that coming from? Is it coming from here or is it coming from here? And I have a picture of a face with some eyes looking upwards to a. A space above the eyes. And I say what's in here? And he says I'm not doing that, daddy. No, I don't care. I don't like you, you're not my friend. But he goes away or I leave him there at that place and I retreat out of it carefully and I just say that's okay, that's okay. And then 30 seconds to one minute later he comes back and he says, it's all gone now, Daddy. So it's really quite. I see the difference in him and I was just wondering what might be happening there. What do you think?
Well, that's wonderful that you're able to do that and it's working. Obviously he doesn't. Your child does not need to differentiate between egoic or non egoic. The main thing is that awareness is arising by asking him the question, by making him aware of what kind of thoughts are going through his mind. And he's already beginning to do it for himself. So this is a great example for everybody because it happens so quickly these days that children get completely taken over by the mind. So you're doing wonderful work. As you probably know, you don't need to bring in the word ego at all. What really matters is that awareness is arising. And awareness is a space of consciousness that is deeper than thought. Thought arises within the space of awareness. Now most people don't know that they are not in touch with that dimension. It is as if that dimension didn't exist for them. All they know is the thoughts that they are continuously identified with. And what you are doing, I hope soon will become one of the main things that Children learn at an early age at school. It would be, I would say, the most important subject to learn at school before anything else. And of course together with everything else is to learn what awareness is and to experience awareness in oneself. So it's just you're doing wonderful work here. Just one more question to you. The pain body, which is what I call the pain body, is an accumulation of emotion that builds up in humans. And I would say humans already come into this world with a greater or lesser degree of pain body. So that is closely linked to the thought activity in the head. So does your son have pain body episodes? Perhaps a little bit of that you mentioned when he said, I don't want to, I don't like you right now. And of course at that moment, who is it that is speaking? It is the pain bodied, which is the emotional aspect of ego. So I sometimes recommend that parents also find a way for children to observe that deeply negative emotion that can arise in them. Sometimes it could be a temper tantrum or whatever. And when it has subsided, you ask the child, what was that that that came into you? Then what did it feel like? What would it look like? How would you draw an image of that so that an awareness arise is there also? So what is your experience with the pain body with your child?
Yes, Ekhar, when he hurts someone unintentionally. So when he makes a mistake and he might poke someone in the eye, or he might tread on the dog's tail and the dog might yelp, he takes that incredibly personally. He's a very caring little boy. And when he hurts someone like that, it's like he can't handle that. It's like this embarrassment. There is immense pain that comes immediately to the surface and he can't deal with that. He then gets very angry at the whole environment that he's in. And I really feel for him compassionately. And that brings me to immense presence. If I'm off with the pixies somewhere else, it makes me, hey, it's okay. And I just put my hand out and I say, it's okay, it's okay. And he said, no, I don't want anything, anything. I said, it's fine, no one is hurt, no one is angry. Just watch, just watch, it's okay. And I calm it right down. And he goes through that pain. You can see him go through it. You can see his energy change and then he bursts out of it. You can see it within three seconds he comes out of it like he's surrendering, like that pain body has been identified and it disappears. It just fizzles away. So, yes, that's a good question. He does have that happen.
Yes. Wonderful. So it's a great blessing for the child to have a conscious parent. I didn't have that benefit. My parents did the best they could according to their level of consciousness, and I'm grateful to them, but they were not conscious parents. And I think many people, especially my generation, can say that they probably did not have conscious parents. It's a wonderful blessing. Thank you. Thank you.
Thank you, Ekha. Thank you.
Pamela from Florida, Pamela Peterson. Would you like to be next?
Sure.
As I was saying earlier, I had my first encounter with Eckhart nine years ago, and it helped me greatly. I was reading the book the Power of Now, which I think was your first book that explained your experience, that you had a very painful experience that brought you this awakening and enlightenment and an understanding of life. The way I see it, that is just incredible. And so I had forgotten about it a little bit through the years and again picked it up this year when I felt I needed it again and got into it more deeply with the tapes and again went to the website and as I was listening to the tapes and was thinking about you and about how you came to all this knowledge. And real quickly, the book talks about the power of now. In essence, for anybody that hasn't read it, the power of nouns has to do with living in this moment right now, not in the past or in the present or in the future. In the present. So it occurred to me that what does Eckhart, if he's the guru of living in the moment, what goes through Eckhart's mind every second of the day? When the key is the secret of this enlightenment is to just really live in this minute and not think about the future of the past. So what's going through your mind every second of the day? Are you. You're human also, are you able to control the mind chatter better than most of us, or is it a battle for you every day, too?
