What changes when you stop reacting to people | Eckhart Tolle

Eckhart Tolle explains how stopping reactive, ego-driven responses shifts your inner consciousness and changes how you act. When you stop reacting egoically, you move from suffering toward presence and benevolence. This inner shift matters more than external actions, and it spreads through how you show up in ordinary moments.
Chapters
Many lifetimes to come into the present moment and realize that the present is the power behind it all, and that's all ultimately, ultimately all there is. But there's an awareness in the background. There's an awareness while life unfolds. So you don't lose yourself in the unfolding life, the succession of events and people and experiences. There's always— there's a presence behind it, and that's lucid living. And you are not looking for yourself in any event or experience anymore. You're able to allow this world to be and contribute in a benevolent way Contribute a different energy to this world, which is what the world needs. And then gradually the world reflects this changed consciousness in you, and that is the arising of a new world. It can only truly arise from a change in human consciousness. That's why— that's the only way. It's not many people Many times people have tried to change the world only on the outside. I'm not saying no action should be taken on the outside. You may want to take action on the outside, but don't lose connectedness with that deeper level. Then the action will be intelligent and might help quite a bit. But fundamentally, The change in consciousness is what is needed to manifest a more conscious world. And that's why— and we are now faced with— I would almost suggest, it may seem paradoxical to you, we live in auspicious times as far as spiritual awakening is concerned because we live in difficult times collectively. The pressure of suffering for humanity is the motivating force behind the awakening of humanity. I cannot make predictions whether every human is going to awaken to that. I don't know. It seems unlikely at the moment. But perhaps it is only necessary for a sufficient number of humans to awaken to bring about a shift, and that you are part of that, and your function is to embody this changed consciousness in your daily life. So whatever you do in your daily life, I sometimes say what you do is secondary But how you do what you do is primary. The how refers to the state of consciousness that is the basis for whatever action you take. Is it an egoic reactivity? Is it— does it arise out of anger or fighting your perceived enemies? Or is that the act coming out of a different state of consciousness? That's the important question. What is— that is how you do. So whether you do in the eyes of the world have some big function, maybe have some big function in this city here somewhere, many important people live here, VIPs in the eyes of the world. But it could be that what you do in your daily life or as your work may be relatively small for some people. Not everybody feels called upon to create something big or some big change. Some people just pursue their daily work, but as change— state of consciousness changes, the way in which you perform your daily work Changes, and something flows into it. So if your daily work involves interaction with people, then what flows into it is the way in which you relate to humans. There is an element of benevolence and non-reactivity to their ego, and that is a huge change. So you become that power in in the world, the power for good, you could say. It's a wonderful life purpose. So your life purpose is not necessarily— the specific life purpose varies from person to person, but underneath all that, everybody's purpose is to embody the awakened Consciousness. And that's— and use all the challenges that come in your daily life as fuel for the deepening of presence. And so, because most of you have reached a point where further unhappiness or suffering is no longer needed, For the awakening, because the awakening process has already begun. Suffering has fulfilled its purpose. Ah, wow, that has taken a long time, many lifetimes, many lifetimes to come into the present moment and realize that the present is the Power behind it all, and that's all ultimately, ultimately all there is. So it's such a wonderful adventure. And so every one of you is more than a person. You are a conscious presence. And yes, you have a personal identity, the form identity, for a little while, but you're no longer consumed by it. You don't believe that's all there is to you. You don't need to strengthen it. It's enough, already enough. There's a powerful dimension. behind it that is emerging gradually more and more fully. And that shift— Religious terms— you have the same in Buddhism, you have the same in Christianity. What I've just said is, for example, St. Paul in, I think, the letter to the Romans in the New Testament said, I have been crucified with Christ. That's not— he didn't mean that literally because he wasn't— he didn't even meet Christ, but so it's an analogy. I have been crucified with Christ, which means I have been through the suffering. I have been crucified with Christ so that it is no longer I who lives, but it is Christ who lives in me. So through the suffering, the surface I has become eroded, and the deep I, as the inner Christ, as it is called in esoteric Christianity, the inner Christ is not a— that is the essence of you, has arisen. Some Buddhists call it Buddha nature. That arises. So, a wonderful saying, I've gone through the suffering and that suffering has caused my personal I, the surface I, to gradually become eroded for the deep I to arise. Well, that's all, that's the whole mechanism. behind it. So, and then the point comes, as I often say, gratitude arises for the suffering that you've been through instead of resentment or bitterness. Gratitude arises because it has taken you to this point of awakening. And that's it. Thank you. Thank you.