Well, it's not a battle anymore, I'm glad to say. A lot of the time I walk around and do things and in the background there's just a spacious presence. And some thoughts, of course, arise, sometimes thoughts that are not particularly interesting. The thoughts no longer draw me in. Thoughts that come like clouds. You have a blue sky and then clouds come drifting past. I mostly, I feel that I am the sky rather than the cloud. So people who are not yet disidentified from thought, they are every cloud that goes past it draws in their attention completely, and then they follow it where it wants to take them. And that leads to more clouds, so to speak. So I don't have that anymore, fortunately. Sometimes, of course, you have to use your mind when certain practical matters need your attention. And there's no problem with that. You apply the mind to specific area and see what is it that needs to be done now. But it's amazing how much one can actually do without too much mental interference that you can start. I recommend that, by the way, as a spiritual practice, one of the main spiritual practices, one is developing the ability to perceive things that are around you without unnecessary mental labeling. Everybody can practice that. And it's actually not that difficult. You just look around and feel rather than you as a person immediately interpreting things and having a mental commentary about what it is that you're perceiving. Instead of that, you are simply a conscious presence. And as conscious presence, you perceive the world without needing to interpret it. And yet you are not totally ignorant. In that state. There is actually a deeper intelligence that comes in and that then operates in your life. And one aspect of that deeper intelligence is it appreciates deeply what it is perceiving and listening to and looking at. So as the deeper intelligence comes in, with that comes a deep appreciation of the aliveness of life that is all around you, including other human beings. And so to know these things, there is a knowing there, and this is how I experience it on a daily basis. And how many people also are beginning to experience their daily life. There is a knowing there that is non conceptual. So when you look at another human being, you can know that human being without having any concepts in your mind. There is a deep connectedness with that comes with everything that you're perceiving when you're not continuously compulsively labelling it mentally, which is, I call it the voice in the head that comments on all your life experiences, which of course is the conditioned mind. And very often for many people, the commentary is negative. The conditioned mind dwells more in the negative than the positive. Because when something really positive arises, the mind subsides and you go, oh, wow, isn't that beautiful? Or that's lovely. Or you feel love, or you feel joy and you observe when you feel joy. There isn't much thinking at that moment. So thinking is fine when you need it. So I walk around a lot of the time just being present with what is, and accepting this is part of it, of course, accepting the present moment as it arises. It is always not really problematic. If a challenge comes, it's addressed. So it's a very kind of childlike way of perceiving things with an added dimension to it, an added dimension of depth and knowing. A very lovely way of being. The first time that happened to me, of course, as I described it in the introduction to the Power of Now, is when I. That night when I disidentified from the mind and I woke up in the morning and I looked around, that was the first time when I had a real experience of that. I looked around the room and I suddenly saw everything is so alive and beautiful. But there was very little thinking anymore. And so there was a peace in the background. And that kind of has stayed with me since then, although the intensity of it can vary, but it's always there somehow, and it's lovely. For most people, this is a gradual realization that one can live in that way. May I just ask you, what is your experience of your mind on a daily basis?
I'm definitely not where you are, and I would love to be there someday. I always say that I would love to be Zen. Like I've been saying that for years. Which means that things just come by and go and I just perceive them, but they don't affect me. And that would be wonderful. But I am still stuck a little bit in the mind chatter. But I'm more aware of it today. I'm more at peace because I don't give it as much importance.
Yes, thought loses the ability to draw you in totally. So it's no longer. It no longer has that gravitational pull or seductive power that it usually has. And there's a little bit of spaciousness that arises. And that is really the most important thing. So I'm glad. A little help, by the way, to anchor you in that state of presence. As I point out in the Power of Now and other places. To anchor you in the state of presence, it is helpful to feel the aliveness inside your body as you are going around and perceiving things and even doing things. And even as we sit here right now, everybody can experience it for themselves. As we sit here right now, we can be aware of what's going on there. You can see me or whoever is there on the screen. You can hear the words. You are peripherally aware of the room that you are sitting in. And at the same time, you can actually feel the aliveness that pervades your entire body. The. Your hands are alive inside your legs, your feet. The entire body feels alive. So some of your attention moves from thinking into the sensing of that global field of aliveness inside you, which you cannot see, but you can sense that that is the life, that which animates the body. And that can serve as an anchor. And so from there you can then perceive things without unwanted, unnecessary interference of old conditioned thinking. So it's always a great help to inhabit the body that keeps you present.
I will just say quickly that it really is a moment to moment awareness and knowing what you have to do with homework and eventually for hopefully it becomes more of a natural thing like it is for you. But it's something that it's an everyday every moment we have to be focusing on living quietly in this moment.
That's right, yes. It becomes a practice. Once you've had your first glimpses, then you are able to by choice invite that presence into your life. And by choice you can then take attention when you don't need to think, particularly and especially when you notice thinking is becoming negative or dysfunctional, in other words, creating unhappiness inside you. The moment you notice that, your choice can be to take attention into the present moment by becoming aware of your inner energy field and then becoming aware of sense perceptions around you. And immediately you've stepped out of the old conditioned thinking.
Thank you.
Thank you, Jan. I think that might be a good time for your question. Jan from Arizona. Would you like to ask that now?
Okay.
Yes, I'm Jan in Phoenix. And my question for you today, Eckhart, would be this. I'm separated from my husband and I live alone and I can't stop myself from crying at times. What can I do to stay in the present moment and avoid these fears?
How long have you been. How long have you been separated from your husband? 38 years. Sorry, how many?
38.
Okay. Now, once a feeling, once a feeling is there, then instead of attempting to avoid it, it's better to simply allow it to be there so that you become the spirit for whatever feeling happens to be there. But it's important to observe whether there is a link between those emotions that arise in you and certain thought processes in your head. And it's only you can be the observer of your mind. Perhaps in some cases, people don't even know that many emotions that they experience are actually caused by certain thoughts in their head. Let me ask you, do you know whether certain thoughts tend to bring up those emotions and the weeping that you periodically experience, what kind of thoughts tend to be associated with. With that in your mind? Okay, a little bit.
Dan, did you hear the question?
I think Jan is Frozen at the moment. But let me just. Until she comes back. Let me just talk a little bit about that. Because it's something that applies to many, many people. What tends to happen is that certain thoughts come into your head that tell you a story about yourself. And for example, the thoughts that you are lonely now that you are alone, that you have. I have nobody. Let's just let. Let me be the thoughts for a moment. I have nobody in my life. These people are all happy with the sensing of that global field of aliveness inside you, which you cannot see, but you can sense that that is the life that which animal partners. No, I'm alone. He has left me or I left him. And now I probably won't find anybody anymore. And why do I have to be so alone? You begin to feel self pity and you begin to feel really lonely because you are creating a story in your head about yourself. And that story is what makes you unhappy. And there's nothing wrong really with being alone as long as you don't have a story around it. Because being alone can also be a great opportunity for becoming present in the moment. So that's the difference of being lonely and experiencing solitude. Lonely is a state that nobody would want to experience. That means lonely means I am lonely. Usually means I'm alone. And I don't like it because I have a story in my head around it that tells me that that's a negative thing. So a self, this is of course egoic thinking itself. An image is created in one's mind. That's me. And this me image is reinforced by continuous further thinking. And in many cases that me image in the mind, which is the egoic self image, in many cases it's an unhappy one. It's an unhappy story. And that was my case, my identity. I lived with an unhappy sense of self for many years that made me anxious and depressed. A deeply unhappy self. But I was so identified with those thoughts that made up that unhappy sense of self. I didn't know that there was a deeper dimension in you that far deeper than any thoughts that were going through my head until that night. So is Dan back now? Can you hear me? Yes. Okay. You disappeared for a moment and I wanted to ask you. Are there certain thoughts in your head that tend to occur as these emotions arise in you? The thought, sadness and so on. Do you know whether there are certain thoughts that tend to be associated with those feelings and emotions? Yes.
And they're extremely subtle.
Yes.
Very aware to.
So you recognize they're very subtle. This means you need to be very alert to catch those thoughts and identify them as not the truth, but a story about your life and about who you are and about what has happened to you. So those thoughts tend to you construct a little story about me, the lonely one. Self pity perhaps arises as part of that. And if you are not very alert, then the thoughts take you over. In other words, you believe in every thought that arises. You become the thought. This is called self identification with thinking. And then you become an unhappy me, an unhappy self. And the emotions then come. And so if you catch those thoughts and as you say, they're very subtle as they arise, you say, oh, there goes another one of those thoughts. And then you realize it is not a helpful thought and it's not even the truth. The truth is simply that you are here, there's nobody else around and there's no problem with that. Actually, it's a wonderful opportunity. It's the body and that can serve as an anchor. And so as I said earlier, you might not have heard it. It's a wonderful opportunity for being just totally present in the moment. Aren't you lucky you're not being distracted by interference of old conditioned thinking. So that's always a great help to inhabit the body that keeps you present. I will just say quickly some husband who wants this or that and has his demand.
It really is a moment to moment awareness and knowing what you have to do with homework and eventually home. Hopefully it becomes more of a natural thing.
So life has given you an opportunity to be free of that.
And it is for you. But it's something that every day, every moment, we have to be focusing on living quietly in this moment.
That's right, yes. It becomes a practice once you've had use that opportunity to inhabit more deeply not only the inner body, but the present moment. So that you experience the aliveness of life that happens around you every moment. Instead of your first glimpses. Then you are able to by choice invite that presence into your life. And by choice you can then take attention of identifying with some old thoughts in your head and being when you don't need to think. Particularly and especially when you notice thinking is becoming negative or discomfort functional. In other words, creating unhappiness inside you coming a story in your head. So it's a use the opportunity. The moment you notice that your choice can be to take a tendency of being alone for your presence. Practice. There are millions of people who wish they were alone. And of course when they are alone, they wish they were with somebody else. So half of the people are unhappy in their relation into the present moment. By becoming aware of your inner energy field and then becoming aware of sense perceptions around you. And immediately you've stepped out of the old conditioned thinking.
Thank you.
Thank you. Jan. I think that might be a good time for your question. Jan from Arizona. Would you like to ask that now?
Okay. Yes, I'm Jan in Phoenix. And my question relationship.
And the others are unhappy because they're not in a relationship.
So I think we might have lost her, but we'll see if she comes back. But Eckhart, this is for you today.
Eckhart, would be this. I'm separated from my husband.
A little bit different than trying to reframe a good story around the experience. Would you say that I'm a husband.
And I live alone and I can't stop myself from crying at times. What can I do to stay in the present moment and avoid these feelings?
How long have you been. How long have you been. Yes, that's a good point. There's nothing wrong with improving a story and saying my life is actually quite good compared to other people. Look at those being separated from your heart.
38 years.
Sorry, how many 38 people? They are far worse off than I am. That's another story that kind of makes it feel you feels a little bit better. But I would say that's fine as a transitional. Okay. Now once a feeling, once a feeling is there, then instead of attempting to avoid it, it's better to simply allow it to be there so that you become the space for whatever feeling step if you want to do that. But I'm here pointing to the possibility of actually going beyond any story so that you don't exchange a happy story for a good one. Are you able to just chance to be there? But it's important to observe whether there is a link between those emotions that arise in you and certain thought processes in your head out of any story. And just be the conscious presence head. And it's only you can be the observer of your mind. Perhaps in some cases people in your life, the conscious presence that is your life be there as a conscious don't even know that many emotions that they experience are actually caused by certain presence. Then some thoughts may still arise out of that but they tend to be happy thoughts. But it's not that your happiness is not caused by the happy thoughts in their head. Let me ask you, do you know the happy thoughts are caused as they come out of the state of presence? So whether certain thoughts tend to bring up those emotions and the weeping that you periodically experience. What kind of thoughts tend to be associated with that in your mind?
And so even if the external world is reinforcing a certain Jan. Did you hear the question?
I think Jan is frozen at the moment. But let me just. Until she comes back. Let me just talk a little bit about that because it's something that applies to many, many people.
Story good or bad. You don't necessarily have to have your being identified with that.
That's right. Yes, yes, yes, absolutely.
So we'll see if she's able to come back, but I think we should probably move.
What tends to happen is that certain thoughts come into your head that tell you a story about yourself. And for example, the thoughts that you are lonely now that you are alone, that you have. I have nobody. Let's just let. Let me be the thoughts for a moment. I have nobody in my life. These people are all happy with their partners. No, I'm alone. He has left me or I left.
On Tawafa.
La Babina Entertainment Now I probably won't find anybody anymore. And why do I have to be so alone? And you begin to feel self pity and you begin to be. To feel really lonely because you are creating a story in your.
She can probably pronounce her name better.
Than I can who is about yourself. And that story is what makes you in Indiana.
Welcome Walpole.
Thank you. Welcome back. Welcome again Sren. And thank you. And I forgot to mention thank you.
For your work for bridging and there's nothing wrong really with being alone as long as you don't have a story around it. Because being alone can also be a great opportunity for becoming present in the moment. So that's the difference of being lonely and experiencing solitude. Lonely is a state that nobody would.
Want to experience technology with consciousness and reminding us that we can put it at the experience.
That means lonely means I am lonely. Usually means I'm alone. And I don't like it because I have a story in my head around it that tells me that that's a negative thing.
At the service of consciousness versus only at the service of ego as we might have seen in the past. So thanks, I greatly appreciate your work. I already checked it out and it's fabulous.
This is of course egoic thinking itself. An image is created in one's mind. That's me. And this me image is written and.
My last name is labavni. You said it right the first time.
Reinforced by continuous further thinking. And in many cases that me image in the mind which is the Egoic self image. In many cases, it's an unhappy one. It's an unhappy story. And that was my case, my identity. I lived with an unhappy sense of self for many years. Years that made me anxious and depressed, a deeply unhappy self. But I was so identified with those thoughts that made up that unhappy sense of self. I didn't know that there was a deeper dimension in you that far deeper than any thoughts that were going through my head until that night. So is Dan back now?
Eckhart, as I mentioned, I began deliberately to become aware of my thoughts many, many years ago at the suggestion of a business mentor who said, who would just say, just become aware of your thoughts, watch your thoughts. And that was it. There was nothing more. So for many years.
Can you hear me? Yes. Okay. You disappeared for a moment, and I wanted to ask you, are there certain thoughts in your head that tend to occur as these emotions arise in you? The sadness and so on. Do you know whether there are certain thoughts that tend to be associated with those feelings and emotions? Yes.
And they're extremely subtle. Yes, very aware to.
So you recognize they're very subtle. This means you need to be very alert to catch those thoughts and identify them as not the truth, but a story about your life and about who you are and about what has happened to you. So those thoughts tend to. You construct a little story about me, the lonely one, self pity perhaps arising.
I became aware of my thoughts, the process. I'm pretty sure you are well aware of the process. That was fascinating. Scary at the beginning, confusing at times. But as I began to become aware, many realizations occurred. Realizations. Naturally, I started writing, because I'm a.
Writer, as part of that.
And.
If you are not very alert, then the thoughts take you over. In other words, you believe in every thought that arises. You become the thought. This is called self identification with thinking. And then you become an unhappy me, an unhappy self. And the emotions then come. So if you catch those thoughts, and as you say, they are very subtle as they arise, you say, oh, there goes another one of those thoughts.
Since I was a child, I always write and I document and I have a scientific nature.
And then you realize it is not a helpful thought. And it's not even the truth.
I tend to write everything. Years later, I decided to write a book.
The truth is simply that you are here.
About conscious consciousness, and I like to call it that and not say present.
And there's no problem with that. Actually, it's a wonderful opportunity just to.
Make sure that I'm precise. I Am aware of my awareness.
As I said earlier, you might not have heard it. It's a wonderful opportunity for being just totally present in the moment. Aren't you lucky? You're not being distracted by some husband who wants this or that and has its demands. So life has given you an opportunity to be free of that and use that opportunity to inhabit more deeply not only the inner body, but the present moment so that you experience this, which.
Are moments that don't come yet so often in my life, but they come at least once or twice a day, which is a great achievement as I began to write the book Aliveness of.
Life that happens around you every moment. Instead of identifying with some old thoughts.
In your head and collect my thoughts or the observations through the years, friends, family members, at some point an author and a person, a CEO of a.
Publishing becoming a story in your head. So use the opportunity of being alone for your presence. Practice. There are millions of people who wish they were alone. And of course when they are alone, they wish they were with somebody else. So half of the people are unhappy in their relationship and the others are unhappy because they are not in a relationship.
So I think we might have lost her, but we'll see if she comes back. But Eckhart is. This is a little bit different than trying to reframe a good story around the experience.
Would you say that publishing house suggested that I write my story? They all have.
Yes, that's a good point. There's nothing wrong with improving a story.
The same thought patterns, the same rationalization or logic behind it, which is so that people can relate, so it can reach a wider audience.
My life is actually quite good compared to other people.
Look at those and it gives us credibility. I'm relatively young and people always kind of like, what am I going to learn?
People, they are far worse off than I am. That's another story that kind of makes it feel. You feel a little bit better. But I would say that's fine as a transitional step if you want to do that. But I'm here pointing to the possibility of actually going beyond any story so that you don't exchange a happy story for a good one. Are you able to just step out of any story and just be the conscious presence coming person?
I had great resistance for that initially. I see their logic. I agree with it, I understand it. But every once in a while and I started to write, put memories and start to do the work to integrate our realizations in your life, the conscious.
Presence that is your life. Be there as a Conscious life story.
But every once in a while a card.
I thought then some thoughts may still arise out of that, but they tend to be happy thoughts. But it's not that your happiness is not caused by the happy thoughts. The happy thoughts are caused as they come out of the state of presence.
So even if the external world is reinforcing a certain story, good or bad, you don't necessarily have to have your being identified with that.
That's right. Yes, yes, yes, absolutely.
Ekke would come and say, but you really have to tell the story. Eckhart didn't tell his life story.
So we'll see if she's able to come back. But I think we should probably move.
So my question to you is twofold.
Number one, Tuafa Labina, I really have.
To tell the story so that people can relate. And number two, if I do, how can I tell the story without energizing the.
She can probably pronounce her name better than I can. Who is in Indiana. Welcome, Walpole.
Thank you. Welcome back. Welcome again, sir. And thank you. And I forgot to mention, thank you for your work for bridging technology with consciousness and reminding us that we can put it at the service of consciousness versus only at the service of Yukio, as we might have seen in the past. So thanks. I greatly appreciate your work. I already checked it out and it's fabulous. And my last name is Lababni. You said it right the first time, Eckhart. As I mentioned, I began deliberately to beat ego and triggering the pain body. The story is filled since age 2. The story was filled with trauma, violence, many things. Of course, they were always aware of my thoughts. Many, many years ago, at the suggestion of a business mentor who said, who would just say, just become aware of your thoughts. Watch your thoughts of love, as I call them, and joy and glimpses of joy here and there. That kept me alive. However, the numerous stories. And that was it. There was nothing more. So for many years I became aware of my thoughts, the process. I'm pretty sure you are well aware of the process. That was fascinating. Scary at the beginning, confusing at times, but as I began to become aware, many realizations occurred. Realizations. Naturally, I started writing because I'm a writer. Since I was a child. I always write and I document. And I have a scientific nature, so I tend to write everything. Years later, I decided to write a book about conscious consciousness. And I like to call it that and not say present. Stories of trauma are there. So if you're going to tell the story, you have to Say what happened. So how can I tell the story? If you think it's necessary so people can relate. How can I say it without energizing the ego and most importantly triggering the pain body Some people may have trauma and I just to make sure that I'm precise. I am aware of my awareness which are moments that don't come yet so often in my life, but they come at least once or twice a day, which is a great achievement. As I began to write the book and collect my thoughts or the observations through the years friends, family and I want to contextualize it in a way that it doesn't just provoke the pain body and family members at some point, an author and a person, a CEO of a publishing house suggested that I write my story. They all had the same thought patterns, the same rationalization or logic behind it, which is so that people can relate, so it can reach a wider audience and it gives it credibility. I'm relatively young and people always kind of like what am I going to learn? Good luck.
Yes, thank you. Yes, thank you.
From a young person I had great resistance for that initially. I see their logic. I agree with it, I understand it. But every once in a while and I started to write put memories and start to the work to integrate our realization.
I do believe that it is helpful to connect with the reader. It is helpful to actually tell the life story.
But every once in a while Eckhart a thought would come and say but do you really have to tell the story? Eckhart didn't tell his life story. So my question to you is twofold. Number one, do I really have to tell the story so that people can relate?
And number two, I often of course I get many books and manuscripts.
So if I do, how can I tell the story without energizing the it's.
Sent to me far more than I can read and sometimes even look at.
Ego and triggering the pain body the story is filled since age 2.
But I do often when I do look at manuscripts, often people write the.
Story was filled with trauma, violence, many things. Of course, there were always doses of love, as I call them, and joy and glimpses of joy here and there that kept me alive. However, the numerous stories of trauma are there. So if you're going to tell the story, you have to say what happened.
Hide things like I had dreadful child experiences and so on.
How can I tell the story? If you think it's necessary so people can relate. How can I say it?
Some of the substance is not there. The reader wants to know that Energizing.
The ego and most importantly, triggering the pain body. Some people may have trauma and I want to contextualize it in a way that it doesn't just provoke the pain body and then good luck.
Yes, thank you.
Yes, thank you. I do believe that it is helpful to connect with the reader. It is helpful to actually tell the story. I often, of course, I get many books and manuscripts sent to me, far more than I can read and sometimes even look at. But I do often, when I do look at manuscripts, often people around what is it actually that happened to you? And it's only when you talk about your own suffering, then you can you begin to connect with the reader because the reader has his or her own suffering also. And so you then resonate. The important thing, of course, is there are two different ways in which one can tell a story. One, you can tell a story in an unconscious way where you put blame and you accuse and blame those people who perpetrated those things, who perpetrated the abuse. You can tell it in an unconscious way where you create those. You create an identity for those people out of their unconsciousness, what they did unconsciously. Or you can create. You can tell a story in a conscious way where there's already an awareness underlying the telling of the story, which means you still tell exactly what happened, but you are also present as you write. You are also present as already as the aware consciousness that wasn't there when those things. Things happen to you, but is there now. So you can bring in two dimensions as you write. There's the dimension of the present where you're telling the story, which includes your own presence, your state of consciousness, the awareness that you are now and to you, but is there now. So you can bring in two dimensions as you write. There is the dimension of the present where you are telling the story and which includes your own presence, your state of consciousness, the awareness that you are now. And from that level you can tell the story and then the story becomes infused with awareness and then it does not from that level you can tell the story and then the story becomes. Becomes infused with awareness and then it does not trigger the pain body in the reader. And it would also probably be a more pleasant way trigger the pain body in the reader and of writing. So I would then recommend that you do tell your story, but be careful that you have the two dimensions not just totally from the dimension of who you were then just absolute suffering. Suffering is there. And the reader needs to know that and to some extent experience it with you, because the power of a book is that the reader can identify with the and that identification can be powerful. And if the narrator has also awareness as he or she tells the story, then the reader can identify also with the level of awareness and not just with those negative things that happened, the suffering that happened. And so as you are a writer, so I'm sure you know how to do that. It's so my main advice then to just briefly summarize is as you write, write from awareness and bring in awareness as you write. So you have the two levels existing at the same time. And then I think what you write will be very, very helpful to others. So does that make sense?
It makes sense, but can I just reiterate to make sure that I understand it correctly? The previous idea I had in my mind was to chronologically mention everything as it happened so that people can relate. However, it gets to a point where I became aware of awareness and aware consciously and all that. However, that's where I thought it was weak or could be danger and triggering. However, what your suggestion as I understood it is that as I'm writing all that, it's kind of like I write the life story, but I also add that it's like two tracks, two soundtracks at the same time. I say, hey, when that happened, this is what had happened. Da da da da da. However, I'm right now here and I can see how can so simultaneously bring the present the presence that I am right now, along with the that will protect the reader from only just going through the drama and the ride. And then.
That's right, it's a little bit like when you in certain movies, there is a background commentary. Sometimes it's a voice, sometimes it's a character that appears in the movie at a later stage where one of the protagonists in the movie is there not only as a protagonist, but also as a a background voice that comments on the action from a much later perspective. And so in a similar way, you can write that book that gives it when that happens in a movie, it gives it the is there not only as the protagonist, but also as a background voice that comments on the action from a much later perspective and often. And so in a similar way, you can write that book to certain depth. And the same thing again happens as you use it in your writing. There will be then a depth to it when you have the two levels you now which is the awareness and you then the sahook that gives it when that happens in a movie, it gives different entity coming together.
Yes.
So it's basically to certain depth. And the same thing again happens as you use it in your writing. There will be then a depth to it when you have the two levels, you now, which is the awareness and you then what the ego does.
However, the ego is always the soundtrack that's negatively commenting and narrating. So right now, here, instead of ego.
We learn entity coming together.
Yes. So it's basically what the ego does. However, the ego is always the soundtrack that's negatively commenting and narrating. So right now, here, instead of ego, we learn from ego and we consciously. I consciously narrate the presence that I learned from ego and we consciously. I consciously narrated the presence that I have right now. That's wonderful.
And also, of course, if you had not gone, I may suggest I know it from my own life and from many other people's lives. If you had not gone through those so called negative experiences, the suffering, you would not be at the level of awareness that you are now. So even a gratitude comes in even as concerns one's suffering.
Yes. Yes. Eckhart. I'm immensely grateful that it came. People look at me when I talk to people. I'm relatively young and I talk to people who are always like sometimes double my age. And you know, I had to take this course, but it came to me compact and I'm so happy I'm done with it. It's good. Okay. I continue to grow and learn and become more aware and deepen my awareness. But however, I am very grateful. Hey, I'd rather have it early on when I was much younger and many tools that are powerful and I'm here right now to integrate it with consciousness. I'm truly, truly grateful for everything.
Thank you. One last question. What does the writing behind you say? The writing on yourself there?
Well, I was going to ask you if you could read that. That's actually. It says, it's a prayer. It says as you wake up, you say we awaken and everything belongs to God. And much gratitude to the 1. That is 2 they have right now. That's wonderful.
And also, of course, to the One.
And to him we return. So it's a very weak translation right on the spot. I should have thought of that. But it's a prayer that I put there, my friend. Actually, my sister wrote actually and I put there.
Oh, thank you.
Oh, thank you. Thank you. Thank you, Eckhart. I greatly appreciate your help.
Thank you.
So, Eckhart, we have Angelica Mishendal from Germany who also has a question now. Angelica.
Hi. Hi.
Very nice to be here.
Thank You.
My question is a very simple question and I tell you how I came to it. I was writing an email one day and to the dear ones, I always write with love, I send you my love or I give you my love. And I asked myself, you know, I write this, I give you my love.
What is that?
What happens when I give somebody love? What happens there?
What is that?
What does that mean? How does that feel inside? So this question led me to look a little bit deeper into it and I, I saw, I realized that I actually don't give anything when I give love to somebody or when I say it, even when I feel it, I'm just there. So the question that I have is, what is then the difference between love and presence?
Good. Well, that's a good question. Now love, of course, can mean many things. There is the love as the ego sees it, and there is the true love, which is a transcendent state. Now I have, I believe in one of. I occasionally post things on Facebook. Well, somebody does it for me, but I write it and I had a quote a few months ago, I don't know, can't remember who it is by. It said, in romantic love, you want the other person, and in true love you want what's good for the other person. So the pseudo love is always wanting something, and if the wanting is not met or no longer works, then it can very quickly turn into its opposite. So true love is very different from that grasping, clinging or wanting that we normally associate with love. That's the egoic state. There is a word that is. Let's explore some alternative. Point us to that, to what we call love. There is a word in the English language called benevolence. Benevolence is of course a Latin based word. Bene is good. Volens is willing. Of course, the English language also has a Germanic based word which is goodwill. So there is goodwill towards all beings or all creatures. Now, when you say you don't give anything, there is a kind of. When you look at something in that space or state of goodwill or benevolence, which really you can only do when you are present, when you are not perceiving through the filter of your conditioned thinking and the filter of the emotions and the filter of the egoic self that consists of conditioned thinking. So when you, when you relate to another human being, not through that filter of the ego which says, I want you, I need you, you, you can somehow enhance my sense of self. You can complement me. I can't live without you. And whatever the ego Says there is another way of relating to a human being. And when you relate no longer through the filter of the egoic mind. Then you relate through presence. And when you relate through presence, there is, although you say it's not a giving. I do perceive it, however, almost as an outflow of energy. That is not your energy, but is energy that moves through you. And it flows to whatever it is you're perceiving in that state of presence. And there is a benevolence that comes with that. So there's a deep peace that underlies that perception. And in that deep peace. And in that benevolence with which you perceive other human beings or another life form. Anything, even an inanimate object. Sometimes you can pick it up and appreciate it in its beingness or its beauty. Or the simple fact that it's there. So all these words that I'm using. Appreciation. Appreciation, an outflow. An outflow. An outflow of attention that doesn't want anything. A benevolence or a good will towards that which you are perceiving. With that the separation. That is the sense of separation. That is created by the conceptualizing egoic mind. Is no longer there. And then you can have love towards another human being that you meet for half a minute. Because you're buying something from him or her. And you are looking at him or her in that state of spacious presence. And out of that state of spacious presence flows this energy. And often you find it coming back at you also. Because the other, it can sometimes awaken that same oneness. Consciousness, as we could call it, in the other. Or at least the other no longer feels threatened by ubiquity. Or the simple fact that it's there. So all these words that consciously or unconsciously. They realize that they are not being judged. I'm using appreciation. Appreciation, an outflow. An outflow. An outflow of attention that doesn't want anything in any way whatsoever. They are being completely accepted as they are in the present moment. And in that complete acceptance which is inseparable from presence. In that complete acceptance, in that spacious presence. There is an energy movement. And that is what I would call love. And the world is waiting. One could almost say the world is waiting to be loved in that way by you. I would say that even the flower loves to be recognized in its beauty by you. Because it cannot be benevolence or a good will towards that which you are perceiving with that. The separation. That is the sense of separation that is created by the conceptualizing egoic mind. Is no longer there. And then you can have love towards another human being. Recognize itself, own beauty. It is beautiful. There's ultimately no separation. Every physicist will agree. There's ultimately no separation between you and the flower. We perceive this absolute separation. When you perceive a flower in that state of presence, the flower begins to recognize itself. And so that happens when there is this appreciation of things around you. Another word that is associated with that is gratitude. They really all go together. You then perceive things in a state of gratitude that you meet for half a minute. Because you're buying something from him or her. And you are looking at him or her in that state of skewed, of honoring everything. Every human spacious presence. And out of that state of spacious presence flows being. Not just using things for some end in the next moment. The mind projects itself to the next moment. And it uses every human being, this energy. And often you find it coming back at you also and everything in order to get to the next moment. What I want to achieve through this human being, it starts with a simple thing like buying it. You're buying a newspaper in a shop. Now the only way in which you interact with this other person that you're buying the newspaper from. Is that person just a function of receiving the money and giving to the newspaper? Or is there another? Because the other, it can sometimes weigh dimension to the interaction. Where for a few seconds while you're there, you can that same oneness, consciousness as we could call it. You acknowledge the beingness of that other person. And that is of course you have to be present with him or her. You look at him in the other. Or at least the other no longer feels threatened by you. Because for a moment there's no thinking is just a spacious presence out of that cause. Consciously or unconsciously, they realize that they are not being judged. Spacious presence. Comes goodwill, comes benevolence, comes an appreciation. And comes a deep sensing that ultimately you and this so called other person are not truly absolutely separate. There comes a sensing, a realization that the essence that you share with the other is consciousness. No matter what form the consciousness takes on the surface, it's a little bit like in any way whatsoever. They are being completely accepted as they are in the present moment. And in that complete acceptance. Ripples or waves of the surface of the ocean. Every ripple looks a little bit different. You are a ripple and the other person is a ripple. It looks different. But what is the actual nature the ripple? What is the true nature of rippleness? The true nature of rippleness is the ocean. Each ripple is an Expression, a beautiful temporary expression of the vastness of the ocean of being. And so you no longer take the appearance of the person for who that person is. Because there can be no love there. You look through that and you sense there is an essence there that is inseparable from presence. So presence, then, and love are very. They go together. You cannot have one ultimately without the other. There are other forms of so called love. That the love a mother has for a child, that is fine, that's a natural kind of love that has its place, but is not yet transcendent love. But there can be transcendent love also there at the same time. But many people, because you mentioned in your question. Sending love to your two relatives and so on. With relatives and family members, you can have two levels. You can have the emotional bond, which is called love. And in addition, you can have the transcendent dimension, which is the true love. So you don't have to be confined to the emotional bond there, which is inseparable from presence. In that complete acceptance, in that spacious presence, there is an energy, movement. And that is what I would call love. And the world is waiting, one could almost say the world is waiting to be loved in that way by you. I would say that even the flower loves to be recognized in its beauty by you. Because it cannot recognize its own beauty. It is beautiful. There's ultimately no separation. Every physicist will agree. There's ultimately no separation between you and the flower. We perceive this absolute separation. When you perceive a flower in that state of presence. The flower begins to recognize itself. And so that happens when there is this appreciation of things around you. Another word that is associated with that is gratitude. They really all go together. You then perceive things in a state of gratitude, of honoring everything. Every human being, not just using things for some end in the next moment. That the mind projects itself to the next moment. And it uses every human being and everything in order to get to the next moment. What I want to achieve through this human being. It starts with a simple thing like buying a newspaper. There needs to be something to really deepen it. There needs to be the transcendent dimension also. And that would be the case even with those with whom you have no emotional bond. So for true love to exist, the emotional bond may be there, or it may not be there. In many cases, you won't have an emotional bond. And yet there is this outflow, benevolence and gratitude and appreciation. So that's really how it is, you know, the question.
So there is, when I looked at this When I looked at this question and I removed all the emotions that are associated with love, then it felt for me, presence has a neutrality. It has like a neutrality. It's just there. But there is no, there is no flavor to it. And when I took out of love all this emotional charge, if there's a way to call it that way, then I couldn't see, I couldn't see any difference.
Almost.
That's why I asked you. And when you talk about a flower, the flower is also present. It's just there. Yeah, it's just there. There are no flavors to it. I mean, it's beautiful when one looks at it. But you talked about this outflow. So is this just being there and then out of this?
No, it's the only way in which you interact with this.
Then this out feeling, this the person.
That you're buying the newspaper from, is that person just a function outflow?
Are this current?
Yes. Of receiving the money and giving the newspaper, or is there another just right now I can look at you, you can look at me without necessarily thinking anything. And you can feel a sense of not just connectedness, but something deeper, a oneness where you don't need concepts, in that there's an underlying piece of beingness, of presence. And in that concepts are not dimensioned to the interaction where for a few seconds while you're there, you acknowledge the beingness of that other person. And that is of course, you have to be present with him or her. You just, you look at him for a moment. There's no thinking, it's just a spacious presence. Out of that spacious presence comes goodwill, comes benevolence, comes an appreciation, and comes a deep sensing that ultimately you and this so called other person are not truly, absolutely separate. There comes a sensing, a realization that the essence that you share with the other is consciousness needed. And you don't even need to understand more about it. Because one thing that the mind can be a help or hindrance. The mind never stops asking the next question, what's this really like? So I'm just inviting you right now, instead of asking to elucidate further, why not simply be here in this beautiful moment and appreciate whatever arises in consciousness at this moment and be there as the underlying presence for it and appreciate it in that way deeply. And that is love.
Thank you.
Thank you.
So our hour is up and I want to take a moment first to thank all of the viewers who tuned into this from all over the world. I know there are thousands and thousands of you. Thank you for taking the time. I also want to thank the members of the Eckhart Tolle community who came here today to ask questions. We really appreciate your efforts and to thank you, Eckhart, as well, for having the interest and courage to try out this new form of technology and dialogue. No matter what form the consciousness takes, on the surface, it's a little bit like ripples or waves on the surface of the ocean, every ripple looks a little bit different. Yes.

Yes, yes. Just right now I can look at you, you can look at me without necessarily thinking anything.
